1Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.18.1 Hezekiah: he is called Ezekias 2Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.18.2 Abi: also called, Abijah 3And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.
4¶ He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.18.4 images: Heb. statues18.4 Nehushtan: that is, A piece of brass 5He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. 6For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.18.6 from…: Heb. from after him 7And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not. 8He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.18.8 Gaza: Heb. 9¶ And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it. 10And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. 11And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes: 12Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.
13¶ Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.18.13 Sennacherib: Heb. Sanherib 14And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. 15And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house. 16At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.18.16 it: Heb. them
17¶ And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rab-shakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field.18.17 great: Heb. heavy 18And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.18.18 scribe: or, secretary 19And Rab-shakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? 20Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it. 26Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall. 27But Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?18.27 their own piss: Heb. the water of their feet 28Then Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria: 29Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand: 30Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. 31Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:18.31 Make…: or, Seek my favour: Heb. Make with me a blessing18.31 cistern: or, pit 32Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.18.32 persuadeth: or, deceiveth 33Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 34Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand? 35Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand? 36But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not. 37Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rab-shakeh.

1เฮเซคียาห์โอรสกษัตริย์อาหัสแห่งยูดาห์ขึ้นครองราชย์ตรงกับปีที่สามของรัชกาลกษัตริย์โฮเชยาบุตรเอลาห์แห่งอิสราเอล 2ขณะนั้นทรงมีพระชนมายุ 25 พรรษา และทรงครองราชย์อยู่ในกรุงเยรูซาเล็ม 29 ปี ราชมารดาคืออาบียาห์18:2 ภาษาฮีบรูว่าอาบีเป็นอีกรูปหนึ่งของอาบียาห์ธิดาของเศคาริยาห์ 3เฮเซคียาห์ทรงทำสิ่งที่ถูกต้องในสายพระเนตรขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าเหมือนที่ดาวิดบรรพบุรุษได้ทำ 4พระองค์ทรงรื้อทลายสถานบูชาบนที่สูงทั้งหลาย โค่นหินศักดิ์สิทธิ์ และเสาเจ้าแม่อาเชราห์ ทรงทำลายงูทองสัมฤทธิ์ซึ่งโมเสสได้สร้างขึ้น เพราะว่าชนอิสราเอลเผาเครื่องหอมถวายรูปงูนั้นตลอดมา (งูนั้นเรียกว่า18:4 หรือเขาเรียกว่า เนหุชทาน18:4 คำว่าเนหุชทานมีเสียงคล้ายคำภาษาฮีบรูที่มีความหมายว่า ทองสัมฤทธิ์ และ งู และสิ่งที่เป็นมลทิน)
5เฮเซคียาห์ทรงวางพระทัยในพระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอล ไม่มีกษัตริย์องค์ใดในยูดาห์ก่อนหน้าหรือภายหลังพระองค์เสมอเหมือนพระองค์ 6พระองค์ทรงยึดมั่นและติดตามองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าอย่างไม่ลดละ และทรงปฏิบัติตามพระบัญชาซึ่งองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสสั่งโมเสสไว้ 7องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าสถิตกับเฮเซคียาห์ และไม่ว่าทรงทำสิ่งใดก็ประสบความสำเร็จ เฮเซคียาห์ทรงแข็งเมืองต่อกษัตริย์อัสซีเรีย ไม่ยอมปรนนิบัติรับใช้เขา 8ทั้งทรงพิชิตชาวฟีลิสเตียไปไกลถึงเมืองกาซาและดินแดนโดยรอบ ทำลายตั้งแต่หอคอยจนถึงเมืองป้อมปราการ
9ในปีที่สี่แห่งรัชกาลกษัตริย์เฮเซคียาห์ซึ่งตรงกับปีที่เจ็ดของรัชกาลกษัตริย์โฮเชยาบุตรเอลาห์แห่งอิสราเอล กษัตริย์ชัลมาเนเสอร์แห่งอัสซีเรียยกทัพมาบุกอิสราเอลและล้อมเมืองสะมาเรียไว้ 10จนถึงปลายปีที่สาม เมืองสะมาเรียก็แตกซึ่งตรงกับปีที่หกของรัชกาลเฮเซคียาห์ หรือปีที่เก้าของรัชกาลโฮเชยาแห่งอิสราเอล 11กษัตริย์อัสซีเรียกวาดต้อนคนอิสราเอลไปยังอัสซีเรีย ทรงให้ตั้งหลักแหล่งในเมืองฮาลาห์ เมืองโกซานบริเวณริมฝั่งแม่น้ำฮาโบร์และตามเมืองต่างๆ ของมีเดีย 12ที่เป็นเช่นนี้เพราะชนอิสราเอลไม่ยอมเชื่อฟังพระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าของพวกเขา แต่ล่วงละเมิดพันธสัญญาทั้งสิ้นของพระองค์ตามที่โมเสสผู้รับใช้ขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าได้สั่งไว้ พวกเขาไม่ยอมฟังและไม่ปฏิบัติตามคำบัญชาเหล่านั้น

16ครั้งนั้นเฮเซคียาห์ทรงลอกทองคำที่หุ้มประตูและเสาประตูของพระวิหารขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าไปมอบให้กษัตริย์อัสซีเรีย
เซนนาเคอริบคุกคามกรุงเยรูซาเล็ม

17ฝ่ายกษัตริย์อัสซีเรียส่งแม่ทัพใหญ่ เสนาบดี และแม่ทัพจากลาคีชมาพร้อมด้วยทัพใหญ่ มาหากษัตริย์เฮเซคียาห์ที่กรุงเยรูซาเล็ม พวกเขามาถึงเยรูซาเล็มและหยุดอยู่ที่ทางระบายน้ำของสระบนซึ่งเป็นเส้นทางสู่ลานซักล้าง 18คนเหล่านี้เรียกร้องให้กษัตริย์ออกมา แล้วเจ้ากรมวังเอลียาคิมบุตรฮิลคียาห์ ราชเลขาเชบนาและอาลักษณ์หลวงโยอาห์บุตรอาสาฟก็ออกไปพบพวกเขา

“ ‘กษัตราธิราชแห่งอัสซีเรียตรัสว่าเจ้าพึ่งพาสิ่งใดหรือจึงฮึกเหิมถึงเพียงนี้? 20เจ้าพูดว่าเจ้ามียุทธศาสตร์และแสนยานุภาพ แต่นั่นก็เป็นเพียงลมปาก เจ้าพึ่งใครจึงบังอาจกบฏต่อเรา? 21ดูสิ เจ้าพึ่งอียิปต์ซึ่งเป็นเหมือนไม้เท้าต้นอ้อที่หัก ใครพิงเข้าก็ถูกเสี้ยนตำเจ็บมือ! ใครพึ่งฟาโรห์แห่งอียิปต์ก็เป็นแบบนี้แหละ 22และถ้าเจ้ากล่าวกับเราว่า “พวกเราพึ่งพระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าของเรา” ก็พระเจ้าองค์นี้ไม่ใช่หรือที่เฮเซคียาห์ทำลายแท่นบูชากับสถานบูชาบนที่สูงทั้งหลาย และกล่าวกับชาวยูดาห์และเยรูซาเล็มว่า “เจ้าจะต้องนมัสการที่แท่นบูชาในเยรูซาเล็มเท่านั้น?”
23“ ‘มาสิ มาต่อรองกับกษัตริย์อัสซีเรียนายของเรา เราจะให้ม้าสองพันตัวแก่เจ้าหากเจ้าหาคนขี่ม้ามาได้! 24ต่อให้เจ้าพึ่งรถม้าศึกและม้า18:24 หรือพลขับจากอียิปต์ก็ไม่อาจต่อกรกับนายทหารที่เล็กที่สุดคนหนึ่งของนายเราได้ 25ยิ่งกว่านั้นเจ้าคิดว่าเรามาโจมตีและทำลายที่นี่โดยไม่มีพระดำรัสจากองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าหรือ? องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าเองนั่นแหละที่บอกให้เรายกทัพมาโจมตีและทำลายดินแดนนี้’ ”
26แล้วเอลียาคิมบุตรฮิลคียาห์ เชบนาและโยอาห์กล่าวแก่แม่ทัพนั้นว่า “โปรดพูดกับผู้รับใช้ของท่านเป็นภาษาอารเมคเถิด เพราะเราฟังเข้าใจ อย่าใช้ภาษาฮีบรูเลย เดี๋ยวผู้คนบนกำแพงจะได้ยิน”
27แต่แม่ทัพนั้นตอบว่า “นายเราใช้เรามาพูดกับเจ้าและนายของเจ้าเท่านั้นหรือ? ไม่ใช่กับพวกที่นั่งอยู่บนกำแพงด้วยหรือ? พวกนั้นก็เหมือนเจ้า จะต้องกินอุจจาระและดื่มปัสสาวะของตัวเอง”
28แล้วแม่ทัพของอัสซีเรียก็ยืนขึ้นร้องบอกเป็นภาษาฮีบรูว่า “จงฟังความจากกษัตราธิราชแห่งอัสซีเรีย! 29กษัตริย์ตรัสดังนี้ว่า อย่าปล่อยให้เฮเซคียาห์หลอกลวงพวกเจ้า เขาช่วยกู้พวกเจ้าให้พ้นจากมือของเราไม่ได้หรอก 30อย่าปล่อยให้เฮเซคียาห์เกลี้ยกล่อมเจ้าให้วางใจในองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า อย่าเชื่อเมื่อเขาบอกว่า ‘องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าจะทรงช่วยกู้เราแน่นอน เมืองนี้จะไม่ตกอยู่ในกำมือของกษัตริย์อัสซีเรีย’
31“อย่าไปฟังเฮเซคียาห์ กษัตริย์อัสซีเรียตรัสดังนี้ว่า จงสวามิภักดิ์ต่อเราและออกมาหาเรา แล้วพวกเจ้าทุกคนจะได้กินองุ่นและมะเดื่อจากสวนของตนและดื่มน้ำจากบ่อของตน 32จนกว่าเราจะมาพาเจ้าไปดินแดนหนึ่งซึ่งเหมือนดินแดนของเจ้าเอง เป็นดินแดนที่มีเมล็ดข้าว เหล้าองุ่นใหม่ ขนมปัง สวนองุ่น ต้นมะกอกและน้ำผึ้งอุดมสมบูรณ์ จงเลือกที่จะอยู่ดีกว่าตาย!
“อย่าไปฟังเฮเซคียาห์เพราะเขากำลังหลอกเจ้าให้หลงผิด เมื่อเขากล่าวว่า ‘องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าจะทรงช่วยกอบกู้พวกเรา’ 33มีพระของชาติไหนบ้างที่กอบกู้ดินแดนของตนให้พ้นจากมือกษัตริย์อัสซีเรียได้? 34ไหนล่ะบรรดาเทพเจ้าแห่งฮามัทและอารปัด? ไหนล่ะบรรดาเทพเจ้าแห่งเสฟารวาอิม เฮนา และอิฟวาห์? พระเหล่านั้นช่วยสะมาเรียให้พ้นจากมือของเราได้หรือ? 35มีเทพเจ้าองค์ไหนในชนชาติเหล่านี้บ้างที่สามารถช่วยดินแดนของตนให้รอดจากเราได้? ก็แล้วองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าจะสามารถช่วยกอบกู้เยรูซาเล็มจากมือของเราได้หรือ?”
36แต่เหล่าประชากรนิ่งเงียบ ไม่โต้ตอบสักคำเดียว เพราะกษัตริย์ได้ตรัสสั่งว่า “อย่าตอบเขา”
37แล้วเจ้ากรมวังเอลียาคิมบุตรฮิลคียาห์ ราชเลขาเชบนาและอาลักษณ์หลวงโยอาห์บุตรอาสาฟจึงกลับไปเข้าเฝ้าเฮเซคียาห์ด้วยเสื้อผ้าฉีกขาด และกราบทูลตามที่แม่ทัพอัสซีเรียได้กล่าวไว้
