1Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.18.1 Hezekiah: he is called Ezekias 2Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.18.2 Abi: also called, Abijah 3And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.
4¶ He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.18.4 images: Heb. statues18.4 Nehushtan: that is, A piece of brass 5He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. 6For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.18.6 from…: Heb. from after him 7And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not. 8He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.18.8 Gaza: Heb. 9¶ And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it. 10And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. 11And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes: 12Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.
13¶ Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.18.13 Sennacherib: Heb. Sanherib 14And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. 15And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house. 16At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.18.16 it: Heb. them
17¶ And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rab-shakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field.18.17 great: Heb. heavy 18And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.18.18 scribe: or, secretary 19And Rab-shakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? 20Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it. 26Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall. 27But Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?18.27 their own piss: Heb. the water of their feet 28Then Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria: 29Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand: 30Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. 31Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:18.31 Make…: or, Seek my favour: Heb. O Reinado de Ezequias, Rei de Judá
1No terceiro ano do reinado de Oseias, filho de Elá, rei de Israel, Ezequias, filho de Acaz, rei de Judá, começou a reinar. 2Ele tinha vinte e cinco anos de idade quando começou a reinar e reinou vinte e nove anos em Jerusalém. O nome de sua mãe era Abia18.2 Hebraico: Abi, variante de Abia., filha de Zacarias. 3Ele fez o que o Senhor aprova, tal como tinha feito Davi, seu predecessor. 4Removeu os altares idólatras, quebrou as colunas sagradas e derrubou os postes sagrados. Despedaçou a serpente de bronze que Moisés havia feito, pois até aquela época os israelitas lhe queimavam incenso. Era chamada18.4 Ou Ele lhe deu o nome de Neustã.
5Ezequias confiava no Senhor, o Deus de Israel. Nunca houve ninguém como ele entre todos os reis de Judá, nem antes nem depois dele. 6Ele se apegou ao Senhor e não deixou de segui-lo; obedeceu aos mandamentos que o Senhor tinha dado a Moisés. 7E o Senhor estava com ele; era bem-sucedido em tudo o que fazia. Rebelou-se contra o rei da Assíria e deixou de submeter-se a ele. 8Desde as torres das sentinelas até a cidade fortificada, ele derrotou os filisteus, até Gaza e o seu território.
9No quarto ano do reinado do rei Ezequias, o sétimo ano do reinado de Oseias, filho de Elá, rei de Israel, Salmaneser, rei da Assíria, marchou contra Samaria e a cercou. 10Ao fim de três anos, os assírios a tomaram. Assim a cidade foi conquistada no sexto ano do reinado de Ezequias, o nono ano do reinado de Oseias, rei de Israel. 11O rei assírio deportou os israelitas para a Assíria e os estabeleceu em Hala, em Gozã do rio Habor e nas cidades dos medos. 12Isso aconteceu porque os israelitas não obedeceram ao Senhor, o seu Deus, mas violaram a sua aliança: tudo o que Moisés, o servo do Senhor, tinha ordenado. Não o ouviram nem lhe obedeceram.
13No décimo quarto ano do reinado do rei Ezequias, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, atacou todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá e as conquistou. 14Então Ezequias, rei de Judá, enviou esta mensagem ao rei da Assíria, em Laquis: “Cometi um erro. Para de atacar-me, e eu pagarei tudo o que exigires”. O rei da Assíria cobrou de Ezequias, rei de Judá, dez toneladas e meia18.14 Hebraico: 300 talentos. Um talento equivalia a 35 quilos. de prata e um mil e cinquenta quilos de ouro. 15Assim, Ezequias lhes deu toda a prata que se encontrou no templo e na tesouraria do palácio real.
16Nessa ocasião Ezequias, rei de Judá, retirou o ouro com que havia coberto as portas e os batentes do templo do Senhor e o deu ao rei da Assíria.
A Ameaça de Senaqueribe a Jerusalém
17De Laquis o rei da Assíria enviou ao rei Ezequias, em Jerusalém, seu general, seu oficial principal e seu comandante de campo com um grande exército. Eles subiram a Jerusalém e pararam no aqueduto do açude superior, na estrada que leva ao campo do Lavandeiro. 18Eles chamaram pelo rei; e o administrador do palácio, Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o secretário Sebna e o arquivista real Joá, filho de Asafe, foram ao seu encontro.
19O comandante de campo lhes disse: “Digam isto a Ezequias:
“Assim diz o grande rei, o rei da Assíria: ‘Em que você baseia sua confiança? 20Você pensa que meras palavras já são estratégia e poderio militar. Em quem você está confiando para se rebelar contra mim? 21Você está confiando no Egito, aquele caniço quebrado que espeta e perfura a mão do homem que nele se apoia! Assim o faraó, rei do Egito, retribui a quem confia nele. 22Mas, se vocês me disserem: “Estamos confiando no Senhor, o nosso Deus”; não é ele aquele cujos santuários e altares Ezequias removeu, dizendo a Judá e Jerusalém: “Vocês devem adorar diante deste altar em Jerusalém”?’
23“Aceite, pois, agora, o desafio do meu senhor, o rei da Assíria: ‘Eu lhe darei dois mil cavalos, se você tiver cavaleiros para eles!’ 24Como você pode derrotar o mais insignificante guerreiro do meu senhor? Você confia no Egito para lhe dar carros de guerra e cavaleiros? 25Além disso, será que vim atacar e destruir este local sem uma palavra da parte do Senhor? O próprio Senhor me disse que marchasse contra este país e o destruísse”.
26Então Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, Sebna e Joá disseram ao comandante de campo: “Por favor, fala com teus servos em aramaico, porque entendemos essa língua. Não fales em hebraico, pois assim o povo que está sobre os muros o entenderá”.
27O comandante, porém, respondeu: “Será que meu senhor enviou-me para dizer essas coisas somente para o seu senhor e para você, e não para os que estão sentados no muro, que, como vocês, terão que comer as próprias fezes e beber a própria urina?”
28Então o comandante levantou-se e gritou em hebraico: “Ouçam a palavra do grande rei, o rei da Assíria! 29Assim diz o rei: ‘Não deixem que Ezequias os engane. Ele não poderá livrá-los de minha mão. 30Não deixem Ezequias convencê-los a confiar no Senhor, quando diz: “Com certeza o Senhor nos livrará; esta cidade não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assíria” ’.
31“Não deem ouvidos a Ezequias. Assim diz o rei da Assíria: ‘Façam paz comigo e rendam-se. Então cada um de vocês comerá de sua própria videira e de sua própria figueira e beberá água de sua própria cisterna, 32até que eu venha e os leve para uma terra igual à de vocês, terra de cereais, de vinho, terra de pão e de vinhas, terra de oliveiras e de mel. Escolham a vida e não a morte! Não deem ouvidos a Ezequias, pois ele os está iludindo, quando diz: “O Senhor nos livrará” ’.
33“Será que o deus de alguma nação conseguiu livrar sua terra das mãos do rei da Assíria? 34Onde estão os deuses de Hamate e de Arpade? Onde estão os deuses de Sefarvaim, de Hena e de Iva? Acaso livraram Samaria das minhas mãos? 35Qual dentre todos os deuses dessas nações conseguiu livrar sua terra do meu poder? Como então o Senhor poderá livrar Jerusalém das minhas mãos?”
36Mas o povo permaneceu calado e nada disse em resposta, pois o rei tinha ordenado: “Não lhe respondam”.
37Então o administrador do palácio, Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o secretário Sebna e o arquivista real Joá, filho de Asafe, retornaram com as vestes rasgadas a Ezequias e lhe relataram o que o comandante de campo tinha dito.
