4¶ And the seventh year Jehoiada sent and fetched the rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the house of the LORD, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of the LORD, and shewed them the king’s son. 5And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s house; 6And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the guard: so shall ye keep the watch of the house, that it be not broken down.11.6 that…: or, from breaking up 7And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of the LORD about the king.11.7 parts: or, companies: Heb. hands 8And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in. 9And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10And to the captains over hundreds did the priest give king David’s spears and shields, that were in the temple of the LORD. 11And the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, along by the altar and the temple.11.11 corner: Heb. shoulder 12And he brought forth the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, God save the king.11.12 God…: Heb. 13¶ And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into the temple of the LORD. 14And when she looked, behold, the king stood by a pillar, as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets: and Athaliah rent her clothes, and cried, Treason, Treason. 15But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD. 16And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by the which the horses came into the king’s house: and there was she slain.
17¶ And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they should be the LORD’s people; between the king also and the people. 18And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and brake it down; his altars and his images brake they in pieces thoroughly, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. 4În cel de‑al șaptelea an, Iehoiada a trimis după căpeteniile peste sute, după cariți4 Mercenari din Caria (SV Asiei Mici), gărzi personale ale regelui [peste tot în capitol]. și după gărzi4 Lit.: alergători [peste tot în capitol].. După ce i‑a adus la el, în Casa Domnului, regele a încheiat un legământ cu ei, punându‑i să jure în Casa Domnului. Apoi le‑a arătat pe fiul regelui 5și le‑a poruncit, zicând: „Iată care este lucrul pe care trebuie să‑l faceți: o treime din voi – adică cei care intrați în slujbă în ziua de Sabat și care păziți palatul regelui – 6împreună cu o altă treime din voi – adică cei ce sunteți la Poarta Sur – și cu încă o treime din voi, – adică cei ce sunteți la poartă, înapoia gărzilor, și care păziți Casa cu schimbul, – 7precum și cele două cete ale voastre – adică toți cei care ieșiți de la slujbă în ziua de Sabat – veți păzi Casa Domnului, unde este regele. 8Va trebui să stați împrejurul regelui, fiecare om cu arma în mână. Oricine se va apropia de șirurile voastre trebuie omorât. Stați aproape de rege când va ieși și când va intra!8 Sau: Supravegheați orice mișcare a regelui!“
9Căpeteniile peste sute au făcut întocmai cum le‑a poruncit preotul Iehoiada. Prin urmare, și‑au luat fiecare oamenii, atât pe cei care intrau în slujbă în ziua de Sabat, cât și pe cei care ieșeau de la slujbă în ziua de Sabat, și au venit la preotul Iehoiada. 10Apoi preotul le‑a dat căpeteniilor peste sute sulițele și scuturile care aparținuseră regelui David și care erau în Casa Domnului. 11Gărzile, fiecare cu arma în mână, s‑au așezat de jur împrejurul regelui, din partea dreaptă a Casei, până în partea stângă a Casei, aproape de altar și de Casă.
12Atunci Iehoiada l‑a adus pe fiul regelui, i‑a pus coroana pe cap și i‑a înmânat Mărturia12 Copia Legii.. L‑au făcut rege și l‑au uns, bătând din palme și strigând: „Trăiască regele!“
13Când a auzit Atalia vuietul gărzilor și al poporului, a venit spre mulțimea de la Casa Domnului. 14S‑a uitat și iată că regele stătea lângă stâlp, așa cum era obiceiul. Căpeteniile și trâmbițașii erau lângă rege și tot poporul țării se bucura și suna din trâmbițe. Atunci Atalia și‑a sfâșiat hainele și a strigat: „Trădare! Trădare!“ 15Preotul Iehoiada le‑a poruncit căpeteniilor peste sute, care conduceau armata, zicându‑le: „Scoateți‑o afară dintre rânduri și oricine o va urma să fie omorât cu sabia!“ Căci preotul zisese: „Să nu fie omorâtă în Casa Domnului!“ 16Au pus mâna pe ea în momentul în care trecea prin locul pe unde intră caii în curtea palatului regelui și a fost omorâtă acolo.
Domnia lui Ioaș peste Iuda

17Iehoiada a încheiat un legământ între Domnul, pe de o parte, și rege și popor, pe de altă parte, potrivit căruia ei vor fi poporul Domnului. De asemenea, a încheiat un legământ între rege și popor. 18Tot poporul țării s‑a dus la templul lui Baal și l‑a dărâmat. Ei au sfărâmat de tot altarele lui și chipurile lui, iar pe Matan, preotul lui Baal, l‑au ucis în fața altarelor.
Apoi preotul a pus responsabili peste Casa Domnului. 19După aceea, Iehoiada a luat cu el căpeteniile peste sute, cariții, gărzile și tot poporul țării. Aceștia l‑au coborât pe rege de la Casa Domnului și au venit la palatul regelui pe drumul care duce prin poarta gărzilor. Regele s‑a așezat pe tronul regal. 20Și tot poporul țării s‑a bucurat, iar cetatea s‑a liniștit pentru că Atalia fusese omorâtă cu sabia la palatul regelui.
21Ioaș era în vârstă de șapte ani când a devenit rege.
