1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia: 2Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. 3Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 4Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. 5For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. 6And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. 7And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation. 8For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: 9But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: 10Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us; 11Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.
12For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward. 13For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end; 14As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.
15And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit; 16And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea. 17When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay? 18But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay. 19For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea. 20For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. 21Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; 22Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. 23Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth. 24Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.

Anschrift und Gruß
1Paulus, den Gott zum Apostel von Jesus Christus berufen hat, und sein Mitarbeiter Timotheus schreiben diesen Brief an die Gemeinde Gottes in Korinth und an alle in der Provinz Achaja, die zu Gott gehören.
2Ich wünsche euch Gnade und Frieden von Gott, unserem Vater, und von Jesus Christus, unserem Herrn.
Dank für Gottes Hilfe
3Gelobt sei Gott, der Vater unseres Herrn Jesus Christus! Er ist der barmherzige Vater, der Gott, von dem aller Trost kommt! 4In allen Schwierigkeiten ermutigt er uns und steht uns bei, so dass wir auch andere trösten können, die wegen ihres Glaubens angefeindet werden. Wir ermutigen sie, wie Gott uns ermutigt hat. 5Weil wir Christus gehören und ihm dienen, müssen wir viel leiden, aber in ebenso reichem Maße erfahren wir auch seine Hilfe. 6Deshalb kommt es euch zugute, wenn wir verfolgt werden, denn unser Leid dient zu eurer Ermutigung und Rettung. Und wenn wir getröstet werden, dann geschieht auch das zu eurem Besten. Es gibt euch Kraft, die gleichen Leiden wie wir geduldig zu ertragen.
7Darum sind wir zuversichtlich und haben keine Angst um euch. Denn ihr werdet zwar leiden müssen wie wir, aber genauso werdet ihr auch Gottes Trost und Ermutigung erfahren wie wir. 8Liebe Brüder und Schwestern! Ihr sollt wissen, dass wir in der Provinz Asia Schweres erdulden mussten. Wir waren mit unseren Kräften am Ende und hatten schon mit dem Leben abgeschlossen. 9Unser Tod schien unausweichlich. Aber Gott wollte, dass wir uns nicht auf uns selbst verlassen, sondern auf ihn, der die Toten zu neuem Leben erweckt. 10Und tatsächlich hat Gott uns vor dem sicheren Tod gerettet und wird es auch in Zukunft tun. Wir setzen unser Vertrauen auf ihn: Er wird uns immer wieder aus Todesgefahr befreien. 11Dazu tragen auch eure Gebete für uns bei. Und so werden nicht nur wir, sondern viele Gott dafür danken, dass er uns gnädig ist und uns bewahrt hat.
Paulus wehrt sich gegen falsche Anschuldigungen
12Wenn es etwas gibt, worauf wir stolz sein können, dann ist es unser gutes Gewissen: Wir leben so, wie Gott es will; wir haben euch nichts vorgemacht. Nicht eigensüchtige Überlegungen haben unser Handeln bestimmt, sondern allein Gottes Barmherzigkeit. So haben wir uns überall verhalten, und ganz besonders bei euch. 13Auch unsere Briefe wollen nichts anderes sagen, als was ihr lesen und verstehen könnt. Ich hoffe, ihr werdet einmal voll und ganz begreifen, was ich meine. 14Wenigstens zum Teil habt ihr schon verstanden, dass ihr auf uns stolz sein könnt, genauso wie wir auf euch, wenn Jesus, unser Herr, kommen wird.
15In dieser Zuversicht wollte ich zuerst euch besuchen. Gerne wäre ich zweimal zu euch gekommen und hätte euch beide Male Gottes Liebe nahegebracht – 16sowohl auf dem Weg nach Mazedonien als auch auf der Rückreise von dort. Einige von euch hätten mich dann nach Judäa begleiten können. 17Bin ich denn wirklich leichtfertig gewesen, als ich diese Reise plante? Entscheide ich etwa so, wie ich selbst es für richtig halte, ohne nach Gottes Willen zu fragen? Gehöre ich zu den unzuverlässigen Leuten, die »Ja« sagen, wenn sie »Nein« meinen?
18Gott ist mein Zeuge, dass wir niemals etwas anderes sagen, als wir wirklich meinen. 19Auch Jesus Christus, der Sohn Gottes, den Silvanus, Timotheus und ich euch verkündet haben, war nicht gleichzeitig »Ja« und »Nein«. Er selbst ist in seiner Person das Ja Gottes zu uns, 20denn alle Zusagen Gottes erfüllen sich in ihm. Und auf das, was Christus für uns getan hat, antworten wir zur Ehre Gottes mit »Amen«.
21Gott selbst hat unser und euer Leben auf ein festes Fundament gestellt, auf Christus, und uns mit seinem Geist erfüllt1,21 Wörtlich: und uns gesalbt. – Vgl. »salben/Salbung« in den Sacherklärungen.. 22So drückte er uns sein Siegel auf, wir sind sein Eigentum geworden. Das Geschenk des Geistes in unseren Herzen ist Gottes sicheres Pfand für das, was er uns noch schenken wird.
23Warum bin ich dann nicht wie geplant nach Korinth gekommen? Ich rufe Gott als Zeugen an; er soll mich strafen, wenn ich nicht die Wahrheit sage: Es geschah nur, um euch zu schonen. 24Damit will ich nicht sagen, dass wir über euch und euren Glauben herrschen wollten. – Nein! Unser Auftrag ist es zu helfen, dass ihr euch freuen könnt. Im Glauben steht ihr ja bereits fest.
