1Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.
3¶ Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father.25.3 established…: Heb. confirmed upon him 4But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
5¶ Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield. 6He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver. 7But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim. 8But if thou wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down. 9And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? 11¶ And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand. 12And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
13¶ But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.25.13 the soldiers…: Heb. the sons of the band
14¶ Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them. 15Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand? 16And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.25.16 determined: Heb. counselled

Amazias rei de Judá
(2 Rs 14.1-14, 17-20)
1Amazias tinha 25 anos quando se tornou rei. Reinou durante 29 anos em Jerusalém. O nome da sua mãe era Jeoadã, natural de Jerusalém. 2Fez o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor, mas não de todo o coração.
3Assim que consolidou o seu domínio sobre a nação, mandou matar os homens que tinham assassinado o seu pai. 4Deixou, contudo, os seus filhos em paz, seguindo as ordens do Senhor, na Lei de Moisés, que estabelecem que os pais não poderão ser mortos por causa dos pecados dos filhos, nem os filhos pelos dos pais. A pessoa que merece morrer será morta em razão dos seus próprios crimes.
5Amazias reorganizou também o exército, nomeando comandantes para cada um dos clãs de Judá e Benjamim. Fez depois um recenseamento, ficando a saber que o exército ascendia a 300 000 soldados com a idade de 20 anos para cima, todos treinados e hábeis no uso de lança e escudo. 6Outra das suas deliberações foi pagar 3400 quilos de prata pela contratação de 100 000 mercenários experientes vindos de Israel.
7Veio, porém, ter com ele um homem de Deus com a seguinte mensagem: “Ó rei, não tomes contigo tropas de Israel, porque o Senhor não está com os descendentes de Efraim. 8Se os deixares ir à batalha com as tuas tropas, serás derrotado, por muito que te esforces. Deus tem poder para ajudar e para fazer cair.”
9“E o dinheiro que já gastei?” perguntou Amazias. “Que faço agora?” O homem de Deus retorquiu: “O Senhor tem muito mais para te dar do que isso que aparentemente perdes!”
10Então Amazias mandou embora essas tropas vindas de Efraim, que ficaram iradas, pois tomaram isso como um insulto.
11Amazias encheu-se de coragem e levou o exército até ao vale do Sal, matando ali 10 000 homens de Seir. 12Outros 10 000 foram levados ao cimo de uma elevação e lançados dali abaixo, morrendo dilacerados nas rochas.
13Entretanto, as tropas israelitas que tinham sido mandadas embora fizeram várias incursões contra algumas localidades de Judá, nas vizinhanças de Bete-Horom, na região de Samaria, matando 3000 pessoas e levando consigo grande quantidade de despojos.
14Quando o rei Amazias regressou daquela matança aos edomitas, trouxe consigo ídolos dos deuses do povo de Seir, e começou a queimar-lhes incenso. 15Então a ira do Senhor acendeu-se e mandou um profeta perguntar-lhe: “Porque é que te puseste a prestar culto a esses deuses estrangeiros que não foram capazes de salvar o seu próprio povo das tuas mãos?”
16“Quando foi que pedi a tua opinião?”, retorquiu-lhe o rei. “É melhor calares-te, se não és homem morto!”
Perante isto, o profeta calou-se e não insistiu mais, mas deixou este aviso: “Sei que Deus já determinou destruir-te, por teres adorado esses ídolos e recusado o meu conselho.”
17O rei Amazias de Judá foi ouvir os seus conselheiros; depois declarou guerra ao rei Jeoás de Israel, filho de Jeoacaz e neto de Jeú, desafiando-o a mobilizar o exército e a vir combater contra ele.
18O rei Jeoás enviou, no entanto, a Amazias a seguinte mensagem: “No Líbano um cardo mandou dizer a um cedro: ‘Dá a tua filha em casamento ao meu filho.’ Nessa altura, passou um animal selvagem que pisou o cardo e o esmagou! 19Ficaste muito orgulhoso com a conquista de Edom; contudo, dou-te um conselho: fica em casa e não te metas comigo. Porque haverias de provocar um desastre não só para ti como para Judá?”
20Amazias não lhe deu ouvidos; essa atitude foi estimulada por Deus, que tinha a intenção de o destruir, por ter prestado culto aos deuses de Edom. 21Jeoás, rei de Israel, mandou preparar o seu exército. A batalha começou em Bete-Semes, uma das povoações de Judá. 22Judá foi derrotado e o seu exército teve de fugir, cada um para sua casa. 23O rei Jeoás de Israel capturou o rei Amazias em Bete-Semes e levou-o prisioneiro para Jerusalém. Aí, ordenou que fossem derrubados 200 metros da muralha da cidade, desde a porta de Efraim até à porta do Canto. 24Depois tomou consigo todo o ouro, a prata e todos os objetos de valor que estavam na casa de Deus, ao cuidado de Obede-Edom, assim como os tesouros do palácio; levou também reféns e regressou a Samaria.
O fim do reinado de Amazias
(2 Rs 14.17-20)
25O rei Amazias viveu ainda mais 15 anos depois de Jeoás, o rei de Israel, ter morrido. 26O resto dos acontecimentos da vida de Amazias está escrito no Livro dos Reis de Judá e de Israel. 27A partir da altura em que Amazias se desviou do Senhor, começaram a conspirar contra ele em Jerusalém. Ele fugiu para Laquis, mas perseguiram-no até Laquis e ali o mataram. 28Levaram o seu corpo para Jerusalém, escoltado por um pelotão de cavalaria. Foi enterrado no cemitério real, junto dos seus antepassados, na cidade de Judá.
