1Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah. 2He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. 3And Abijah set the battle in array with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: Jeroboam also set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of valour.13.3 Abijah set: Heb. 4¶ And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel; 5Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? 6Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, is risen up, and hath rebelled against his lord. 7And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them. 8And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods. 9Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.13.9 to consecrate…: Heb. to fill his hand 10But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests, which minister unto the LORD, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites wait upon their business: 11And they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have forsaken him. 12And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.
13¶ But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them. 14And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind: and they cried unto the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets. 15Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. 16And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand. 17And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men. 18Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers. 19And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Beth-el with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephrain with the towns thereof. 20Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and he died.
21¶ But Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters. 22And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.

ユダの王アビヤ
1-2アビヤは、イスラエルの王ヤロブアムの第十八年に、エルサレムで、ユダの新しい王となりました。彼は三年の間王位にあり、母はギブア出身のウリエルの娘ミカヤ（マアカ）でした。彼が王になってまもなく、ユダとイスラエルとの間に戦争がありました。 3アビヤ王の率いる、鍛え抜かれた四十万のユダ軍は、ヤロブアム王の率いる、強力なイスラエル軍八十万と対抗しました。 4ユダ軍がエフライムの山地にあるツェマライム山に到着した時、アビヤ王は、ヤロブアム王とイスラエル軍に向かって叫びました。
5「よく聞け！ ダビデ王の子孫が代々イスラエルの王になるという主の約束を、よもや知らぬはずはあるまい。 6おまえたちの王ヤロブアムは、ダビデの子ソロモンの家来で、主君に反逆した者ではないか。 7そのうえ、ろくでもない不満分子の集団が加わって、ソロモンの子レハブアムに公然と反抗した。レハブアムはまだ若く、臆病だったので、立ち向かうことができなかった。 8ほんとうにおまえたちは、ダビデの子孫の治める主の王国を、打ち負かせるとでも思っているのか。おまえたちの軍勢は、われわれの二倍もあるが、ヤロブアムが神だと言って造った金の子牛のためにのろわれているのだ。 9おまえたちは主の祭司とレビ人を追い出し、代わりに異教の祭司を任命した。ほかの民族のように、若い雄牛一頭と雄羊七頭を持って来る者をだれかれなく受け入れ、おまえたちの神ならぬものの祭司にしている！
10だが、われわれはイスラエルの神を信じる。神を捨てるようなことはしなかった。それに、アロンの直系の子孫だけが祭司で、その働きを助けるのはレビ人だけだ。 11彼らは朝夕、焼き尽くすいけにえを主にささげ、香りの高い香をたき、供えのパンを聖なる机の上に置いている。金の燭台には、毎晩、火がともされている。このように、われわれは主の教えを忠実に守っているが、おまえたちはその主を捨ててしまった。 12これではっきりわかるように、神はわれわれとともにおられ、導いておられる。しかも、主に仕える祭司たちは進軍ラッパを吹き鳴らして、われわれをおまえたちと戦わせようとしている。イスラエルよ、父祖の神、主と戦ってはならない！ とうてい勝ち目はないのだから。」
13-14その間にヤロブアムは、こっそり伏兵を相手の背後に回らせたので、ユダは敵にはさまれたかたちになりました。それを知ったユダの民は主にあわれみを求めて叫び、祭司たちはラッパを吹き鳴らし、 15-16一斉にときの声を上げました。すると、戦いの流れがイスラエルからユダに変わりました。 17その日、アビヤ王とユダ軍は、イスラエル軍のえり抜きの兵士五十万を打ちました。
18-19こうしてユダは、父祖の神、主に信頼してイスラエルを破り、ヤロブアム王の軍勢を追い散らしました。そして、その支配下にあったベテル、エシャナ、エフラインの町、さらに周辺の村々を占領しました。 20イスラエルの王ヤロブアムは、アビヤ王が生きている間勢力を挽回することができず、ついに主に打たれて死にました。
21そうする間にユダの王アビヤは力を増し、十四人の妻をめとり、二十二人の息子と十六人の娘をもうけました。 22アビヤ王の言行のすべては、『預言者イドの注解』に記されています。
