1And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king. 2And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt. 3And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying, 4Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee. 5And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.
6¶ And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people? 7And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever. 8But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him. 9And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us? 10And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins. 11For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.10.11 my father put: Heb. my father laded
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day. 13And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men, 14And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 15So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16¶ And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents. 17But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.10.18 made speed: Heb. strengthened himself 19And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

La dureté de Roboam envers le peuple
(1 R 12.1-24)
1Roboam se rendit à Sichem10.1 Voir note 1 R 12.1., où tout Israël s’était rassemblé pour le proclamer roi. 2Quand Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, qui se trouvait en Egypte où il s’était réfugié pour échapper au roi Salomon, en fut informé, il revint d’Egypte. 3On l’envoya chercher, et Jéroboam vint avec tout Israël parler à Roboam. Ils lui dirent : 4Ton père nous a imposé un joug très pesant. Nous te serons soumis à condition que tu allèges maintenant la lourde servitude et ce joug pesant que ton père nous a imposés.
5Roboam leur répondit : Laissez-moi réfléchir et revenez me trouver après-demain.
Le peuple se retira donc.
6Le roi Roboam consulta les responsables qui avaient conseillé son père Salomon de son vivant. Il leur demanda : Que me conseillez-vous de répondre à ces gens ?
7Les responsables lui dirent : Si aujourd’hui tu te montres bon envers ce peuple, si tu les traites favorablement et si tu leur parles en termes bienveillants, ils seront pour toujours tes serviteurs.
8Mais Roboam n’écouta pas le conseil que lui donnaient les responsables. Il consulta les hommes jeunes de son entourage qui avaient grandi avec lui. 9Il leur demanda : Ces gens me demandent d’alléger le joug que mon père leur a imposé. Que me conseillez-vous de leur répondre ?
10Les hommes jeunes qui avaient grandi avec lui lui répondirent : Ces gens se plaignent en prétendant que ton père a rendu leur joug trop pesant, et ils te demandent de l’alléger ? Eh bien, voici comment tu leur répondras : « Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père. 11Oui, mon père vous a chargés d’un joug pesant, mais moi, je le rendrai encore plus pesant ! Mon père vous a fait marcher à coups de fouet, moi, je vous ferai marcher avec des lanières cloutées. »
12Le surlendemain, Jéroboam et tout le peuple vinrent trouver Roboam comme le roi le leur avait commandé. 13Le roi Roboam ne tint pas compte du conseil des responsables et il parla durement au peuple. 14Il lui répondit comme les hommes jeunes le lui avaient conseillé : Mon père vous a imposé10.14 D’après plusieurs manuscrits hébreux, les versions anciennes, et 1 R 12.14. Les autres manuscrits hébreux ont : je vous imposerai. un joug pesant, leur dit-il, eh bien, moi je le rendrai encore plus pesant. Mon père vous a fait marcher à coups de fouet, moi je vous ferai marcher à coups de lanières cloutées.
15Le roi refusa donc de tenir compte des revendications du peuple, car Dieu dirigeait le cours des événements pour accomplir ce qu’il avait annoncé à Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, par l’intermédiaire d’Ahiya de Silo10.15 Voir 1 R 11.29-39..
La révolte des Israélites du Nord
16Comme le roi ne les écoutait pas, tous les Israélites répliquèrent au roi : Qu’avons-nous à faire avec David ? Nous n’avons rien à voir avec le fils d’Isaï ! Retournons chacun chez soi, gens d’Israël ! Quant à toi, descendant de David, tu n’as qu’à t’occuper de ta propre maison !
Et tous les Israélites rentrèrent chez eux10.16 Voir 2 S 20.1.. 17Roboam régna sur les Israélites qui habitaient les villes de Juda. 18Alors le roi Roboam envoya Hadoram, le chef des corvées, auprès des Israélites du Nord, mais les Israélites le lapidèrent et il mourut. Le roi lui-même réussit de justesse à sauter sur un char pour s’enfuir à Jérusalem. 19C’est ainsi que les Israélites du Nord sont en révolte contre la dynastie de David jusqu’à ce jour.
