1Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.9.1 a Benjamite: or, the son of a man of Jemini9.1 power: or, substance 2And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
3And the asses of Kish Saul’s father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses. 4And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not. 5And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us. 6And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go. 7Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?9.7 is spent…: Heb. is gone out of, etc9.7 have we: Heb. is with us? 8And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.9.8 I have…: Heb. there is found in my hand 9(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.) 10Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. 11¶ And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?9.11 the hill…: Heb. in the ascent of the city 12And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:9.12 sacrifice: or, feast 13As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. 18Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer’s house is. 19And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart. 20And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. 25¶ And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house. 26And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad. 27And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.9.27 a while: Heb. to day
掃羅尋驢
1有一個便雅憫人名叫基士，很有威望，是亞斐亞的玄孫、比歌拉的曾孫、洗羅的孫子、亞別的兒子。 2他的兒子掃羅年輕英俊，在以色列人中無人能比，高出其他人一個頭。 3一天，基士丟失了幾頭驢，他就對兒子掃羅說：「你帶一個僕人去找驢吧。」 4他們找遍了以法蓮的山區、沙利沙地區、沙琳地區和便雅憫地區，都找不著。
5最後，他們來到蘇弗，掃羅對僕人說：「我們還是回家去吧，恐怕我父親不再為驢擔心，反而為我們擔心。」 6但僕人答道：「且慢，這城裡有一位上帝的僕人，很受人敬重，他所說的都會應驗。我們去找他吧，也許他會告訴我們該到哪裡去找驢。」 7掃羅答道：「如果去，我們有什麼可以送給他呢？我們袋裡的食物也吃完了，我們還有什麼可以送給上帝的僕人呢？」 8僕人說：「我這裡還有三克銀子，我們可以送給上帝的僕人，請他告訴我們去哪裡找驢。」 9從前在以色列，如果人們要求問上帝，他們會說：「讓我們去找先見吧。」當時「先知」被稱為「先見」。 10掃羅說：「好，我們去吧。」於是，他們前往上帝僕人住的城。 11他們走上山坡，正要進城的時候，遇見一些少女出來打水，就問：「先見在這裡嗎？」 12她們答道：「他在這裡，就在你們前面。你們快去吧，他今天剛到城裡來，因為今天人們在邱壇獻祭。 13你們一進城，就會在他上邱壇吃祭物之前遇見他。因為他不來，人們不能吃，他要先為祭物祝謝後，人們才可以吃。你們現在上去吧，一定會遇見他。」 14他們就趕往城內，剛走進城，就看見撒母耳迎面而來，要上邱壇去。
15在掃羅來的前一天，耶和華已經啟示撒母耳說： 16「明天這個時候，我會從便雅憫境內差遣一個人到你這裡，你要膏立他做我以色列子民的首領，他會從非利士人手中把我的子民拯救出來，因為我已聽到我子民的呼求，我要施恩給他們。」
17撒母耳看見掃羅的時候，耶和華就對他說：「這就是我對你說的那個人，他將統治我的子民。」 18掃羅來到在城門口的撒母耳面前，問道：「請你告訴我先見住在哪裡？」 19撒母耳答道：「我就是先見。你先上邱壇去，今天你要和我一起吃飯。明天早上我會送你上路，並把你想知道的事告訴你。 20不要再掛念三天前丟失的驢了，已經找到了。以色列人所仰慕的人是誰呢？不是你和你父親全家嗎？」 21掃羅答道：「我來自以色列最小的便雅憫支派，我的家族在便雅憫支派中最小，你何出此言？」
22撒母耳帶著掃羅和他的僕人來到一個大廳，讓他們在請來的三十位客人中坐上座。 23撒母耳對廚師說：「把我交給你的那份祭肉拿來。」 24廚師就拿來那塊腿肉，擺在掃羅面前。撒母耳說：「這是為你留的，請吃吧。這是我在請客人時特意為你留的。」於是，掃羅和撒母耳一起吃飯。 25他們從邱壇下來，回到城裡後，撒母耳把掃羅帶到屋頂上談話。 26次日黎明時分，撒母耳呼喚屋頂上的掃羅：「起來吧，我該送你上路了。」於是掃羅起床後，與撒母耳一起往外走。 27他們來到城邊的時候，撒母耳讓掃羅吩咐僕人先走。僕人離去後，他對掃羅說：「你在這裡留一會兒，我要把上帝的話告訴你。」
