1And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. 2And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; 3And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; 4That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. 5And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. 6And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. 7Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.3.7 Now…: or, Thus did Samuel before he knew the LORD, and before the word of the LORD was revealed unto him 8And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.

15¶ And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision. 16Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I. 17And he said, What is the thing that the Lord hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.3.17 more also: Heb. so add3.17 thing: or, word 18And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. 19¶ And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. 20And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.3.20 established: or, faithful 21And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
Herren kallar den unge Samuel
1Den unge pojken Samuel fortsatte att tjäna Herren hos Eli. Vid den här tiden var budskap från Herren mycket sällsynta. Det var också ovanligt att någon såg en syn.
2Då hände en gång följande när Eli låg på sin plats. Hans ögon hade nu försvagats så att han inte längre kunde se. 3Guds lampa var ännu inte släckt och Samuel låg och sov i Herrens tempel där Guds ark3:3 Guds ark var den guldöverdragna kista där stentavlorna med förbundstexten, tio Guds bud, fanns. fanns.
4Herren kallade då på Samuel. ”Ja”, svarade Samuel, ”här är jag!” 5Sedan sprang han till Eli. ”Här är jag”, sa han. ”Du ropade på mig.” ”Jag ropade inte på dig”, svarade Eli, ”gå tillbaka och lägg dig!” Och Samuel lydde.
6Herren ropade på Samuel en gång till och, som förut, steg Samuel upp och gick till Eli. ”Ja”, svarade han, ”här är jag. Du ropade på mig.” ”Jag har inte ropat på dig, min son”, sa Eli. ”Gå tillbaka och lägg dig!”
7Samuel kände ännu inte Herren och hade aldrig tidigare fått ett budskap från honom. 8När Herren nu för tredje gången ropade på honom, steg Samuel än en gång upp och gick till Eli. ”Ja”, sa han. ”Här är jag! Du ropade på mig.”
Då förstod Eli att det var Herren som hade ropat på pojken, 9och han sa till Samuel: ”Gå och lägg dig igen och om han ropar på dig en gång till, så ska du svara: ’Tala, Herre, din tjänare hör!’ ” Och så gick Samuel tillbaka och lade sig.
10Då kom Herren och ställde sig där och ropade som förut: ”Samuel! Samuel!” Och nu svarade Samuel: ”Tala, din tjänare hör!”
11Herren sa då till Samuel: ”Jag ska göra något i Israel som kommer att ringa i öronen på alla som hör det. 12Då ska jag låta allt det hända som jag har varnat Eli och hans familj för, från början till slut. 13Jag har talat om för honom att jag ska döma hela hans familj för alltid på grund av den synd han känt till, att hans söner hädar mig utan att han ingriper. 14Därför har jag svurit en ed att de synder som Eli och hans söner har begått aldrig kan sonas vare sig genom slaktoffer eller genom några andra offer.”
15Samuel låg sedan kvar ända till morgonen då han öppnade dörrarna till Herrens hus. Han var rädd att berätta för Eli om synen. 16Men Eli ropade på honom: ”Samuel, min son!” ”Här är jag,” svarade Samuel. 17Sedan frågade Eli: ”Vad sa han till dig? Tala om alltihop! Må Gud straffa dig både nu och i framtiden om du döljer något för mig!” 18Och då berättade Samuel exakt utan att dölja någonting vad Herren hade sagt.
”Han är Herren, låt honom göra vad han vill”, svarade Eli.
19Samuel växte upp och Herren var med honom och lät allt vad han sagt gå i uppfyllelse. 20Hela Israel från Dan till Beer Sheva förstod att Samuel verkligen var en Herrens profet.
21Herren fortsatte sedan att visa sig i Shilo. Där uppenbarade han sig för Samuel genom sitt ord.
