1And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.
2And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.25.2 possessions: or, business 3Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.
4¶ And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal did shear his sheep. 5And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name:25.5 greet…: Heb. ask him in my name of peace 6And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast. 7And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: now thy shepherds which were with us, we hurt them not, neither was there ought missing unto them, all the while they were in Carmel.25.7 hurt: Heb. shamed 8Ask thy young men, and they will shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David. 9And when David’s young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.25.9 ceased: Heb. rested
10¶ And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master. 11Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?25.11 flesh: Heb. slaughter
12So David’s young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all those sayings. 13And David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff.
14¶ But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed on them.25.14 railed…: Heb. flew upon them 15But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields:25.15 hurt: Heb. shamed 16They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. 17Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
18¶ Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses.25.18 clusters: or, lumps 19And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal. 20And it was so, as she rode on the ass, that she came down by the covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down against her; and she met them. 21Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good. 22So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall. 23And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, 24And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience, and hear the words of thine handmaid.25.24 audience: Heb. ears 25Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.25.25 regard: Heb. lay it to his heart25.25 Nabal: that is, Fool 26Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.25.26 avenging…: Heb. saving thyself 27And now this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.25.27 blessing: or, present25.27 follow…: Heb. walk at the feet of, etc 28I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days. 29Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as out of the middle of a sling.25.29 as out…: Heb. in the midst of the bought of a sling 30And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel; 31That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.25.31 no grief: Heb. no staggering, or, stumbling
32¶ And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me: 33And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand. 34For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall. 35So David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.
36¶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. 37But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. 38And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, that he died.
39¶ And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife. 40And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife. 41And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord. 42And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.25.42 after her: Heb. at her feet 43David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives.
44¶ But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, which was of Gallim.25.44 Phalti: also called, Phaltiel
Sina David, Nabal at Abigail
1Lumipas ang panahon at namatay si Samuel. Nagtipon ang buong Israel at ipinagluksa ang pagkamatay niya. Inilibing siya sa kanyang tirahan sa Rama.
Pagkatapos nito, lumipat si David sa disyerto ng Maon. 2Doon sa Maon, may isang tao na napakayaman at may lupain sa Carmel. Mayroon siyang 1,000 kambing at 3,000 tupa na kanyang pinapagupitan sa Carmel. 3Ang pangalan ng taong ito ay Nabal at mula siya sa angkan ni Caleb. Ang asawa naman niya ay si Abigail. Matalino at maganda si Abigail pero si Nabal ay masungit at magaspang ang pag-uugali.
4Habang nasa ilang si David, nabalitaan niya na pinapagupitan na ni Nabal ang kanyang mga tupa. 5-6Kaya nagpadala siya ng sampung tao sa Carmel na dala ang mensaheng ito para kay Nabal, “Biyayaan ka sana ng mahabang buhay. Maging masagana sana ang buo mong sambahayan at ang lahat ng pag-aari mo. 7Nabalitaan ko na nagpapagupit ka ng iyong mga tupa. Nang nakasama namin ang mga pastol mo sa Carmel, hindi namin sila sinaktan at walang anumang nawala sa kanila. 8Tanungin mo sila at sasabihin nila ang totoo. Ngayon, nakikiusap ako na pakitaan mo ng kabutihan ang mga tauhan ko, dahil pista ngayon. Ituring mo akong anak at ang mga alipin ko bilang iyong alipin; pakibigay sa amin ang anumang gusto mong ibigay.”
9Pagdating ng mga tauhan ni David kay Nabal, ipinaabot nila ang mensahe ni David, at naghintay. 10Tinanggihan ni Nabal si David. “Sino ba ang David na ito na anak ni Jesse? Sa panahon ngayon, maraming alipin ang tumatakas sa kanilang mga amo. 11Bakit ko naman ibibigay sa iyo ang tinapay, tubig at karneng para sa mga manggugupit ng mga tupa ko, gayong hindi ko nga alam kung saang lupalop kayo nanggaling?”
12Bumalik ang mga tauhan ni David at isinalaysay ang lahat ng sinabi ni Nabal. 13Nang marinig niya ang lahat ng ito, sinabi niya sa kanyang mga tauhan, “Isukbit ninyo ang inyong mga espada!” Kaya isinukbit ng mga tauhan niya ang kanilang mga espada, at ganoon din ang ginawa ni David. Mga 400 tao ang sumama kay David at 200 ang naiwan para bantayan ang mga kagamitan.
14Isa sa mga alipin ni Nabal ang nagsabi kay Abigail na kanyang asawa, “Nagsugo si David ng mga mensahero rito galing sa disyerto para kumustahin ang amo naming si Nabal, pero ininsulto pa niya sila. 15Mabuti ang mga taong iyon sa amin, hindi nila kami ginawan ng anumang masama. Sa buong panahon na naroon kami sa bukid malapit sa kanila, walang anumang nawala sa amin. 16Binantayan nila kami araw at gabi habang nagbabantay kami ng mga tupa. 17Pag-isipan mong mabuti ang nararapat mong gawin dahil mapapahamak ang asawa mo at ang kanyang buong sambahayan. Napakasama niyang tao kaya walang nangangahas na makipag-usap sa kanya.”
18Walang sinayang na oras si Abigail. Nagpakuha siya ng 200 tinapay, dalawang balat na sisidlan na puno ng katas ng ubas, limang kinatay na tupa, isang sako ng binusang trigo, 100 dakot ng pasas, at 200 dakot ng igos. Pagkatapos, ipinakarga niya ito sa mga asno, 19at sinabi sa kanyang mga utusan, “Mauna na kayo, susunod na lang ako.” Pero hindi niya ito ipinaalam sa asawa niyang si Nabal.
20Habang nakasakay si Abigail sa kanyang asno at paliko na sa gilid ng bundok, nakita niyang padating naman si David at ang mga tauhan nito. 21Samantala, sinasabi ni David, “Walang saysay ang pagbabantay natin sa mga ari-arian ni Nabal sa disyerto para walang mawala sa mga ito. Masama pa ang iginanti niya sa mga kabutihang ginawa natin. 22Parusahan sana ako ng Dios nang napakatindi kapag may itinira pa akong buhay na lalaki sa sambahayan niya pagdating ng umaga.”
23Nang makita ni Abigail si David, dali-dali siyang bumaba sa kanyang asno at lumuhod sa harapan ni David bilang paggalang. 24Sinabi niya, “Pakiusap po, pakinggan nʼyo ako. Inaako ko na po ang pagkakamali ng aking asawa. 25Huwag nʼyo na pong pag-aksayahan ng panahon si Nabal. Napakasama niyang tao. Nababagay lang sa kanya ang pangalan niyang Nabal, na ang ibig sabihin ay ‘hangal.’ Ipagpaumanhin nʼyo po pero hindi ko nakita ang mga mensaherong pinapunta nʼyo kay Nabal.
26“Ngayon po, niloob ng Panginoon na hindi matuloy ang paghihiganti at pagpatay ninyo para hindi madungisan ang inyong mga kamay. Sa kapangyarihan ng buhay na Panginoon at ng buhay nʼyo, nawaʼy matulad kay Nabal ang kahihinatnan ng inyong mga kaaway at ng lahat ng naghahangad ng masama laban sa inyo. 27Kaya, kung maaari, tanggapin ninyo ang mga regalong ito na dinala ko para sa inyo at sa inyong mga tauhan. 28Patawarin nʼyo po sana ako kung mayroon man akong mga pagkukulang. Nakakatiyak ako na gagawin kayong hari ng Panginoon at magpapatuloy ang paghahari ninyo sa lahat ng inyong salinlahi, dahil nakikipaglaban kayo para sa kanya. Wala sanang makakapanaig na kasamaan sa inyo habang kayoʼy nabubuhay. 29Kahit may humahabol sa inyo para patayin kayo, iingatan kayo ng Panginoon na inyong Dios. Ililigtas kayo ng kanyang mga kamay tulad ng pag-iingat ng isang tao sa isang mamahaling bagay. Pero ang inyong mga kaaway ay ihahagis na parang batong ibinala sa tirador. 30Kapag natupad na ang lahat ng kabutihang ipinangako sa inyo ng Panginoon at maging hari na kayo ng Israel, 31hindi kayo uusigin ng inyong konsensya dahil hindi kayo naghiganti at pumatay ng walang sapat na dahilan. At kapag pinagtagumpay na kayo ng Panginoon, nakikiusap ako na huwag nʼyo po akong kalimutan na inyong lingkod.”
32Sinabi ni David kay Abigail, “Purihin ang Panginoon, ang Dios ng Israel, na nagpadala sa iyo ngayong araw na ito para makipagkita sa akin. 33Salamat sa Dios sa mabuti mong pagpapasya. Dahil dito, iniwas mo ako sa paghihiganti at pagpatay. 34Kung hindi ka nagmadaling makipagkita sa akin, wala sanang matitirang buhay na lalaki sa sambahayan ni Nabal bukas ng umaga. Isinumpa ko iyan sa buhay na Panginoon, ang Dios ng Israel, na siyang pumigil sa akin sa paggawa sa iyo ng masama.” 35Tinanggap ni David ang mga regalo ni Abigail at sinabi, “Umuwi ka na at huwag ka nang mag-alala. Gagawin ko ang mga sinabi mo.”
36Nang dumating si Abigail sa bahay nila, nagdiriwang sila Nabal na parang pista sa kaharian. Sobrang saya ni Nabal at lasing na lasing, kaya hindi na niya sinabi rito hanggang umaga ang pakikipagkita niya kay David. 37Kinaumagahan, nang wala na ang pagkalasing nito, sinabi sa kanya ni Abigail ang nangyari. Inatake siya sa puso at hindi na nakagalaw. 38Pagkaraan ng sampung araw, pinalala ng Panginoon ang kalagayan niya at siyaʼy namatay.
39Nang mabalitaan ni David na patay na si Nabal, sinabi niya, “Purihin ang Panginoon! Siya ang gumanti kay Nabal dahil sa pang-iinsulto niya sa akin. Hindi na niya hinayaang ako pa ang gumawa noon. Pinarusahan niya si Nabal sa masama niyang ginawa sa akin.”
Pagkatapos, nagpadala ng mensahe si David kay Abigail na hinihiling niya na maging asawa niya ito. 40Pagdating ng mga mensahero sa Carmel, sinabi nila kay Abigail, “Pinapunta kami ni David sa iyo upang sunduin ka at gawing asawa niya.” 41Lumuhod si Abigail at sinabi, “Pumapayag ako. Handa akong paglingkuran siya pati na ang kanyang mga alipin.25:41 pati na ang kanyang mga alipin: sa literal, at sa paghuhugas ng mga paa ng kanyang mga alipin.” 42Dali-daling sumakay si Abigail sa asno at sumama sa mga mensahero ni David. Kasama niya ang lima niyang aliping babae at naging asawa siya ni David. 43Pinakasalan din ni David si Ahinoam na taga-Jezreel, at dalawa silang naging asawa ni David. 44Ang unang asawa ni David na si Mical ay ibinigay ni Saul kay Paltiel na anak ni Laish na taga-Galim.
