1And they continued three years without war between Syria and Israel. 2And it came to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel. 3And the king of Israel said unto his servants, Know ye that Ramoth in Gilead is ours, and we be still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?22.3 still…: Heb. silent from taking it 4And he said unto Jehoshaphat, Wilt thou go with me to battle to Ramoth-gilead? And they said, Go up; for the Lord shall deliver it into the hand of the king. 7And Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might enquire of him? 8And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may enquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. 15¶ So he came to the king. And the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go against Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall we forbear? And he answered him, Go, and prosper: for the LORD shall deliver it into the hand of the king. 16And the king said unto him, How many times shall I adjure thee that thou tell me nothing but that which is true in the name of the LORD? 17And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master: let them return every man to his house in peace. 18And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee that he would prophesy no good concerning me, but evil? 19And he said, Hear thou therefore the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. 20And the LORD said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? 29So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead. 30And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and enter into the battle; but put thou on thy robes. 37¶ So the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria.22.37 was brought: Heb. came 38And one washed the chariot in the pool of Samaria; and the dogs licked up his blood; and they washed his armour; according unto the word of the LORD which he spake. 39Now the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all that he did, and the ivory house which he made, and all the cities that he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 40So Ahab slept with his fathers; and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.
41¶ And Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel. 42Jehoshaphat was thirty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 43And he walked in all the ways of Asa his father; he turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of the LORD: nevertheless the high places were not taken away; for the people offered and burnt incense yet in the high places. 44And Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel. 45Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, and his might that he shewed, and how he warred, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 46And the remnant of the sodomites, which remained in the days of his father Asa, he took out of the land. 47There was then no king in Edom: a deputy was king. 48Jehoshaphat made ships of Tharshish to go to Ophir for gold: but they went not; for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber.22.48 made…: or, had ten ships 49Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat, Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships. But Jehoshaphat would not.
50¶ And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.
51¶ Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned two years over Israel. 52And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin: 53For he served Baal, and worshipped him, and provoked to anger the LORD God of Israel, according to all that his father had done.
Josafat en Achab
1Drie jaar lang werd er geen oorlog gevoerd tussen Syrië en Israël. 2Maar in het derde jaar, terwijl koning Josafat van Juda koning Achab van Israël een bezoek bracht, 3zei Achab tegen zijn hovelingen: ‘Beseft u wel dat de Syriërs nog steeds onze stad Ramot in Gilead bezet houden? En wij zitten hier stil zonder er iets aan te doen!’ 4Hij wendde zich tot Josafat en vroeg hem: ‘Wilt u met uw leger met mij mee optrekken om Ramot in Gilead te heroveren?’ En koning Josafat van Juda antwoordde direct: ‘Maar natuurlijk. U en ik zijn broeders, mijn hele leger en al mijn paarden staan tot uw beschikking.
5Maar,’ voegde hij eraan toe, ‘we zouden het eerst aan de Here moeten vragen, dan weten we wat Hij wil dat wij doen.’ 6Koning Achab riep toen vierhonderd profeten bij zich en vroeg hun: ‘Zal ik Ramot in Gilead aanvallen of niet?’ En zij antwoordden eenstemmig: ‘Ja, ga uw gang maar. God zal u helpen de stad te veroveren.’ 7Maar Josafat vroeg: ‘Is er geen profeet van de Here hier? Ik zou het hem eigenlijk ook nog wel willen vragen.’ 8‘Ja, er is er wel één,’ antwoordde koning Achab, ‘maar ik haat hem, want hij komt nooit eens met goede profetieën. Hij heeft altijd wel iets onheilspellends te vertellen. Hij heet Micha en is een zoon van Jimla.’ ‘Zo moet u niet praten,’ vond Josafat. 9Dus riep Achab een van zijn dienaren en beval hem snel Micha te halen. 10Ondertussen gingen de heidense profeten gewoon door met profeteren voor de twee koningen, die in hun koninklijke gewaden op twee tronen zaten. Deze stonden op een dorsvloer vlakbij de stadspoort. 11Een van de profeten, Zedekia, de zoon van Kenaäna, had ijzeren horens gemaakt en verklaarde: ‘De Here belooft dat u de Syriërs met deze horens zult opdrijven tot zij vernietigd zijn.’ 12Alle anderen stemden daarmee in. ‘Val Ramot in Gilead maar aan,’ zeiden zij, ‘want de Here zal u de overwinning bezorgen!’
13De boodschapper die Micha ophaalde, zei onderweg tegen hem: ‘De profeten hebben de koning zonder uitzondering een gunstig advies uitgebracht. Sluit u daarom bij hen aan en geef net als zij een gunstig advies.’ 14Maar Micha zei tegen hem: ‘Ik zweer dat ik alleen dat zal zeggen wat de Here mij opdraagt.’ 15Toen hij was aangekomen, vroeg de koning hem: ‘Micha, moeten wij Ramot in Gilead aanvallen of niet?’ ‘Ga gerust uw gang,’ zei Micha hem. ‘U zult een grote overwinning behalen, want de Here zal ervoor zorgen dat u de stad verovert!’ 16‘Hoe vaak moet ik u nog vertellen dat u alleen moet vertellen wat de Here u opdraagt?’ zei de koning streng. 17Micha zei: ‘Ik zag alle Israëlieten verspreid op de bergen dwalen, als schapen zonder herder. En de Here zei: “Hun koning is dood, stuur hen naar huis.” ’ 18Zich naar Josafat kerend, zei Achab klagend: ‘Heb ik u niet gezegd dat het zo zou gaan? Hij brengt me nooit eens goed nieuws. Het is altijd slecht.’
19Micha sprak opnieuw en zei: ‘Luister naar wat de Here verder nog te zeggen heeft. Ik zag de Here op een troon zitten en de hemelse legers stonden om Hem heen. 20-21 Toen zei de Here: “Wie zal Achab verleiden naar Ramot in Gilead te trekken en daar te sterven?” Er werden verschillende voorstellen gedaan tot plotseling een geest naar voren kwam en zei: “Ik zal het doen.” 22“Hoe?” vroeg de Here. Hij antwoordde: “Ik zal een liegende geest in de monden van al zijn profeten zijn.” En de Here zei: “Zo zal het gebeuren, u zult erin slagen. Ga uw gang maar.” 23Begrijpt u het niet? De Here heeft een leugenachtige geest in de monden van al deze profeten gelegd, maar het belangrijkste is dat de Here heeft besloten een ramp over u te brengen.’ 24Zedekia, de zoon van Kenaäna, liep naar Micha toe en gaf hem een klap in het gezicht. ‘Sinds wanneer liet de Geest van de Here mij in de steek en sprak Hij tegen u?’ wilde hij weten. 25En Micha antwoordde: ‘Daar komt u nog wel achter als u zich op een dag in een kamer zult hebben verstopt.’
26-27 Toen gaf koning Achab bevel Micha gevangen te nemen. ‘Breng hem naar Amon, de bestuurder van de stad, en naar mijn zoon Joas en zeg tegen hen: “De koning zegt dat deze man moet worden opgesloten. Geef hem alleen water en brood—net genoeg om hem in leven te houden—tot ik in vrede terugkeer!” ’ 28‘Als u in vrede terugkeert,’ merkte Micha op, ‘zal blijken dat de Here niet door mij heeft gesproken.’ Hij draaide zich om naar al de mensen die daar stonden te luisteren en zei: ‘Onthoud goed wat ik heb gezegd.’ 29Zo leidden koning Achab van Israël en koning Josafat van Juda hun legers naar Ramot in Gilead. 30Achab zei tegen Josafat: ‘U kunt uw koninklijke gewaad dragen, maar ik niet.’ En Achab ging vermomd de strijd in. Hij droeg het uniform van een gewone soldaat. 31De koning van Syrië had namelijk zijn tweeëndertig strijdwagenleiders bevolen alleen te strijden tegen de koning van Israël en tegen niemand anders. 32-33 Toen zij koning Josafat zagen in zijn koninklijke gewaden, dachten zij: ‘Die moeten we hebben.’ Zij brachten hun wagens in aanvalspositie en gingen op hem af. Maar toen Josafat om hulp schreeuwde en zij merkten dat hij niet de koning van Israël was, lieten zij hem met rust. 34Een van de Syrische strijders schoot zonder een bepaald doel te hebben een pijl af en raakte koning Achab precies tussen twee delen van zijn wapenrusting. ‘Breng mij van het slagveld, ik ben zwaar gewond,’ steunde de koning tegen zijn wagenmenner. 35De strijd werd in de loop van de dag steeds heviger en koning Achab hield zich rechtop staande in zijn strijdwagen, terwijl het bloed uit zijn wond op de bodem van zijn wagen bleef druppelen. Tegen de avond bezweek hij ten slotte. 36-37 Toen de zon daalde, werd er overal geroepen: ‘De strijd is voorbij, ga terug naar huis. De koning is dood.’ Zijn lichaam werd meegenomen naar Samaria en daar begraven. 38Toen zijn strijdwagen bij de vijver in Samaria werd afgewassen, op dezelfde plek waar ook de prostituees zich wasten, kwamen de honden erop af en likten het bloed van de koning op, precies zoals de Here had gezegd.
39De rest van Achabs geschiedenis—ook het verhaal over het ivoren paleis en al de steden die hij bouwde—staat beschreven in de Kronieken van de koningen van Israël. 40Zo werd Achab bij zijn voorouders begraven en volgde zijn zoon Ahazia hem op als koning van Israël. 41Josafat, de zoon van Asa, werd koning over Juda in het vierde regeringsjaar van koning Achab van Israël. 42Josafat was vijfendertig jaar toen hij de troon besteeg en regeerde vijfentwintig jaar vanuit Jeruzalem. Zijn moeder was Azuba, een dochter van Silhi. 43-44 Evenals zijn vader Asa gehoorzaamde hij de Here in alles, behalve in één ding: hij verwoestte de tempels in de heuvels niet en daarom bleven zijn onderdanen daar offers en reukwerk verbranden. 45Bovendien sloot hij vrede met koning Achab van Israël.
46De overige daden van Josafat, zijn moed en zijn oorlogen, zijn beschreven in de Kronieken van de koningen van Juda. 47Josafat heeft ook iedereen die na de tijd van zijn vader Asa nog tempelprostitutie bedreef, uit het land verjaagd. 48In die tijd had Edom geen koning, maar slechts een stadhouder. 49Koning Josafat bouwde in Tarsis grote vrachtschepen om daarmee in Ofir goud te halen. Zij kwamen echter nooit aan, want zij leden schipbreuk bij Esjon-Geber. 50Daarna had Ahazia, de zoon en opvolger van koning Achab, Josafat voorgesteld bij een volgende keer zijn mannen mee te laten gaan, maar Josafat had dat aanbod van de hand gewezen. 51Na zijn dood werd koning Josafat begraven bij zijn voorouders in Jeruzalem, de stad van zijn voorvader David. Zijn zoon Joram volgde hem op.
52In het zeventiende regeringsjaar van koning Josafat van Juda, werd Achabs zoon Ahazia koning over Israël in Samaria. Hij bleef dat twee jaar. 53-54 Hij was echter een slechte koning, want hij trad in de voetsporen van zijn ouders en Jerobeam, die Israël hadden aangevoerd in het aanbidden van Baäl. Op die manier beledigde Ahazia de Here, de God van Israël en wekte hij zijn toorn op.
