1Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel. 2And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God. 3And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the joinings; and brass in abundance without weight; 4Also cedar trees in abundance: for the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar wood to David. 5And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death.
6¶ Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build an house for the LORD God of Israel. 7And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God: 8But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight. 9Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days.22.9 Solomon: that is, Peaceable 10He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever. 11Now, my son, the LORD be with thee; and prosper thou, and build the house of the LORD thy God, as he hath said of thee. 12Only the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel, that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God. 13Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed. 14Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add thereto.22.14 trouble: or, poverty 15Moreover there are workmen with thee in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work.22.15 workers…: that is, masons and carpenters 16Of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and be doing, and the LORD be with thee.
17¶ David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying, 18Is not the LORD your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people. 19Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of the LORD.

1そこで、ダビデ王は言いました。「このオルナンの打穀場こそ、主の神殿を建て、イスラエルの焼き尽くすいけにえをささげる祭壇を築くのにふさわしい場所だ。」
神殿建設の準備
2王はイスラエル在住のすべての外国人を召集し、神殿建築用の石を切り出す仕事に当たらせました。 3彼らは、門の扉の釘および留め金用の鉄を大量に作りました。また、とても量りきれないほどの青銅を精錬しました。 4ツロとシドンの人々は、おびただしい数の杉の丸太を、いかだに組んで運んで来ました。
5「ソロモンはまだ若くて未熟だ。主の神殿は、世界中に知れ渡るほどのすぐれた建築にしなければならない。いざというときのために、今から準備をしておく。」
ダビデはこう考えて、自分が生きている間に多くの建築材料を集めました。 6そのあとでその子ソロモンに、イスラエルの神のために神殿を建てるよう命じたのです。
7-8「私はかねがね神殿を建てたいと思っていたが、そうしてはならないと主が仰せられたのだ。『あなたは大きな戦いで多くの人を殺し、わたしの前に大地を血で染めてきた。だから、わたしの神殿を建てることはできない。 9だがあなたに一人の子を授ける。その子の代には周囲の国と平和を保つようにするので、彼はソロモン（「平和」を意味する）と呼ばれる。わたしは彼の治世の間、イスラエルに平和と平穏をもたらそう。 10彼こそが神殿を建てるのだ。彼はわたしの子となり、わたしは彼の父となる。わたしは彼の子孫にいつまでもイスラエルを治めさせる』と。 11どうか今、主があなたとともにおられ、主があなたについて語られたとおり、あなたが神殿をりっぱに建て上げることができるように。 12主があなたに正しい判断力を与えて、イスラエルの王となったとき、主の教えをすべて守れるようにしてくださるように。 13主がモーセを通してイスラエルにお与えになった教えを、あなたが注意深く守るなら、あなたは栄える。何ものも恐れず、強く、雄々しく、熱心でありなさい。
14私は苦労して、金十万タラント、銀百万タラント、それに量りきれないほど多くの鉄や青銅を集めた。壁用の木材や石材も集めた。これだけあれば、工事の第一段階は間に合うだろう。 15あなたには、数えきれないほど大ぜいの石工や大工、さまざまな種類の熟練工がついている。 16彼らはみな金や銀の細工人、鉄や青銅を扱う専門家ばかりだ。さあ、仕事にかかるがよい。主が共におられるように。」
17そして王は、イスラエルの全指導者に、ソロモンを助けて神殿建設に当たるように命じました。
18「あなたがたには主がついておられ、周囲の国々との間に平和が与えられてきたではないか。私が神の民のために、御名によってこれらの国々を服させたからだ。 19さあ、全身全霊をかけてあなたがたの神、主に従いなさい。そして、主の建てられる神殿に、契約の箱と礼拝に用いる聖なる器具を運び入れなさい。」
