1-2身分の高い者も低い者も、金持ちも貧しい人も、
世界中の人々に、私のことばに耳を傾けてほしい。
3この口から出ることばは、
人の心の奥まで見通すことができ、
知恵に満ちているのです。
4竪琴の伴奏に合わせ、
奥深い人生の問いに答えて歌いましょう。
5悩みが訪れ、敵に囲まれようと、
少しも恐れることはありません。
6彼らは金に信頼し、
財産を誇っています。
7しかし、王に負けないくらい裕福な彼らも、
兄弟の罪を帳消しにすることはできません。
罪の赦しは金では買えないのです。
8-9たましいはあまりにも高価なので、
この世の富をいくら積んでも買い戻せません。
世界中の金をかき集めても、
ただ一人分の永遠のいのちも買い与えられません。
地獄から救い出すことはできないのです。
10あなたがた金持ちも、傲慢な者も、賢い者も、
結局、同じように死ぬ運命にあります。
愚かで、無知な者たちより
長生きできるわけではありません。
しかも、わずかな金すら持って死ねはしないのです。
11あなたがたは、まるで
永久にその土地に住めるかのように、
自分の名をつけています。
12しかし、どんなに栄華をきわめた人間でも、
死ぬ時は動物とそう変わりません。
13全く、取るに足りない存在なのです。
それなのに、そういう人々は死後も、
非常に賢い人物として
引き合いに出されたりもします。
14死が全人類を飼い慣らしています。
異なる世界に目覚めたその朝、
邪悪な者たちは正しい人々の奴隷となるのです。
死んでしまえば、
金の力により頼むことはできなくなります。
金を持って死ぬことはできないのですから。
15しかし、神は私のたましいを
死の力から買い戻してくださいます。
私を迎え入れてくださるのです。
16ですから、悪者が金持ちになっても、
りっぱな邸宅を構えていても、
気を落とすことはありません。
17死ぬ時には、名誉はおろか、
何一つ持って行けないのですから。
18生きている間中、幸せ者だと自負し、
世間からも称賛されるような人でも、
19やがてはみなと同じように死に絶え、
永遠の闇に沈んでいくのです。
20どんなに華やかな生涯を送ろうと、
人は動物と変わりなく死を迎えるのです。
Psalm 49In Hebrew texts 49:1-20 is numbered 49:2-21.
For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.
1Hear this, all you peoples;
listen, all who live in this world,
2both low and high,
rich and poor alike:
3My mouth will speak words of wisdom;
the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.
4I will turn my ear to a proverb;
with the harp I will expound my riddle:
5Why should I fear when evil days come,
when wicked deceivers surround me –
6those who trust in their wealth
and boast of their great riches?
7No-one can redeem the life of another
or give to God a ransom for them –
8the ransom for a life is costly,
no payment is ever enough –
9so that they should live on for ever
and not see decay.
10For all can see that the wise die,
that the foolish and the senseless also perish,
leaving their wealth to others.
11Their tombs will remain their houses49:11 Septuagint and Syriac; Hebrew In their thoughts their houses will remain for ever,
their dwellings for endless generations,
though they had49:11 Or generations, / for they have named lands after themselves.
12People, despite their wealth, do not endure;
they are like the beasts that perish.
13This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
and of their followers, who approve their sayings.49:13 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here and at the end of verse 15.
14They are like sheep and are destined to die;
death will be their shepherd
(but the upright will prevail over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
far from their princely mansions.
15But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;
he will surely take me to himself.
16Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
when the splendour of their houses increases;
17for they will take nothing with them when they die,
their splendour will not descend with them.
18Though while they live they count themselves blessed –
and people praise you when you prosper –
19they will join those who have gone before them,
who will never again see the light of life.
20People who have wealth but lack understanding
are like the beasts that perish.
