ベミヤニン族による暴行事件
1イスラエルにまだ王がいなかったころ、あるレビ人がエフライムの山地の奥に住んでいました。その人は、ユダのベツレヘムから一人の娘をそばめとして連れて来ました。 2ところが彼女はその人をきらって、ベツレヘムの実家へ逃げ帰り、四か月もそこにいました。 3そこで夫は従者を一人伴い、そばめを乗せるろばをもう一頭連れて、彼女を連れ戻そうと会いに出かけたのです。彼女は訪ねて来た夫を招き入れ、父親に引き合わせると、父親も歓待してくれました。 4勧められるまま三日間滞在し、うちとけて、楽しい時を過ごしました。
5四日目の朝早く、出立しようと腰を上げると、父親は、朝食をすませてからにするよう熱心に勧めます。 6そうこうするうち、たいそう楽しかったのか、父親は、もう一晩泊まってくれとしきりに頼むのです。 7初めはなかなか承知しませんでしたが、しゅうとがあまりに頼むので断りきれず、泊まることにしました。 8翌朝、二人が早く起きると、またも父親が、「夕方までいてください。そして、日暮れ前にお発ちなさい」と、拝み倒さんばかりに頼むのです。二人はこの日も、ごちそう攻めに会いました。
9午後になって、夫婦と従者は出立の用意をしました。すると、しゅうとが言いました。「もう日も暮れかかった。今晩だけ泊まってお行きなさい。楽しい最後の晩を過ごそうじゃないか。明日の朝早く発てばいいだろう。」
10しかし、今度ばかりは耳を貸さず、彼らは出立し、日暮れまでに、エブスとも呼ばれたエルサレムの近くまで来ました。 11従者が主人に言いました。「日が暮れかかっておりますので、これ以上旅を続けるわけにはいきません。今夜はここに泊まってはいかがでしょう。」
12-13「いや、だめだ。イスラエル人のいない異教徒の町だから。ギブアか、できればラマまで行こう。」
14こうして、一行は旅を続けました。ベニヤミン族の村ギブアまで来た時、ちょうど日が沈みました。 15ここで一泊しようと町へ入って行きましたが、だれも招き入れてくれません。しかたなく町の広場で野宿することにしました。 16ちょうどそこへ、野良仕事を終えた老人が通りかかりました。そこはベニヤミンの領地でしたが、この老人はエフライムの山地出身で、今はギブアに住んでいる人でした。 17広場に野宿している旅人に目を留めた老人は、「どちらからお越しかな。どこまで行かれるのじゃ」と尋ねました。
18「ユダのベツレヘムから戻る途中です。シロからそう遠くないエフライムの山奥に住んでおります。今夜は、どこの家にも泊めてもらえなかったのです。 19ろばの餌も私たちの食糧やぶどう酒も、たくさん持っています。」
20「お気づかいは無用ですよ。私の家にお泊まりなさい。こんな所に野宿してはいけない。」
21老人は一行を自宅に案内しました。ろばにたっぷりまぐさをやったあと、共に食卓を囲みました。 22夕食の席がしだいにはなやいできた時、ならず者の一団が家を取り囲み、戸をたたき始めたのです。彼らは大声で、「おまえの所に泊まった男を出せ。そいつに興味があるのだ」とどなります。 23老人は外へ出て、彼らと話し合いました。「そんな悪いことはよしなされ。あの方は私の客人だ。 24代わりに、私のところの生娘と客人のそばめを差し出そう。いま二人を連れて来るから、好きなようにすればいい。ただし、客人には指一本ふれてくれるな。」
25それでも彼らは聞き入れません。すると客人のレビ人は、自分のそばめを外のならず者の前に放り出しました。彼らは夜通し代わる代わる彼女を辱め、夜が明けるころようやく解放したのです。 26彼女は、明るくなるまで戸口に倒れたままでした。
27旅立とうとして夫が戸を開けると、自分のそばめが手を敷居にかけたまま入口に倒れているのを見ました。 28「さあ、立ちなさい。出かけよう」と声をかけましたが、何の返事もありません。すでに彼女は死んでいたのです。彼は死体をろばに乗せ、家まで運びました。 29家に着くと、ナイフで死体を十二に切り分け、一つずつイスラエルの各部族に送りました。 30それを見た民はみな、ベニヤミン人の野蛮な行為に怒りをかきたてられました。「エジプトを出て以来、こんなひどい出来事があっただろうか。この事件を見過ごすわけにはいかない。」

5¶ And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.19.5 Comfort: Heb. Strengthen 6And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry. 7And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again. 8And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. 16¶ And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites. 17And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou? 18And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.19.18 receiveth: Heb. gathereth 19Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing. 20And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. 21So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
22¶ Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him. 23And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly. 24Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.19.24 so vile…: Heb. the matter of this folly 25But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go. 26Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light. 27And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold. 28And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
29¶ And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel. 30And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
