蛇の誘惑
1さて、主なる神が造ったものの中で、蛇が最も賢い動物でした。蛇は女に、ことば巧みに話を持ちかけました。「ほんとうにそのとおりなんですかね？ ほかでもない、園の果実はどれも食べてはいけないという話ですよ。神様は、これっぽっちも食べてはならないと言ったっていうじゃないですか。」
2-3「そんなことないわ。食べるのは少しもかまわないのよ。ただね、園の中央にある木の実だけは、食べてはいけないの。そればかりか、さわってもいけないんですって。さもないと死んでしまうって、神様はおっしゃったわ。」
4「ほおーっ。でも、それはうそっぱちですよ。死ぬだなんて、でたらめもいいところだ。 5神様はわかっているんです。その実を食べたら、善と悪の見分けがついて神様のようになってしまうってことを。」
6言われてみれば、そう思えないこともありません。それに、その実はとてもきれいで、おいしそうなのです。「あれを食べたら何でもよくわかるようになるんだわ。」女はそう思いながら見ていると、もう我慢できなくなり、とうとう実をもいで食べてしまいました。そばにいたアダムにも分け与えたので、彼もいっしょに食べました。 7はっと気がつくと、なんと、二人とも裸ではありませんか。急に恥ずかしくなって、とっさにいちじくの葉をつなぎ合わせ、腰の回りを覆いました。
8その日の夕方のことです。主なる神が園の中を歩いておられる気配がしたので、二人はあわてて木陰に隠れました。 9神の呼ぶ声が聞こえます。「アダム、なぜ隠れるのだ。」
10「あなたがおいでになるのに私は裸だったからです。こんな姿はお見せできません。」
11「裸だということを、いったいだれが教えたのか。あれほど食べるなと言ったあの木から実を取って食べたのか。」
12「は、はい。でも、あなたが私といっしょにしてくださったこの女がくれたので……。」
13そこで神は女に尋ねました。「いったいどうして、こんなことをしたのだ。」
「蛇がいけないのです。私はただ、だまされただけです。」
14それを聞いて、神は蛇に言いました。「おまえがそんなことをした罰だ。いいか、あらゆる家畜、野生の動物の中で、おまえだけがのろわれるようになる。生きている間中、ちりの中をはい回るがいい。 15これからのち、おまえと女は敵対するようになる。おまえの子孫と女の子孫も同じだ。女はおまえを恐れるだろう。子孫同士も、互いに相手を敵視するようになる。おまえは彼（キリストを暗示する）のかかとにかみついて傷を負わせるが、彼に頭を踏み砕かれてしまうのだ。」
16次に女に向かって、神は言いました。「あなたは苦しみ抜いて子どもを産む。それでもなお夫の愛を求めるが、彼はあなたを支配する。」
17最後に神はアダムに言いました。「あれほど食べてはいけないと言ったのに、あなたはそれを食べたので、土地はのろわれたものとなった。あなたは生きるために、一生あくせく働かなければならない。 18土地にはいばらとあざみが生え、あなたは野草を食べるようになる。 19死ぬまで汗水流して土地を耕し、働いて糧を得、そしてついに死に、再び土に帰る。土から造られたのだから、また土に帰らなければならないのだ。」
20アダムは妻をエバ〔「いのちを与える者」の意〕と呼びました。彼女が全人類の母となるからです。 21神はアダムと妻エバに、動物の皮で作った服を着せました。 22それからこう言われました。「人間は、われわれと同じように、善悪の区別がわかるようになってしまった。この先、『いのちの木』にも手を出し、永遠に生きることがないようにしなければならない。」
23結局、主なる神は人間をエデンの園から永久に追放し、土地を耕させることに決めました。 24こうして神は、人間を追放すると、エデンの園の東に炎の剣を置き、力ある天使とともにいのちの木への道を守らせました。
1Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?3.1 Yea…: Heb. Yea, because, etc. 2And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.3.6 pleasant: Heb. a desire 7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.3.7 aprons: or, things to gird about 8And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.3.8 cool: Heb. wind
9And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
14And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. 16Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.3.16 to thy…: or, subject to thy husband
17And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;3.18 bring…: Heb. cause to bud 19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. 20And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.3.20 Eve: Heb. Chavah: that is Living 21Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
22¶ And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
