イサクの結婚
1アブラハムは神の祝福を豊かに受けて、何不自由なく暮らしていましたが、もうかなりの高齢になっていました。 2そんなある日、アブラハムは家を管理させていた最年長の召使に言いました。 3「天と地を治める神、主にかけて誓ってくれ。私の息子をカナン人の娘と結婚させてはならない。 4私の故郷に住む親類のところへ行き、嫁を見つけて来てはくれまいか。」
5「そうおっしゃいましても、何分、あまりにも遠い所でございます。ここまで嫁に来ようという娘さんがいるかどうか……。もし見つからなかったら、どういたしますか。イサク様をあちらへお連れして、ご親類の方たちといっしょに住むようにいたしましょうか。」
6「いいや、だめだ。どんなことがあっても、それだけはできない。 7天の神様から、私はご命令を受けたのだ。あの土地と親族から離れるようにと。それに、私と私の子孫にこの土地を与えるというお約束もある。そう言われる以上、神様が天使を遣わして、どうすればよいか教えてくださるはずだ。息子の嫁はきっと見つかる。 8だが、どうしてもうまくいかない場合は……しかたがない、その時は一人で帰って来なさい。ただ、どんなことがあっても、息子をあそこへ連れて行くことだけはならない。」
9召使は、指示どおりにすると心から誓いました。 10さっそく、旅行の準備にかからなければなりません。まず、らくだを十頭選びました。また、贈り物として最上の物を幾つかより分けました。それを全部らくだに積み終えると、一行はナホル（アブラハムの兄弟）の住むアラム・ナハライム地方（現在のイラクの一地域）へ向かったのです。 11いよいよ目的地に着くという時、アブラハムの召使は、町はずれの泉のそばにらくだを座らせました。ちょうど夕方で、女たちが水くみに来る時刻でした。
12彼は祈りました。「私の主人アブラハムの神様、どうぞご主人様に恵みをお与えください。また、私がこの旅の目的を果たせますよう、お助けください。 13いま私は、この泉のかたわらで、娘たちが水をくみに来るのを待っています。 14そこで、こうしていただけないでしょうか。娘たちに水を下さいと頼むつもりですが、その時もし、『ええ、どうぞ。らくだにも飲ませましょう』と言ってくれたら、その娘さんこそイサク様の妻となるべき娘だ、ということにしてください。そうすれば、主人アブラハムへの神様のお恵みを知ることができます。」
15-16このように祈っていると、リベカという美しい娘が水がめを肩にのせ、泉にやって来ました。そして、水がめに水をいっぱい入れました。彼女の父親はベトエルと言い、アブラハムの兄弟ナホルと妻ミルカの息子でした。 17アブラハムの召使はさっそく彼女に走り寄って、水を飲ませてほしいと頼みました。 18「どうぞ、どうぞ」と、その娘はすぐに水がめを下ろし、彼が飲み終わるのを見はからって、 19こう言いました。「そうそう、らくだにもたっぷり飲ませてあげましょう。」 20彼女は水をおけにあけると、また小走りでくみに行き、 21すべてのらくだに飲ませたのでした。召使は、はたして彼女が自分の探していた娘なのかどうか見きわめようと、無言のまま、じっと彼女のかいがいしい仕事ぶりを見守っていました。 22そして、らくだが水を飲み終わる頃合に、金の鼻輪と、金の腕輪を二つ、彼女に渡して尋ねました。 23「つかぬことを伺いますが、お父様のお名前は何とおっしゃるのですか。それに、できれば今夜、お宅に泊めていただくわけにはまいりませんでしょうか。」
24「父はベトエルです。ナホルとミルカの息子ですよ。もちろん、ご遠慮はいりません。どうぞお泊まりください。 25らくだのためのわらや餌も十分ありますし、お客様用のお部屋もございます。」
26老召使は立ったまま頭を垂れ、その場で主を礼拝しました。 27「主人アブラハムの神様、ありがとうございます。なんというお恵みでしょう。主人への約束を、こんなにもすばらしい方法でかなえてくださるとは。主人の親族にこんなに早く会えるとは思ってもみませんでした。何もかもあなたのお引き合わせです。ほんとうにありがとうございます。」
28一方、娘は家へ駆け戻り、家族に客のことを話しました。 29-30話を聞いたリベカの兄ラバンは、鼻輪と腕輪を見ると、大急ぎで泉に駆けつけました。老人はまだそこにいて、らくだのそばに立っていました。 31「ここにおいででしたか。お話は伺いました。これも、主の特別の祝福に違いありません。さあさあ、こんな町はずれに立っていないで、どうぞ家へおいでください。部屋はお越しを待つばかりになっていますし、らくだを休ませる場所もあります。」
32勧めに従い、老召使はラバンについて行きました。ラバンは、らくだにわらと餌を与え、供の者たちにも足を洗う水を出しました。 33やがて夕食の時間になりました。いよいよ話を切り出す時です。老召使は言いました。「お食事を頂く前に、ぜひともお聞き願いたいことがあります。どういうわけで私がここにまいったか、その用向きをお話ししなければなりません。」
「かまいませんとも。そのご用向きを伺いましょう」と、ラバンが促します。
34「実は、私の主人はアブラハムと申しまして、 35主に特別な祝福を頂いております。土地の人々からも大いに尊敬されるりっぱな人です。家畜も多く、金銀をはじめ、多くの財産もあります。奴隷も大ぜいおり、らくだやろばもたくさんいます。 36奥様はたいへん年を取ってからお子さんに恵まれ、主人は全財産をこの息子さんに譲りました。 37ところで、主人が申しますには、息子イサク様をカナンの地の女と結婚させてはならない、というのでございます。 38どうしてもこの遠い国まで来て、ご兄弟の親族の中から花嫁を連れて帰れというご命令で。 39私は万一の場合を考えまして、『もし、いっしょに来るという娘さんが見つからなかったらどういたしましょう』と尋ねました。 40すると主人は、そんな心配はいらない、と申します。『必ず見つかる。これまで私は主のお心に背いたことはない。大丈夫、主が天使を遣わして、必ずうまくいくようにしてくださる。だから、私の親類から嫁を見つけて来なさい。 41必ずそうすると誓ってもらう。それでも万一、娘をこんな遠くにはよこせないと断られたら、その時はしかたがない。そのまま一人で帰って来てよい』と、そう申すのでございます。
42そのようなわけで、今日の午後、泉にたどり着いた時、私はこう祈りました。『主人アブラハムの神様、もしも私が使命を無事に果たせるようにお助けくださるのでしたら、どうぞこのようにしてください。 43私はちょうど泉のそばにおりますから、水をくみに来る娘さんに、「水を飲ませてください」と頼みましょう。 44そして、もし娘さんが、「ええ、どうぞ。らくだにも飲ませましょう」と答えたら、その娘さんこそ、神様がご主人の息子の嫁として選んだ人だ、ということにしてください。』
45こうお祈りしている最中に、リベカさんがいらしたのです。水がめを肩に載せ、泉に降りると、なみなみと水をくんでいらしたので、『すみませんが、水を飲ませてください』とお願いしました。 46うれしいことに、リベカさんはすぐ水がめを下ろして、飲ませてくださるではありませんか。そればかりではありません。『そうそう、らくだにもたっぷり飲ませましょう』と言って、そのとおりなさったのです。 47私ははやる気持ちをぐっと抑えて尋ねました。『失礼ですが、どなたの娘さんですか？』『ナホル家の者です。父はベトエルといい、ナホルとミルカの息子です』とおっしゃるのを聞いて、もう間違いないと思いました。それでさっそく、鼻輪と腕輪を差し上げたわけです。 48私は頭を垂れ、主人アブラハムの神様のすばらしいお引き合わせに、心からお礼を申し上げました。こんなにも早く、主人のご兄弟と縁続きの娘さんにお会いできるとは、思いもよらなかったものですから。 49と、こういうわけなのです。いかがなものでしょう。率直にお気持ちを聞かせていただけないでしょうか。私の主人の願いをお聞き届けくださるなら、願ってもないことです。いずれにしましても、ご返事を頂ければ、私は進む方向を決めることができます。」
50「神様があなたを送って来られたのは明らかですから、私たちが何を言えましょう」とラバンとベトエルは答え、ベトエルが続けました。「とすれば、お断りするわけにもまいりません。 51どうぞ娘リベカを連れて行ってください。神様のお示しになったとおり、ご主人の息子さんの妻となさってください。」
52答えを聞くと、アブラハムの召使はひざまずいて主を礼拝しました。 53それから、純金や純銀の台にはめ込んだ宝石や美しい衣装を取り出して、リベカに与え、母親と兄にも、たくさんの高価な贈り物をしたのです。
54ようやく一段落ついたところで夕食をとり、その晩、老召使は供の者たちといっしょに泊まりました。そして次の朝早く、彼は言いました。「どうもお世話になりました。そうゆっくりもできませんので、主人のところへ帰らせていただきたいのですが。」
55「それはまた急なお話で……。せめて十日ばかりはよろしいではありませんか。リベカもいろいろ準備があることですし、これから先、もう会えないかもしれません。ゆっくり名残を惜しんでからにしていただくわけにはいきませんか。」母親と兄は、何とか引き止めようとします。
56しかし召使は、「おことばを返すようですが、やはり帰らせてください。主のおかげで用向きも無事に果たせたことですし、一刻も早く帰って主人に報告したいのです。」
57「そうまでおっしゃるのですか。では、こうしたらいかがでしょう。娘を呼んで本人の気持ちを直接聞きましょう。」
58二人はリベカを呼んで尋ねました。「どうだ、今すぐこの方といっしょに行くかね。」
「はい、まいります。」
59本人が承知した以上、断る理由もありません。リベカが小さい時からの乳母をつけて送り出すことにしました。 60別れる時、彼らはリベカを祝福しました。「妹よ。数えきれないほど多くの国民の母となるように。おまえの子孫が、すべての敵に打ち勝つように。」
61こうしてリベカと使用人の少女たちは、らくだに乗り、老召使といっしょに出発しました。
62一方、このころイサクはネゲブに住んでいましたが、ちょうどベエル・ラハイ・ロイから帰って来たところでした。 63夕暮れの野を散歩しながら物思いにふけっていた時です。ふと目を上げると、向こうかららくだの一行が来るのが見えます。 64リベカもイサクに気づき、すぐにらくだから降りました。 65リベカは老召使に尋ねました。「あそこにいらっしゃる方はどなたですの？ 私たちを迎えにいらしたのかしら。」「おお、あれが若だんな様でございますよ。」そう言われて、彼女はあわててベールをかぶりました。 66老召使はイサクにこれまでの一部始終を話しました。
67イサクはリベカを、亡き母サラが使っていたテントに連れて行きました。こうして二人は結婚したのです。イサクは妻を心から愛し、母親を亡くした悲しみも、妻を得たことで慰められました。
1And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.24.1 well…: Heb. gone into days 2And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: 3And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: 4But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac. 5And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? 6And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.
7¶ The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence. 8And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again. 9And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter.
10¶ And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor.24.10 for: or, and 11And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.24.11 that…: Heb. that women who draw water go forth 12And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. 13Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water: 14And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
15¶ And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. 16And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.24.16 very…: Heb. good of countenance 17And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. 18And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. 19And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. 20And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels. 21And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not. 22And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;24.22 earring: or, jewel for the forehead 23And said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in? 24And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. 25She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in. 26And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD. 27And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren. 28And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother’s house these things.
29¶ And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well. 30And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. 31And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.
32¶ And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men’s feet that were with him. 33And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on. 34And he said, I am Abraham’s servant. 35And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses. 36And Sarah my master’s wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath. 37And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell: 38But thou shalt go unto my father’s house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son. 39And I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me. 40And he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father’s house: 41Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath. 42And I came this day unto the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go: 43Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink; 44And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master’s son. 45And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee. 46And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also. 47And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. 48And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son. 49And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. 50Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good. 51Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the LORD hath spoken. 52And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth. 53And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.24.53 jewels: Heb. vessels
54And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. 55And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.24.55 a few…: or, a full year, or ten months 56And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master. 57And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth. 58And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go. 59And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant, and his men. 60And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.
61¶ And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
62And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai-roi; for he dwelt in the south country. 63And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.24.63 to meditate: or, to pray 64And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. 65For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. 66And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 67And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
