逃げ出したエリヤ
1アハブ王は、エリヤがしたすべてのこと、とりわけバアルの預言者たちを皆殺しにしたことを、王妃イゼベルに話しました。 2王妃は腹立ちまぎれに、使者を送ってエリヤにこう伝えました。「よくも私の預言者たちを殺してくれた。神々にかけて言っておくけど、明日の今ごろまでに、おまえのいのちはないものと覚悟するがいい！」
3エリヤは恐怖に襲われ、逃げ出しました。ユダの町ベエル・シェバまで来ると、そこに従者を残し、 4一人で荒野へ入って行きました。彼は一日中歩き続けてくたくたになり、えにしだの木の下に座り込むと、死を願って主に祈りました。「主よ、もうたくさんです。私のいのちを取ってください。いずれ死ぬのですから。」
5そのまま木の下で横になって眠り込むと、御使いが来て彼にさわり、起きて食事をするように言いました。 6見ると、石で焼いたパンと水の入ったつぼがあります。エリヤはパンを食べ、水を飲んでから、また横になりました。 7すると、再び御使いが現れて彼にさわり、「起きて、もっと食べなさい。先はまだまだ長いのだから」と言いました。
8そこでエリヤは起きて食べ、水を飲みました。この食事で元気を取り戻したエリヤは、四十日四十夜、旅を続けて神の山ホレブ（シナイ山）に着き、 9そこにあるほら穴に入りました。すると、彼に主のことばがありました。「エリヤ、ここで何をしているのか。」
10「私は、天地の支配者である神、主のために一生懸命に働いてきました。ところが、イスラエルの民はあなたと交わした契約を破って祭壇を壊し、あなたの預言者たちを殺しました。彼らは今、一人生き残った私まで殺そうとしています。」
11すると、「外に出て、山の上でわたしの前に立ちなさい」と主のことばがありました。と、その時、主が通り過ぎ、激しい風が山を直撃し、岩が砕け落ちました。しかし、風の中に主はいませんでした。風のあとに地震が起こりましたが、そこにも主はいませんでした。 12地震のあとに火が燃えましたが、火の中にも主はいませんでした。火のあとに、ささやくような細い声が聞こえてきました。 13エリヤはそれを聞くと、顔を外套で覆い、ほら穴の入口に立ちました。すると、「エリヤ、なぜ、ここにいるのか」という声がありました。
14「私は天の軍勢の主である神様のために、骨身を惜しまず働いてきました。それなのに、人々は契約を破って祭壇を壊し、私以外のあなたの預言者を一人残らず殺しました。そして今、私まで殺そうとしています。」
15「さあ、ダマスコに通じる荒野の道へ引き返すのだ。ダマスコに着いたら、ハザエルに油を注いで、シリヤの王としなさい。 16それから、ニムシの子エフーに油を注いで、イスラエルの王としなさい。また、アベル・メホラ出身のシャファテの子エリシャに油を注いで、あなたに代わる預言者としなさい。 17ハザエルの手から逃げる者はエフーに殺され、エフーの手から逃げる者はエリシャに殺される。 18それにイスラエルには、バアルにひざをかがめず、口づけしない者が七千人いることを忘れてはならない。」
後継者エリシャ
19エリヤは出かけて行き、十二くびき（牛馬の首にかけて車を引かせる横木。一くびきは二頭）の牛で畑を耕しているエリシャを見つけました。彼は最後の十二番目のくびきのそばにいました。エリヤは彼に近寄り、自分の外套を彼の肩にかけると、また歩き去りました。 20すると、エリシャは牛をそのままにして、エリヤのあとを追いかけ、「まず、父と母に別れのあいさつをさせてください。それから、お伴をします」と言いました。「行って来なさい。なぜ、そんなに興奮しているのです」とエリヤは答えました。 21こう言われてエリシャは引き返し、耕作用の牛をほふり、鋤の柄をたきぎにして肉をあぶりました。その料理を人々にふるまって、祝宴を設けました。それからエリヤについて行って、彼に仕えました。
Elijah flees to Horeb
1Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, ‘May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.’
3Elijah was afraid19:3 Or Elijah saw and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, Lord,’ he said. ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’ 5Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.
All at once an angel touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat.’ 6He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
7The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.’ 8So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he travelled for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. 9There he went into a cave and spent the night.
The Lord appears to Elijah
And the word of the Lord came to him: ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’
10He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’
11The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’
14He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’
15The Lord said to him, ‘Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. 17Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. 18Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel – all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.’
The call of Elisha
19So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. 20Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. ‘Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,’ he said, ‘and then I will come with you.’
‘Go back,’ Elijah replied. ‘What have I done to you?’
21So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the ploughing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.
