アハブ家を打つエフー
1そのころ、エリシャは若い弟子を呼んで言いました。「この油のびんを持って、ラモテ・ギルアデに行くしたくをしなさい。 2向こうに着いたら、ニムシの子ヨシャパテの子エフーを捜しなさい。捜しあてたら、呼び出して奥の部屋に案内し、 3彼の頭に油を注ぐのだ。それから、『主はあなたに油を注いでイスラエルの王とされる』と言って、すぐさま逃げて来なさい。」
4若い預言者は、言われたとおりラモテ・ギルアデへ行き、 5ほかの将校たちと会議中のエフーを見つけました。
「将軍、申し上げることがあります」と、彼は言いました。
「だれにだ」と、エフーが言いました。
「あなたにです。」
6エフーは席を立ち、家に入りました。若い預言者はエフーの頭に油を注いで、言いました。「イスラエルの主は言われる。『わたしはあなたに油を注いで、主の民イスラエルの王とする。 7あなたはアハブの家を打たなければならない。こうして、イゼベルに殺された預言者や民のために復讐をするのだ。 8これでアハブ家の者は、奴隷に至るまで滅びうせる。 9わたしは、ネバテの子ヤロブアムの家や、アヒアの子バシャの家を滅ぼしたように、アハブの家を滅ぼす。 10イズレエルで、犬がアハブの妻イゼベルを食らうが、だれも彼女を葬らない。』」
こう言い終わると、彼は一目散に逃げ帰りました。
11エフーが仲間の将校たちのところに戻ると、一人が尋ねました。「あの気が変な男は、何をしに来たのだ。何か変わったことでもあるのか？」
「あなたがたは、あれがだれか、何を言ったか、よくわかっているはずだ」とエフーが言うと、 12「いや、私たちは知らない。教えてほしい」と彼らは答えました。そこでエフーは、その男が言ったこと、また、主が自分に油を注いでイスラエルの王としてくださったことを話しました。
13すると、彼らはすばやく上着を脱いで階段の上に敷き、ラッパを鳴らして、「エフーが王様になった！」と大声で叫びました。
14こうして、ニムシの子ヨシャパテの子エフーは、イスラエルの王ヨラムに反旗を翻したのです。一方、ヨラムはイスラエルの全軍を率い、シリヤのハザエルの軍勢に対してラモテ・ギルアデの防衛に当たっていましたが、 15傷を負ったので、イズレエルに帰って治療していました。エフーは、いっしょにいる者たちに言いました。「私が王になることを願っているなら、このことはイズレエルに知らせに行ってはならない。」
16それから、エフーは戦車に飛び乗り、病床にいるヨラム王を見つけようとイズレエルへ急行しました。その時、ユダのアハズヤ王も、ヨラム王を見舞いに来ていました。 17イズレエルのやぐらの上にいた見張りが、エフーの一隊が近づいて来るのを見て、「だれか来るぞ！」と叫びました。ヨラム王は、「騎兵一人を出して、敵か味方か調べさせよ」と命じました。 18そこで一人がエフーを迎えに行き、言いました。「王が、あなたは敵か味方かと言っておられます。和平のために来られたのですか。」エフーは、「和平が何だ。つべこべ言わず、私について来い！」と答えました。一方、見張りは王に、「使者は行ったまま戻りません」と報告しました。 19そこで王は、第二の使者を出しました。彼は馬に乗ってエフーのところに行き、彼らが友好を意図しているかどうか尋ねました。「友好が何だ。つべこべ言わず、私について来い！」
20見張りは大声を張り上げました。「第二の使者も帰って来ません。ところで、あれはエフーに違いありません。狂暴に馬を走らせています。」
21ヨラムは、「急いで、戦車の用意をせよ」と命じました。
ヨラム王とユダのアハズヤ王は、戦車に乗ってエフーを迎えに出ました。彼らがエフーに出会ったのは、ナボテの所有する畑でした。 22ヨラムは尋ねました。「エフー、友人として来たのか。」エフーは答えました。「あなたの母イゼベルの悪が私たちを取り巻いている限り、どうして友情などありえましょう。」
23ヨラムはきびすを返し、大声でアハズヤに、「裏切りだ！ 反逆だ！」と叫んで逃げました。 24エフーは力いっぱい弓を引き絞り、逃げるヨラムの両肩の間にねらいをつけました。放たれた矢はみごと心臓を射抜き、ヨラムは戦車の中にどっと倒れ、そのまま息絶えました。 25エフーは侍従のビデカルに命じました。「王の死体をナボテの畑に投げ捨てろ。いつかおまえと馬に乗って、彼の父アハブ王の供をしていた時、主のお告げがあったからだ。 26『わたしは、ナボテとその子らを殺した罪に、このナボテの地所で報復する。』だから、そのとおり、ナボテの畑に王の死体を投げ捨てるのだ。」
27その間に、ユダ王のアハズヤはベテ・ハガンの道へ逃げました。エフーはアハズヤを追いかけ、「やつも討ち取れ」と家来に命じました。エフーの軍勢は、イブレアムに近いグルの坂道で、戦車に乗ったアハズヤに矢を射かけ、重傷を負わせました。王はやっとの思いでメギドまで逃げ延びたものの、そこでついに事切れました。 28彼の家来たちは遺体を車に載せてエルサレムに運び、王室墓地に葬りました。
29アハズヤがユダの王となったのは、イスラエルの王ヨラムの第十一年のことです。
30イゼベルはエフーがイズレエルに来たと聞くと、目の縁に化粧をし、髪を結い直して、窓ぎわに座りました。 31エフーが宮殿の門を入ると、彼女は大声で呼びかけました。「あーら、人殺しのエフーじゃない！ ごきげんいかが。主君殺しのジムリ（イスラエルの王エラに謀反を起こして殺した）の子！」
32エフーがイゼベルを見上げながら、「だれか私に味方する者はいないか」と叫ぶと、二、三人の宦官が顔を出しました。 33彼が「その女を突き落とせ！」と言ったので、宦官たちはイゼベルを窓から突き落としました。回りの壁や馬はその返り血を浴びて真っ赤に染まり、彼女は馬に踏みつけられました。 34エフーは宮殿に入って食事をしてから、「あの、のろわれた女を葬ってやれ。王の娘なのだから」と言いました。 35しかし、人々が彼女の遺体を葬ろうと出て行くと、すでに頭蓋骨と両手両足しか残っていませんでした。 36-37戻った者たちの報告に、エフーはこう言いました。「まさに、主のおことばどおりになった。主は預言者エリヤにお語りになった。『犬がイゼベルの肉を食らい、その死体は肥やしのようにまき散らされ、だれにも見分けがつかなくなる。』」
Jehu anointed king of Israel
1The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company of the prophets and said to him, ‘Tuck your cloak into your belt, take this flask of olive oil with you and go to Ramoth Gilead. 2When you get there, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him, get him away from his companions and take him into an inner room. 3Then take the flask and pour the oil on his head and declare, “This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.” Then open the door and run; don’t delay!’
4So the young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead. 5When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. ‘I have a message for you, commander,’ he said.
‘For which of us?’ asked Jehu.
‘For you, commander,’ he replied.
6Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil on Jehu’s head and declared, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “I anoint you king over the Lord’s people Israel. 7You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge the blood of my servants the prophets and the blood of all the Lord’s servants shed by Jezebel. 8The whole house of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel – slave or free.9:8 Or Israel – every ruler or leader 9I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha son of Ahijah. 10As for Jezebel, dogs will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no-one will bury her.” ’ Then he opened the door and ran.
11When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, ‘Is everything all right? Why did this maniac come to you?’
‘You know the man and the sort of things he says,’ Jehu replied.
12‘That’s not true!’ they said. ‘Tell us.’
Jehu said, ‘Here is what he told me: “This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.” ’
13They quickly took their cloaks and spread them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet and shouted, ‘Jehu is king!’
Jehu kills Joram and Ahaziah
14So Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram. (Now Joram and all Israel had been defending Ramoth Gilead against Hazael king of Aram, 15but King Joram9:15 Hebrew Jehoram, a variant of Joram; also in verses 17 and 21-24 had returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him in the battle with Hazael king of Aram.) Jehu said, ‘If you desire to make me king, don’t let anyone slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel.’ 16Then he got into his chariot and rode to Jezreel, because Joram was resting there and Ahaziah king of Judah had gone down to see him.
17When the lookout standing on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu’s troops approaching, he called out, ‘I see some troops coming.’
‘Get a horseman,’ Joram ordered. ‘Send him to meet them and ask, “Do you come in peace?” ’
18The horseman rode off to meet Jehu and said, ‘This is what the king says: “Do you come in peace?” ’
‘What do you have to do with peace?’ Jehu replied. ‘Fall in behind me.’
The lookout reported, ‘The messenger has reached them, but he isn’t coming back.’
19So the king sent out a second horseman. When he came to them he said, ‘This is what the king says: “Do you come in peace?” ’
Jehu replied, ‘What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me.’
20The lookout reported, ‘He has reached them, but he isn’t coming back either. The driving is like that of Jehu son of Nimshi – he drives like a maniac.’
21‘Hitch up my chariot,’ Joram ordered. And when it was hitched up, Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah rode out, each in his own chariot, to meet Jehu. They met him at the plot of ground that had belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite. 22When Joram saw Jehu he asked, ‘Have you come in peace, Jehu?’
‘How can there be peace,’ Jehu replied, ‘as long as all the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel abound?’
23Joram turned about and fled, calling out to Ahaziah, ‘Treachery, Ahaziah!’
24Then Jehu drew his bow and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow pierced his heart and he slumped down in his chariot. 25Jehu said to Bidkar, his chariot officer, ‘Pick him up and throw him on the field that belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite. Remember how you and I were riding together in chariots behind Ahab his father when the Lord spoke this prophecy against him: 26“Yesterday I saw the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons, declares the Lord, and I will surely make you pay for it on this plot of ground, declares the Lord.”9:26 See 1 Kings 21:19. Now then, pick him up and throw him on that plot, in accordance with the word of the Lord.’
27When Ahaziah king of Judah saw what had happened, he fled up the road to Beth Haggan.9:27 Or fled by way of the garden house Jehu chased him, shouting, ‘Kill him too!’ They wounded him in his chariot on the way up to Gur near Ibleam, but he escaped to Megiddo and died there. 28His servants took him by chariot to Jerusalem and buried him with his ancestors in his tomb in the City of David. 29(In the eleventh year of Joram son of Ahab, Ahaziah had become king of Judah.)
Jezebel killed
30Then Jehu went to Jezreel. When Jezebel heard about it, she put on eye makeup, arranged her hair and looked out of a window. 31As Jehu entered the gate, she asked, ‘Have you come in peace, you Zimri, you murderer of your master?’9:31 Or ‘Was there peace for Zimri, who murdered his master?’
32He looked up at the window and called out, ‘Who is on my side? Who?’ Two or three eunuchs looked down at him. 33‘Throw her down!’ Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot.
34Jehu went in and ate and drank. ‘Take care of that cursed woman,’ he said, ‘and bury her, for she was a king’s daughter.’ 35But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands. 36They went back and told Jehu, who said, ‘This is the word of the Lord that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: on the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs will devour Jezebel’s flesh.9:36 See 1 Kings 21:23. 37Jezebel’s body will be like dung on the ground in the plot at Jezreel, so that no-one will be able to say, “This is Jezebel.” ’
