モアブとの戦い
1ユダの王ヨシャパテの第十八年に、アハブの子ヨラムがイスラエルの王となり、首都のサマリヤで十二年の間、治めました。 2彼は主の前に悪を行いましたが、両親ほどではなく、父が造ったバアルにささげる石柱だけは取り除いたのです。 3しかし一方で、イスラエルの民を偶像礼拝に導いたネバテの子ヤロブアムの罪を犯し続けました。
4モアブの王メシャは羊を飼っており、毎年イスラエルに子羊十万頭と雄羊十万頭分の羊毛とを貢ぎ物として納めていました。 5ところがアハブ王が死ぬと、モアブの王はイスラエルに背きました。 6-8そこで、ヨラム王はイスラエル軍を召集する一方、ユダのヨシャパテ王に使いを送って言いました。「モアブの王が反旗を翻したので、戦いにお力添え願えないか。」
「喜んで力になろう。私の民も馬も、あなたの言うとおりにさせる。作戦計画を教えてほしい。」
「エドムの荒野の道から攻めることにしている。」
9こうして、エドムからの援軍も加わった、イスラエルとユダの連合軍は、荒野の道を七日間回り道したため、兵士や彼らの荷を運ぶ家畜の飲み水が底をついてしまいました。 10イスラエルの王は悲鳴を上げました。「ああ、どうしよう。主はわれわれを、モアブの王の餌食にしようと、ここに連れ出されたのだ。」
11「預言者はいないのですか。もしいたら、どうすればいいかわかるのに。」
ユダの王ヨシャパテのことばに、イスラエルの王の家臣が答えました。「エリヤの助手をしていたエリシャがいます。」
12ヨシャパテは、「それはいい。その者に聞いてみよう」と言いました。そこで、イスラエルとユダとエドムの王は、そろってエリシャを訪ねました。
13エリシャはイスラエルの王ヨラムに言いました。「あなたとはかかわりになりたくありません。ご両親がひいきにしていた偽預言者のもとに行ったらいいでしょう。」
すると、ヨラム王は言いました。「いや、われわれをここに呼び出し、モアブの王の餌食になるように仕向けたのは主なのだ。」
14エリシャは言いました。「主にかけて言っておきます。ユダのヨシャパテ王がいなかったら、こんなことに首をつっ込む気はさらさらなかったのですが、 15しかたがない。竪琴を弾く者を連れて来てください。」竪琴が奏でられると、エリシャに主のことばが下りました。 16「この乾いた谷に溝を掘りなさい。わたしがそこに水を満たす。 17風も吹かず雨も降らないのに、谷は水であふれ、あなたがたも家畜も十分に飲むことができる。 18しかし、これはまだ手始めにすぎず、わたしはモアブ軍を破り、あなたがたに勝利を与える。 19あなたがたは城壁に囲まれた最上の町々を占領し、すべての肥沃な耕地を石で荒地にする。」
20翌日、朝のいけにえがささげられるころ、水がエドムの方から流れて来て、あたり一面を満たしました。
21そのころモアブ人は、連合軍が攻めて来ると聞き、老いも若きも、戦うことのできる男子を総動員して国境の守備を固めました。 22ところが翌朝早く起きてみると、太陽が水面を真っ赤に照らしているではありませんか。 23彼らは、「血だ！ 連合軍が同士討ちをしたに違いない。さあ、出て行って戦利品を集めよう」と言いました。
24こうして、彼らがイスラエル陣に突入すると、イスラエル軍が飛び出して来てモアブ軍を片っぱしから打ち始めました。たちまちモアブ軍は総くずれとなり、ここぞとばかり、イスラエル軍はモアブの地に攻め込み、手あたりしだいに町々を破壊し、 25すべての肥沃な地に石を投げ、井戸をふさぎ、実のなる木を切り倒しました。キル・ハレセテの要害が最後まで残っていましたが、そこもついにイスラエル軍の手に落ちました。
26モアブの王は勝ち目がないとわかると、七百人の剣客を率いて、エドムの王のところに突入しようとしましたが、それも失敗に終わりました。 27そこで、世継ぎの長男を城壁の上で殺し、いけにえとしてささげました。これを見たイスラエル人は狼狽し、自分の国へ引き揚げて行きました。
1Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years. 2And he wrought evil in the sight of the LORD; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made.3.2 image: Heb. statue 3Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.
4¶ And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool. 5But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
6¶ And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel. 7And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses. 8And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom. 9So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days’ journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.3.9 that…: Heb. at their feet 10And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab! 11But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah. 12And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the LORD is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him. 13And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab. 14And Elisha said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee. 15But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him. 16And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Make this valley full of ditches. 17For thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts. 18And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand. 19And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.3.19 mar: Heb. grieve
20And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.

26¶ And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not. 27Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
