ユダから来た神の預言者
1ヤロブアムが香をたこうと祭壇に近づいた時、一人の神の預言者がユダからやって来ました。 2その預言者は主の命令に従って、声を張り上げて叫びました。「祭壇よ、主のことばを聞け。ダビデの家に、やがてヨシヤという子が生まれる。彼は、ここに香をたきに来る祭司たちをおまえの上に載せ、いけにえとしてささげる。人々の骨がおまえの上で焼かれる。」
3預言者は、それが主のことばだという証拠に、「祭壇は裂け、灰が地にこぼれ落ちる」と言いました。 4王は真っ赤になって怒り、護衛兵に、「この男を捕まえろ！」と大声で命じ、こぶしを振り上げました。そのとたん、王の手は麻痺して動かなくなり、 5同時に祭壇に大きな裂け目ができ、灰がこぼれ出ました。確かに主のことばどおりになったのです。 6王は預言者に、「どうか、おまえの神、主にお願いして、私の手を元どおりにしてくれ」と哀願しました。預言者が祈ると、王の手は元どおりになりました。 7すると、王は預言者に、「宮殿に来て、しばらく休んではどうか。食事を用意しよう。手を治してもらった礼もしたい」と言いました。 8預言者は答えました。「たとえ宮殿の半分を下さると言われましても、まいりません。また、ここではパンも水も頂きません。 9主が、『何も食べてはならない。水を飲んでもならない。また、もと来た道を通ってユダに帰ってはならない』と、きびしく言われたからです。」
10それで彼は、ベテルに来た時とは別の道を通って帰って行きました。
11ところで、ベテルに一人の老預言者が住んでいました。彼の息子たちが家に来て、ユダの預言者のしたこと、ヤロブアム王に語ったことを父に話しました。 12老預言者は、「その方はどの道を通って帰ったのか」と尋ね、道を聞きました。 13それから、「さあ、早くろばに鞍をつけてくれ」と言い、息子たちが言われたとおりにすると、 14彼はろばに乗って例の預言者のあとを追い、ついに、その人が樫の木の下に座っているのを見つけました。
「もしや、あなたはユダからおいでの預言者ではありませんか？」
「はい、そうですが。」
15「どうか、私の家においでください。いっしょに食事でもなさいませんか。」
16-17「せっかくですが、お断りします。ベテルで食べたり飲んだりすることは、いっさい禁じられています。主に、そうしてはならない、ときびしく言い渡されているのです。また、もと来た道を通って帰ってはならない、とも命じられています。」
18「実は、私もあなたと同じ預言者です。御使いが主のお告げを知らせてくれたのです。あなたを家にお連れし、食事と水を差し上げるようにとのことでした。」
こうして、彼はその人をだましました。 19預言者は彼の家に行き、そこで食事をし、水を飲んだのです。
20二人が食卓についていた時、突然、老預言者に主のことばが臨み、 21-22彼はユダの預言者に大声で言いました。「主は言われる！ あなたは命令に背いて、ここへ引き返し、パンを食べ、水を飲んだ。あなたの死体は先祖の墓には葬られない。」
23食事がすむと、老預言者はその預言者のろばに鞍をつけたので、 24-25預言者は再び出発しました。しかしその帰途、一頭のライオンに遭遇し、かみ殺されたのです。死体は路上に転がったままで、そばにはろばとライオンが立っていました。そこを通りかかった人々は、そのことをベテルの町に行って話しました。
26話を聞いた老預言者は、「それは主の命令に背いた預言者だ。ライオンに殺され、主の警告どおりになったのだ」と言いました。 27それから、息子たちに、自分のろばに鞍をつけさせました。
28行ってみると路上には預言者の死体が転がっており、まだ、そばにライオンが立っていました。不思議なことに、ライオンは死体を食べもせず、ろばを襲ってもいませんでした。 29そこで老預言者は、死体をろばに載せて自分の町に運び、懇ろに葬りました。 30彼は遺体を自分の墓に納め、みんなでその人のために「ああ、わが兄弟！」と言って悼みました。 31そののち、彼は息子たちに言い残しました。「私が死んだら、あの預言者のそばに埋めてくれ。 32主があの人に、ベテルの祭壇に向かって叫ばせたのだ。あの人がサマリヤの町の礼拝所に向かってのろったことばは、必ずそのとおりになる。」
33しかし、預言者の警告にもかかわらず、ヤロブアム王は悪の道から離れませんでした。それどころか、礼拝所に祭られた偶像にいけにえをささげるため、これまで以上に大ぜいの祭司を一般市民から募集したのです。そのため、だれでも祭司になることができました。 34これは大きな罪だったので、やがてヤロブアムの王国は滅び、その一族は根絶やしにされることになりました。
1And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Beth-el: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.13.1 burn: or, offer 2And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee. 3And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out. 4And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Beth-el, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him. 5The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD. 6And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.13.6 the LORD, and: Heb. the face of the LORD, etc 7And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. 8And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place: 9For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest. 10So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Beth-el.
11¶ Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father. 12And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah. 13And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon, 14And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am. 15Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. 16And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place: 17For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.13.17 it…: Heb. a word was 18He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. 19So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.
20¶ And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back: 21And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee, 22But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.
23¶ And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase. 25And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt. 26And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.13.26 torn: Heb. broken 27And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him. 28And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.13.28 torn: Heb. broken 29And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him. 30And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother! 31And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones: 32For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.
33¶ After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.13.33 made…: Heb. returned and made13.33 consecrated…: Heb. filled his hand 34And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
