初子をささげる規定・種なしパンの祭りの規定
1-2主はモーセに告げました。「イスラエル人の長男と家畜の初子とはみな、わたしにささげなさい。それはわたしのものだから。」
3モーセは人々に言いました。「この日こそ、永遠に記念すべき日、エジプトの奴隷の鎖から解放された日だ。主がすばらしい奇跡を起こして救い出してくださったのを、忘れないようにしよう。だから、毎年この出来事を記念する日には、パン種を使ってはならない。 4-5毎年、一月半ば（太陽暦の三月末）のこの日を、エジプト脱出の記念日としよう。今日から主があなたがたをカナン人、ヘテ人、エモリ人、ヒビ人、エブス人の国、つまり先祖たちに約束された乳とみつの流れる国へ導いてくださるのだ。 6-7七日間は、種なしパンしか食べてはならない。イスラエルの領土ではどこでも、家の中にパン種も、パン種が入ったパンもあってはならない。七日目は主のための祭りを行う。 8毎年その祭りのたびに、子どもたちに祭りの意味を説明しなさい。これはエジプトを脱出する時、主がどんなにすばらしいことをしてくださったかを記念する祭りだからである。 9毎年この一週間を記念することによって、自分たちが特別な民であることを心に刻もう。われわれが主のものだというしるしに、民の手や額に焼き印を押すようなものである。 10この祝祭は、毎年定められた時に行わなければならない。
11主がずっと昔に先祖たちに約束された地、今カナン人が住んでいる地に導いてくださった時には、 12どの家の長男も、どの家畜の初子も、それが雄であればみな主にささげなさい。それらは主のものだということを忘れてはならない。 13ただし、ろばの初子の場合は身代わりに子羊や子やぎをささげることができる。そうしない場合はろばは殺す。しかし人間の場合、長男の身代わりをささげて、必ず買い戻さなければならない。 14子どもたちが将来、『これはどういう意味ですか』と聞いてきたら、こう教えなさい。『主がすばらしい奇跡を行って、私たちを奴隷生活から救い出してくださったのだよ。 15エジプトの王はなかなか行かせてくれなかった。それで主は、エジプト中の家の長男と家畜の初子をみな殺した。だから私たちもこうして、最初の男の子は家畜も含めて、すべていけにえとして主にささげるのだ。ただ人間の場合はいけにえにするわけにいかないので、必ず身代わりのいけにえをささげて、長男を買い戻すのだよ。』
16もう一度言おう。この祭りを守ることによって、あなたがたが主の民であることがはっきりする。神の焼き印が額に押されるのと全く同じことである。祭りを守ることによって、主の偉大な力でエジプトから救い出された出来事を、毎年新たに思い起こすのだ。」
雲の柱、火の柱
17-18このようにしてついに、エジプトの王ファラオはイスラエル人を行かせることになりました。
さて、エジプトから約束の地へ行くには、ペリシテ人の地を通るのが最も近道でしたが、神は別の道を通るようにしました。人々はエジプトを出る時、一応は武装していましたが、道中ずっとペリシテ人と戦うのはつらいことです。みな勇気を失って、またエジプトへ帰ってしまうかもしれません。そこで神は、紅海を通る荒野の道へ行かせたのです。
19モーセはヨセフの遺骨を持って出ました。神の御力によってエジプトから救い出される時には必ず持って行くようにと、ヨセフが神の前で、イスラエル（ヤコブ）の子たちに約束させたからです。この日がくることを、ヨセフは確信していたのです。
20一行はスコテを出たあと、荒野のはずれにあるエタムに野営しました。 21神が昼間は雲の柱、夜は火の柱を立て、進む道をはっきり示してくれたので、彼らは昼も夜も旅を続けることができました。 22雲の柱と火の柱は、その後もずっと、見えなくなることはありませんでした。
Consecration of the firstborn
1The Lord said to Moses, 2‘Consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.’
3Then Moses said to the people, ‘Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand. Eat nothing containing yeast. 4Today, in the month of Aviv, you are leaving. 5When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites – the land he swore to your ancestors to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey – you are to observe this ceremony in this month: 6for seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival to the Lord. 7Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders. 8On that day tell your son, “I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.” 9This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand. 10You must keep this ordinance at the appointed time year after year.
11‘After the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites and gives it to you, as he promised on oath to you and your ancestors, 12you are to give over to the Lord the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the Lord. 13Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem every firstborn among your sons.
14‘In days to come when your son asks you, “What does this mean?” say to him, “With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.” 16And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.’
Crossing the sea
17When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, ‘If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.’ 18So God led the people around by the desert road towards the Red Sea.13:18 Or the Sea of Reeds The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.
19Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, ‘God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.’13:19 See Gen. 50:25.
20After leaving Sukkoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert. 21By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.
