1大祭司はステパノに、「この訴えのとおりか」と問いただしました。
2ステパノは、答弁を始めました。「お聞きください、皆さん。先祖アブラハムがまだメソポタミヤに住んでいたころ、栄光に輝く神様が彼に現れました。 3そして、故郷を離れ、親族とも別れて、神様の命じる国へ行くように、とおっしゃいました。 4そこでアブラハムはカルデヤ人の地を離れ、シリヤのハランに移り、父親が死ぬまでそこに住みました。そのあと神様は、彼をこの地に連れて来られたのです。 5ところがそこには、彼の土地はたったの一坪もなく、その上、子どももいませんでした。にもかかわらず、神様は、やがてこの地が全部、アブラハムとその子孫のものになると約束されたのです。 6同時に、子孫たちがこの地を去って外国に住み、四百年のあいだ奴隷になるとも言われました。 7ただ、『わたしは、彼らを奴隷とした国民を必ず罰する。その後、あなたの子孫はこの地に戻り、ここでわたしを礼拝するようになる』（創世15・13-14）との約束を添えて……。
8神様はまた、その時、割礼の儀式（男子が生まれて八日目に、その性器の包皮を切り取る儀式）を定め、それを神とアブラハムの子孫との契約の証拠となさいました。それで、アブラハムの息子イサクは、生後八日目に割礼を受けたのです。このイサクの息子がヤコブで、ヤコブからユダヤ民族の十二部族の長が生まれました。 9その一人ヨセフは、ほかの兄弟たちのねたみを買い、エジプトに奴隷として売られました。しかし神様は、ヨセフと共にいて、 10あらゆる苦境から彼を救い出し、エジプトの王パロの前で彼に恵みを与えられたのです。神様がヨセフにすばらしい知恵を与えたので、パロはヨセフを、エジプト全土を治める大臣に取り立て、宮中の管理もいっさい任せました。
11やがてエジプトとカナンの全土に大ききんが起こり、先祖たちは、たいへんな苦境に陥りました。食料がなくなったのです。 12話に聞くと、エジプトにはまだ穀物があるそうです。ヤコブはさっそく息子たちを差し向けて、食料を買わせました。 13彼らが二度目に買いに来た時、ヨセフは自分のことを兄弟たちに打ち明け、パロもヨセフの家族のことを知りました。それで、 14ヨセフは人を遣わして、父ヤコブと兄弟たちの一族、総勢七十五人をエジプトに招きました。 15こうして、ヤコブと息子たちはエジプトに住み、そこで死にました。 16遺体はみなシケムに持ち帰られ、アブラハムがシケムのハモルの子から買った墓地に葬られました。
17神様がアブラハムに立てた、彼の子孫を奴隷から解放するという約束の時が近づくにつれ、ユダヤ人の人口は、エジプトでどんどんふくれ上がっていきました。 18そのうち、ヨセフのことを知らない王が即位し、 19ユダヤ人に悪巧みをはかり、親たちに子どもを捨てさせたのです。
20モーセが生まれたのは、ちょうどこのような時でした。彼は神の目にかなった、かわいらしい子どもでした。両親は、三か月の間、家の中に隠しておきましたが、 21とうとう隠しきれなくなり、しかたなく捨てることにしました。ところが、エジプト王パロの娘がその子を見つけ、養子として育てることになったのです。 22こうして、モーセはエジプトの最高の教育を受け、たくましく、雄弁な王子に成長しました。
23四十歳の誕生日が近づいたある日、モーセは、同胞のイスラエル人のところへ行ってみよう、と思い立ちました。 24ところが、行ってみると、どうでしょう。一人のエジプト人が、イスラエル人を虐待しているではありませんか。モーセはイスラエル人をかばおうとの一心から、相手のエジプト人を殺してしまいました。 25モーセは、イスラエル人を助けるために神が自分を遣わされていることを、みなが認めてくれるものと思い込んでいましたが、現実はそうではありませんでした。
26翌日、もう一度出かけて行くと、今度はイスラエル人同士で争っているのにぶつかりました。モーセは間に割って入り、『兄弟同士じゃないか。けんかなんかやめなさい』と押しとどめました。
27すると、相手を痛めつけていたほうの男がモーセを押しのけて言いました。『だれがあんたを、おれたちの支配者や裁判官にしたんだ。 28昨日、あのエジプト人を殺したみたいに、おれまでも殺そうとするのか。』
29これを聞いて、モーセはまずいことになったと、エジプトを逃げ出し、ミデアンの地に身を寄せました。そこで、二人の子どもをもうけたのです。
30それから四十年の歳月が流れました。ある日のことです。シナイ山に近い荒野で、モーセの前に天使が柴の燃える炎の中に現れました。 31彼はその光景に驚き、何事かと近寄ってみると、主の声が聞こえてきました。 32『わたしはあなたの先祖、アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの神である。』モーセはすっかり震え上がり、顔を上げる勇気もありませんでした。
33主は続けて語られました。『くつを脱ぎなさい。あなたの立っている所は聖なる地だから。 34わたしは、エジプトで苦しめられているわたしの民の姿を見、またその叫びを聞いた。わたしは彼らを救い出そうと下って来たのだ。行け。わたしが、あなたをエジプトに遣わす。』 35こうして神様は、『だれがあなたを、おれたちの支配者や裁判官にしたのか』とユダヤ人たちに退けられたモーセを、もう一度、エジプトに帰らせたのです。モーセは初めて、イスラエル人の支配者、また解放者となったのです。 36モーセは、数々の驚くべき奇跡によって、人々をエジプトから連れ出し、紅海を横断して、四十年にわたる荒野での生活を導きました。
37このモーセが、『神様はあなたがたの中から、私のような預言者をお立てになる』と、イスラエルの人々に宣言したのです。 38モーセは荒野では、神と人との仲介者でした。すなわち、シナイ山で、神のいのちのことばを天使から受け、それをイスラエルの人々に与える役を果たしたのです。
39しかし私の先祖たちは、モーセの言うことに従おうとせず、しきりにエジプトに帰りたがりました。 40そしてアロンに、『私たちをエジプトに連れ帰ってくれる神々の像を造ってください。私たちをエジプトから連れ出したモーセは、どうなったかわからないから』と迫りました。 41彼らは子牛の像を造って、供え物をささげ、自分たちが造った物で楽しんでいました。
42-43このため、神様は彼らに背を向け、彼らが日や月や星を神と思って仕えるのを放っておかれました。神である主は、預言者アモスの書の中で、こう語っておられます。
『イスラエルよ。あなたがたは
四十年の荒野の生活で、
わたしに、いけにえをささげたことがあるか。
いや、あなたがたのほんとうの関心は、
異教徒の偶像にあったのだ。
モロクの神や星の神ロンパ、
そのほか自分たちで造った偶像に。
だから、わたしはあなたがたを、
バビロンのかなたへ捕らわれの身とする。』（アモス5・25-27）
44荒野の旅で、先祖たちは、神殿の代わりに持ち運びのできる幕屋を携えていました。その中には、神様が下さった十戒を彫った、石の板が二枚ありました。この幕屋は、神様がモーセに指示なさったとおり、寸分の狂いもなく造ってありました。 45先祖たちは代々、この幕屋を受け継ぎ、ヨシュアの指揮のもとに外国と戦って得た新しい領土に運び込み、ダビデ王の時代までありました。
46さて、神様はダビデ王をたいへん祝福なさいました。ダビデ王は、ヤコブの神のために永久に残る神殿を建てさせてくださいと熱心に願いましたが、 47実際に建てたのは、息子のソロモン王でした。 48-50しかし神様は、人間が造った神殿にはお住みにならないのです。主は預言者の口を通して、次のように語っておられます。
『主は言われる。
天はわたしの王座、
地はわたしの足台。
いったいどのような家を
わたしのために建てようというのか。
わたしが、そのような所にとどまるだろうか。
わたしが、天と地とを造ったのではないか。』（イザヤ66・1-2）
51あなたがたはほんとうに強情な異教徒です。いつまで聖霊にそむき続けるのですか、かつての先祖たちのように。 52あなたがたの先祖が迫害しなかった預言者の名をあげることができたら、一人でもいいから言ってごらんなさい。もっとも、先祖たちは、正しい方がおいでになると預言した人たちを殺したのですが、あなたがたは、当のメシヤ（救い主）を裏切り、殺したのです。 53あなたがたは、天使たちを通して受けた律法を破ったのです。」
ステパノの死
54この告発に、ユダヤ人の指導者たちの怒りは爆発しました。彼らは歯ぎしりしてくやしがりました。 55しかし、ステパノは聖霊に満たされ、ぐっと頭をもたげて天を見上げました。その目には、神の栄光と神の右に立っておられるイエスの姿が見えました。 56「ごらんなさい。天が開けて、メシヤであるイエス様が、神の右に立っておられます。」
57しかし、そのとき人々は耳をおおい、割れんばかりの大声をあげ、ステパノ目がけて殺到したので、彼の声はほとんど聞き取れないほどでした。 58人々はステパノを石で打ち殺そうと、町の外に引きずり出しました。証人たち〔死刑執行人たち〕は上着を脱ぎ、パウロという青年の足もとに置きました。
59石が雨あられと飛んで来る中で、ステパノは祈りました。「主イエスよ。私の霊を迎え入れてください。」 60そして、ひざまずき、「主よ。どうぞこの罪の責任を、この人たちに負わせないでください！」と大声で叫んだかと思うと、ついに息絶えました。
Stephen’s speech to the Sanhedrin
1Then the high priest asked Stephen, ‘Are these charges true?’
2To this he replied: ‘Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran. 3“Leave your country and your people,” God said, “and go to the land I will show you.”7:3 Gen. 12:1
4‘So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living. 5He gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child. 6God spoke to him in this way: “For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and ill-treated. 7But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,” God said, “and afterwards they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.”7:7 Gen. 15:13,14 8Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth. Later Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.
9‘Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him 10and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.
11‘Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food. 12When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our forefathers on their first visit. 13On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was, and Pharaoh learned about Joseph’s family. 14After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family, seventy-five in all. 15Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our ancestors died. 16Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money.
17‘As the time drew near for God to fulfil his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt had greatly increased. 18Then “a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt”.7:18 Exodus 1:8 19He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.
20‘At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child.7:20 Or was fair in the sight of God For three months he was cared for by his family. 21When he was placed outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son. 22Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.
23‘When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites. 24He saw one of them being ill-treated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defence and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. 25Moses thought that his own people would realise that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. 26The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, “Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?”
27‘But the man who was ill-treating the other pushed Moses aside and said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? 28Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?”7:28 Exodus 2:14 29When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.
30‘After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say: 32“I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”7:32 Exodus 3:6 Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.
33‘Then the Lord said to him, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.”7:34 Exodus 3:5,7,8,10
35‘This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, “Who made you ruler and judge?” He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36He led them out of Egypt and performed wonders and signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the wilderness.
37‘This is the Moses who told the Israelites, “God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.”7:37 Deut. 18:15 38He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors; and he received living words to pass on to us.
39‘But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt. 40They told Aaron, “Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt – we don’t know what has happened to him!”7:40 Exodus 32:1 41That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and revelled in what their own hands had made. 42But God turned away from them and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars. This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:
‘ “Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
for forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
43You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek
and the star of your god Rephan,
the idols you made to worship.
Therefore I will send you into exile”7:43 Amos 5:25-27 (see Septuagint) beyond Babylon.
44‘Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen. 45After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them. It remained in the land until the time of David, 46who enjoyed God’s favour and asked that he might provide a dwelling-place for the God of Jacob.7:46 Some early manuscripts the house of Jacob 47But it was Solomon who built a house for him.
48‘However, the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says:
49‘ “Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
What kind of house will you build for me?
says the Lord.
Or where will my resting-place be?
50Has not my hand made all these things?”7:50 Isaiah 66:1,2
51‘You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: you always resist the Holy Spirit! 52Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him – 53you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.’
The stoning of Stephen
54When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. 55But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56‘Look,’ he said, ‘I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’
57At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.
59While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ 60Then he fell on his knees and cried out, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this, he fell asleep.
