パウロ、第一回伝道旅行へ
1アンテオケの教会の預言者や教師たちの中には、次の人たちがいました。バルナバ、シメオン〔別名「黒い人」〕、ルキオ〔クレネ出身〕、マナエン〔ヘロデ王とは乳兄弟〕、それにパウロなどです。 2ある日、彼らが礼拝をささげ、断食していると、聖霊が、「バルナバとパウロに、わたしの特別な仕事をさせなさい」と言われました。 3それで彼らは、さらに断食して祈ったあと、二人に手を置いて任命し、送り出しました。
4二人は聖霊に導かれてセルキヤに行き、そこから、船でキプロス島に向かいました。 5その島のサラミスという町に着くと、さっそくユダヤ人の会堂で神のことばを語り始めました。マルコも、助手として同行しました。 6-7そのあと、町から町へと島中を巡り歩いて教えを語り、最後にパポスという町に来ました。そこで、偽預言者でバルイエスと名乗る魔術師に出会いました。彼は総督のセルギオ・パウロの取り巻きの一人でした。総督自身は物事に明るい、たいへん理解のある人で、かねがね神の教えを聞きたいと思っていたので、バルナバとパウロとを招きました。 8ところが、バルイエスは二人に強く反対しました。パウロやバルナバのことばに耳を傾けないようにそそのかし、何としても、総督に主を信じさせまいとしました。
9しかし、パウロは聖霊に満たされ、魔術師をきっとにらみつけ、 10「悪魔の子、ぺてん師め！ おまえのように悪事にたけた者は、正義の敵だ。どこまで主に反抗するつもりか。 11さあ、神のさばきを受けるがいい。おまえはしばらくのあいだ目が見えなくなり、日の光が見えなくなる」と言いました。するとたちまち、かすみと闇が彼をおおったので、彼は、「だれか手を引いてくれ」と叫びながら、手さぐりで歩き回りました。 12この出来事を目のあたりにした総督は、神を信じ、改めて神の教えに驚嘆しました。
小アジヤでの伝道
13さて、パウロの一行は小アジヤに向かうため、船でパポスを発ち、ペルガの港に上陸しました。ここまで来たところで、マルコは一行から離れ、一人でエルサレムに帰ってしまいました。 14しかしバルナバとパウロは、ピシデヤ地方の町、アンテオケに向かいました。安息日（神の定めた休息日）になり、二人は礼拝をするために会堂へ出かけました。 15いつものとおり、モーセの書と預言者の書からの朗読がすむと、会堂の管理者たちが彼らに言いました。「二人の方。よろしければ、何かお話ししていただけますか。」
16そこでパウロが立ち上がり、会衆にあいさつしてから話し始めました。「イスラエルの人たち、ならびにここにおられる、神を敬う皆さん、お聞きください。まず、私たちの国の歴史からお話ししましょう。
17イスラエルの神様は、私たちの先祖をお選びになりました。そして、エジプトで奴隷にされた彼らを、目をみはるような方法で救い出し、名誉を回復してくださったのです。 18彼らが荒野をさまよい歩いた四十年の間も、ずっと養い続けてくださいました。 19-20また、カナンの七つの民族を滅ぼし、その土地を相続財産として分配なさいました。こうなるまでに約四百五十年もかかりました。そのあとは、預言者サムエルが現れるまで、さばき人が国の秩序を保っていたのです。
21やがて人々は、王がほしいと言いだしました。そこで神様は、ベニヤミン族のキスの息子サウロを王とし、四十年間、国を治めさせました。 22しかし、そのサウロも神に退けられ、代わりにダビデが王になりました。このダビデのことを神様は、『エッサイの息子ダビデこそ、わたしの心にかなう者、わたしの意思に完全に従う者だ』と言われました。 23このダビデ王の子孫から、約束どおり、イスラエルの救い主イエスを起こしてくださったのです。
24この方がおいでになる前にバプテスマのヨハネが、イスラエルの全国民が罪を捨て、神に立ち返らなければならないと教えました。 25そのヨハネが、働きを終える時、こう言ったのです。『あなたがたは、私をだれだと思っているのか。私はメシヤ（救い主）ではない。ほんとうのメシヤはまもなくおいでになる。この方に比べれば、私など全く取るに足りない者だ。』
26アブラハムの子孫の方々、ならびに、神を敬う外国人の皆さん。この救いは、私たちみんなのものです。 27エルサレムにいるユダヤ人とその指導者たちは、イエスを処刑することで、皮肉にも、預言を実現させたのです。彼らは安息日ごとに預言者のことばが読まれるのを聞きながら、イエスこそ、その預言されたお方であることを認めようとしませんでした。 28そして、罰せられる正当な理由は何一つなかったのに、どうしても死刑にするようピラトに要求したのです。 29こうして、預言どおりにイエスは死なれたのです。そのあと、イエスの遺体は十字架から降ろされ、墓に葬られました。
30しかし神様は、このイエスを復活させてくださったのです。 31イエスは幾日もの間、ガリラヤからエルサレムまでずっと行動を共にした人たちに、たびたび姿を現されました。復活のイエスにお会いした人たちは、人々にこのことを証言し続けてきたのです。
32-33バルナバと私もまた、この喜びの知らせを伝えようと、こうしてやって来ました。その知らせとは、神様がイエスを復活させたことによって、私たちの先祖への約束が今の時代に実現したということです。聖書の詩篇に、『今日、わたしはあなたに、子としての名誉を与えた』とあるとおりです。
34神様はイエスを復活させ、二度と死なない方となさいました。聖書に、『わたしはダビデに約束したすばらしい祝福を、あなたがたに与える』とあるとおりです。 35またほかの箇所では、もっとはっきり言われています。『神は、ご自分の聖なる方が朽ち果てるのをお許しにならない。』 36これは、ダビデのことではありません。ダビデは神の意思に忠実に仕える人生を送り、死んで葬られ、その体は朽ち果てたのです。 37しかし神が復活させた方は、墓の中で朽ちませんでした。
38聞いてください、皆さん！ このイエスこそ、皆さんの罪を赦してくださるのです。 39イエスを信じる人はみな、すべての罪から解放され、正しい者と宣言されるのです。これは、モーセの律法ではどうしてもできないことでした。 40くれぐれも注意してください。預言者たちの次のことばが、皆さんに的中しないように。
41『見よ。
真理を見下す者どもよ、滅べ。
おまえたちの時代に、一つのことをなそう。
どんなに説明しても、
とうてい信じられないことを。』」（ハバクク1・5）
42その日、二人が会堂から出る時、人々は、次の週もまた話してほしいと頼みました。 43礼拝が終わってからも多くのユダヤ人や熱心な外国人改宗者が、パウロとバルナバについて来ました。二人はその人たちに、神の恵みを受けるようにと教えました。 44次の週の礼拝には、町中の人がこぞって詰めかけ、二人が神のことばを話すのを聞こうとしました。
45しかしユダヤ人の指導者たちは、この群衆を見てねたみに駆られ、口ぎたなくののしり、ことごとくパウロに反対しました。
46そこでパウロとバルナバは、はっきり言いました。「この神のことばは、まずあなたがたユダヤ人に伝えられるはずだった。だが、あなたがたはそれを突っぱね、永遠のいのちを受けるにふさわしくない者であることを、自分から証明したのだ。これからは、このすばらしい知らせは、外国人に伝えよう。 47主が、『わたしはあなたを外国人の光とした。地の果てからも、人々を救いに導くためである』と命じておられるから。」
48これを聞いた外国人たちは歓喜し、パウロの話に耳を傾けました。そして永遠のいのちを求める人はみな、信仰に入りました。 49こうして神のことばは、この地方全体に広まったのです。
50しかし、ユダヤ人の指導者たちも、おとなしく引き下がってはいません。熱心な婦人たちや町の有力者たちをそそのかし、パウロとバルナバを迫害したあげく、とうとう町から追い出してしまいました。 51二人は、その町と縁を切るしるしに、足のちりを払い落とし、イコニオムへ向かいました。 52一方、主を信じた人たちは聖霊に満たされ、喜びにあふれていました。
1Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ 3So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
On Cyprus
4The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. 5When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper.
6They travelled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus, 7who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 8But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. 9Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, 10‘You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? 11Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.’
Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.
In Pisidian Antioch
13From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem. 14From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down. 15After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, ‘Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.’
16Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: ‘Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country; 18for about forty years he endured their conduct13:18 Some manuscripts he cared for them in the wilderness; 19and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan, giving their land to his people as their inheritance. 20All this took about 450 years.
‘After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. 21Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled for forty years. 22After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: “I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.”
23‘From this man’s descendants God has brought to Israel the Saviour Jesus, as he promised. 24Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel. 25As John was completing his work, he said: “Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for. But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
26‘Fellow children of Abraham and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. 27The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognise Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. 28Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb. 30But God raised him from the dead, 31and for many days he was seen by those who had travelled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.
32‘We tell you the good news: what God promised our ancestors 33he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm:
‘ “You are my son;
today I have become your father.”13:33 Psalm 2:7
34God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,
‘ “I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.”13:34 Isaiah 55:3
35So it is also stated elsewhere:
‘ “You will not let your holy one see decay.”13:35 Psalm 16:10 (see Septuagint)
36‘Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed. 37But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.
38‘Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses. 40Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:
41‘ “Look, you scoffers,
wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
that you would never believe,
even if someone told you.”13:41 Hab. 1:5’
42As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.
44On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on him.
46Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: ‘We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. 47For this is what the Lord has commanded us:
‘ “I have made you13:47 The Greek is singular. a light for the Gentiles,
that you13:47 The Greek is singular. may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.”13:47 Isaiah 49:6’
48When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honoured the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.
49The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. 50But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. 51So they shook the dust off their feet as a warning to them and went to Iconium. 52And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
