バプテスマのヨハネ、活動を始める
1-2ローマ皇帝テベリオの治世の十五年目に、神は、荒野に住むザカリヤの子ヨハネにお語りになりました。〔当時、ポンテオ・ピラトがローマから遣わされた全ユダヤの総督で、ヘロデはガリラヤ、その兄弟ピリポがイツリヤとテラコニテ、ルサニヤがアビレネを治めていました。大祭司はアンナスとカヤパでした。〕
3ヨハネはヨルダン川周辺をくまなく歩き、罪が赦されるために、今までの生活を悔い改めて、神に立ち返ったことを表明するバプテスマ（洗礼）を受けるようにと、教えを説き始めました。
4預言者イザヤの書にあるとおりです。
「荒野から叫ぶ声が聞こえる。
『主の道を準備せよ。
主が通られる道をまっすぐにせよ。
5山はけずられ、
谷は埋められ、
曲がった所はまっすぐにされ、
でこぼこ道は平らにされる。
6こうして、すべての人が
神から遣わされた救い主を見るのだ。』」（イザヤ40・3-5）
7バプテスマを受けに来る人たちに、ヨハネはきびしい口調で話しました。「まむしの子ら！ あなたがたは神に立ち返ろうともせず、ただ地獄から逃れたい一心でバプテスマを受けようとしている。 8その前に、悔い改めたことを行いで示しなさい。アブラハムの子孫だから大丈夫などと思ってはいけない。そんなものは何の役にも立たない。神はこの石ころからでも、今すぐアブラハムの子孫をお造りになれるのだ。 9今の今でも、神のさばきの斧はふりかぶられ、あなたがたを根もとから切り倒そうと待ちかまえている。だから、良い実を結ばない木はすぐにも切り倒され、火に投げ込まれるのだ。」
10「では、いったいどうすればいいのですか。」 11こう尋ねる群衆に、ヨハネは答えました。「下着を二枚持っていたら、一枚は貧しい人に与えなさい。余分な食べ物があるなら、お腹をすかせている人に与えなさい。」
12取税人たち（ローマに納める税金をあくどいやり方で取り立て、人々からきらわれていた）までもが、バプテスマを受けようとやって来ました。そして、恐る恐る、「私たちはどうしたらよいのでしょう」と尋ねました。 13「正直になりなさい。ローマ政府が決めた以上の税金を取り立ててはいけない。」 14兵士たちも尋ねました。「私たちはどうすればいいのですか。」「脅しや暴力で金をゆすったり、何も悪いことをしない人を訴えたりしてはいけない。与えられる給料で満足しなさい。」
15民衆は、救い主を待望していました。そして、もしかしたらヨハネがキリストではないかと考えたのです。 16この疑問を、ヨハネはきっぱり否定しました。「私は水でバプテスマを授けているだけだ。しかし、もうすぐ私よりはるかに権威ある方が来られる。その方のしもべとなる価値さえ、私にはない。その方は、聖霊と火でバプテスマをお授けになる。 17また、麦ともみがらとをふるい分け、麦は倉に納め、もみがらを永久に消えない火で焼き尽くされる。」 18ヨハネはほかにも多くのことを教え、民衆に福音を伝えました。
19-20〔当時、ガリラヤの領主ヘロデ・アンテパスが、兄嫁のヘロデヤを奪い取るなど悪事を行っていたので、ヨハネは彼を非難しました。そのためヨハネは捕らえられ、投獄されました。こうしてヘロデは、多くの悪に悪を重ねました。〕 21さて、そうしたある日のこと、イエスは、ヨハネからバプテスマを受ける人々に加わりました。バプテスマを受け、祈っておられると、天が開き、 22聖霊が鳩のようにイエスに下りました。そして天から、「あなたはわたしの愛する子、わたしはあなたを喜ぶ」という声が聞こえました。

John the Baptist Prepares the Way
1In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
6And all people will see God’s salvation.’ ”3:6 Isaiah 40:3-5
7John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10“What should we do then?” the crowd asked.
11John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
12Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13“Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.
14Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
15The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16John answered them all, “I baptize you with3:16 Or in water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with3:16 Or in the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” 18And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
19But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.
The Baptism and Genealogy of Jesus
21When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
23Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,

the son of Levi, the son of Melki,
the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
25the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos,
the son of Nahum, the son of Esli,
the son of Naggai, 26the son of Maath,
