神を恐れなさい
1そのうちに、群衆の数はますますふくれ上がり、足の踏み場もない有様です。イエスはまず、弟子たちに警告なさいました。「何よりも、パリサイ人の偽善ぶりに注意しなさい。ほんとうは悪いことをたくらんでいるのに善人ぶる者たちのやり方に、ごまかされてはいけません。 2しかし、そういう偽善は、いつまでも隠しおおせるものではありません。やがてパン種（パンの製造に使用する酵母）のようにふくれ始め、だれの目にもはっきりします。 3暗闇にまぎれて言ったことがみな、明るみで聞かれ、奥の部屋でささやいたことが屋上から大声で宣伝されるのです。
4親しい友よ。体を殺しても、たましいには指一本ふれることができない者たちを恐れてはいけません。 5ほんとうに恐れなければならない方を教えましょう。殺した後に、地獄に投げ込む力を持っておられる神を恐れなさい。神こそ、ほんとうに恐れなければならない方です。 6雀五羽はいったい、いくらで売られていますか。たったの二アサリオン（一日分の賃金一デナリの八分の一）ではありませんか。こんな雀の一羽でさえ、神はお見捨てにならないのです。 7それどころか、あなたがたの髪の毛の数さえご存じです。だから、恐れることはありません。あなたがたは、たくさんの雀よりはるかに価値があるのですから。 8次のことをはっきりさせておきましょう。この地上で、わたしを友とはっきり認める人を、メシヤであるわたしも、天使の前で、確かにわたしの友だと認めます。 9だが、もし人前でわたしを知らないと言うなら、わたしも天使の前で、こんな人は見覚えもないと言います。 10たとえ、わたしに逆らっても赦されます。しかし、聖霊を汚す者は絶対に赦されないのです。 11裁判を受けるために役人や会堂の権力者たちの前に引き出されても、どう釈明しようかなどと心配してはいけません。 12聖霊が、時にかなったことばを教えてくださるからです。」
13その時、群衆の中から一人の男が叫びました。「先生！ どうぞ兄に、父の遺産を分けてくれるよう言ってください。」 14「だれがわたしを、そんなことの裁判官にしたのですか。」 15続けてイエスは群衆に言われました。「貪欲にはくれぐれも注意しなさい。どんな金持ちでも、人のいのちは財産とは無関係なのですから。」
16それからイエスは、たとえ話を一つなさいました。「ある金持ちが、良い作物のとれる肥えた畑を持っていました。 17倉はいっぱいで、収穫物を全部納めきれないほどです。あれこれ考えたあげく、うまい考えを思いつきました。 18『こうすればいい。あの倉を取りこわして、もっと大きいのを建てる。そうすれば、作物を全部納められる。』 19ひとり満足した金持ちは、われとわが身に言い聞かせたのです。『もう何も心配はいらないぞ。これから先何年分もの食料がたっぷりある。さあ、食べて、飲んで、楽しくやろう。』 20しかし神は、こう言われました。『愚か者よ！ あなたのいのちは、今夜にもなくなる。そうしたら、ここにある物は、いったいだれのものになるのか。』 21いいですか。この地上でいくらため込んでも、天国に財産を持っていない者は、愚か者なのです。」
22それからまた、弟子たちのほうを向き、先を続けられました。「ですから、言っておきましょう。食べ物は十分か、着る物はあるか、といったことでいちいち心配するのはやめなさい。 23人のいのちは、食べ物や着る物よりどれだけ価値があるか知れないのです。 24からすを見なさい。種もまかず、刈り入れもせず、倉を持っているわけでもありません。それでもゆうゆうと構えていられるのは、神が養ってくださるからです。神の目には、からすなどより、あなたがたのほうが大切なのです。 25それに、くよくよしたところで、どうにもなりません。心配すれば、寿命が一日でも延びるのですか。 26こんな小さなことさえできない者が、もっと大きなことを心配したところで何になるでしょう。
27ゆりの花を見なさい。どうして育つのでしょう。紡いだり、織ったりするわけではありません。栄華をきわめたソロモンでさえ、この花ほど着飾ってはいませんでした。 28今日は咲き誇っていても、明日はしぼんでしまう花でさえ、神はこのように装ってくださるのです。そうだとしたら、疑い深い人たちよ、神がどんなに良くしてくださるかとは考えないのですか。 29何を食べようか、何を飲もうかと心配をするのはやめなさい。神が用意してくださるのに、思いわずらってはいけません。 30人は毎日のパンのためにあくせく働きますが、天の父は、あなたがたが必要なものをすべてご存じなのです。 31神の国を第一に考えるなら、神は私たちに必要なものを毎日与えてくださるのです。
32また、たとえ少数派でも恐れることはありません。神は喜んで、あなたがたを神の国に導いてくださるのです。 33持ち物を売り払って、貧しい人たちに分けてあげなさい。そうすれば、天にある財布はふくらんで、はち切れそうになること間違いありません。ところが、この財布は破れもしなければ、穴があくこともないから、財産がなくなることは絶対にありません。どろぼうに盗まれることも、虫に食われる心配もありません。 34宝のある所に、自分の心と思いもあるのです。
神に忠実な人は
35きちんと身じたくを整え、あかりをともしていなさい。 36主人が婚礼から戻るのを待っている人のように。こうしていれば、主人がノックすると同時に、戸を開けて迎えることができます。 37そのように忠実な姿を見られる人は幸いです。主人は感心して、食卓で、反対に自分のほうから給仕してくれるでしょう。 38主人の帰りは夜の九時になるか、真夜中になるかわかりません。しかし、いつ帰って来てもいいように準備のできている人は幸いです。 39どろぼうがいつ入るかわかっていれば、家人は、てぐすね引いて待ちかまえているでしょう。同様に、主人の帰りが何時ごろかはっきりわかっていれば、準備をして待つのはあたりまえです。 40だから、いつでも用意していなさい。メシヤのわたしは、思いがけない時に来るのです。」
41ペテロが、いぶかしげに尋ねました。「主よ。今のお話は、私たちにだけ話されたのですか。それとも、ここにいるみんなのためなのですか。」 42-44イエスは、お答えになりました。「では、こう言えばわかるでしょうか。主人の留守中、ほかの召使たちの面倒を見る責任を負わされた、忠実で賢い人たちに話しているのです。主人が戻った時、かいがいしく働いているところを見られるなら、ほんとうに幸いです。主人から全財産を任されることになるでしょう。 45ところが、『主人はまだまだお帰りになるまい』とたかをくくり、召使たちを打ちたたき、食べたり飲んだりしていたらどうでしょう。 46主人は出し抜けに帰って来て、この有様を見ます。不届き者は、責任ある地位からはずされ、不忠実な者と同じ仕事につけられるのでしょう。 47自分の義務を心得ながら、果たそうとしなかった罰です。 48しかし、自分でも気がつかないうちに悪いことをした人の罰は、軽くてすみます。だれでも多く与えられた者は多く求められ、多く任された者は多く要求されるのです。
49わたしは、この地上に火を投げ込むために来ました。ああ、この仕事がもうすでに終わっていたらよかったのですが。 50しかし、わたしには受けるべきバプテスマ（洗礼）が待っています。それが成し遂げられるまで、どんなに苦しむことでしょう。 51このわたしが、地上に平和を与えるために来たと思っているとしたら、そうではありません。それどころか、争いと分裂を引き起こすために来たのです。 52今から後、家庭内に分裂が生じるでしょう。五人家族であれば、三人対二人というように、わたしに賛成するか反対するかで分かれて争うことになります。 53わたしのことで、息子は父に逆らうでしょう。母と娘は一致しなくなり、しゅうとめも嫁に退けられるでしょう。」
54群衆にもこう語られました。「あなたがたは天気を予測するのがとても上手です。西の空に雲がわき上がれば、『にわか雨が来る』と言い、まさにそのとおりになります。 55また南風が吹けば、『ひどく暑い日になるぞ』と言い、それもまた予測どおりになるのです。 56偽善者たちよ！ これほど上手に空模様を見分けられるのに、目前に迫る危機については少しの注意もはらおうとしないのですか。 57どうして、何が正しいかを見分けようとしないのですか。 58裁判所へ行く途中、あなたを訴える人と出会ったら、裁判官の前に出るまでに、問題を解決するよう努力しなさい。さもないと、牢獄に入れられてしまいます。 59そうなったら、最後の一レプタ（最小単位の銅貨）まで罰金を払いきらなければ、出してもらえないのです。」
1In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. 3Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. 4And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. 6Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. 8Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: 9But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. 10And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. 11And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: 12For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
13¶ And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. 14And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? 15And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. 16And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
22¶ And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. 23The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. 24Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? 25And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? 26If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? 27Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? 29And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. 30For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
31¶ But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. 32Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. 34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 35Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; 36And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. 37Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. 38And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. 39And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. 40Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.
41¶ Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all? 42And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? 43Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 44Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. 45But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; 46The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
49¶ I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? 50But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! 51Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: 52For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
54¶ And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. 55And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. 56Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? 57Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?
58¶ When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. 59I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.
