1「あなたがたは、どんなことがあっても、心配したりあわてたりしてはいけません。神を信じ、またわたしを信じなさい。 2父の住んでおられる所には、家がたくさんあります。もしなかったら、はっきり言っておいたでしょう。わたしは、あなたがたを迎える家を準備しに行くのです。 3すっかり準備ができたら迎えに来ます。わたしがいる所に、あなたがたもいられるようにするためです。 4これだけ言えば、わたしがどこへ行くか、どうしたらそこへ行けるか、もうわかったでしょう。」 5するとトマスが言いました。「いいえ、ちっともわかりません。先生がどこへおいでになるのか、まるで見当もつきません。ましてそこへ行く道など、どうしてわかりましょう。」 6イエスはトマスに言われました。「いいですか。わたしが道です。そして真理でもあり、いのちでもあります。わたしを通らなければ、だれ一人、父のところへは行けません。 7わたしがどういう者か知っているなら、わたしの父のこともわかったはずです。あなたがたは、今からはもう父を知っているし、すでに父を見ているのです。」 8今度はピリポが口をはさみました。「先生。あなたのお父様を見せてください。それだけで十分ですから。」 9「ピリポ。こんなに長くいっしょにいるのに、わたしがどういう者かまだわからないのですか。わたしを見た者は、父を見たのです。それなのにどうして父を見せてくださいなどと言うのですか。 10わたしが父のうちにおり、父がわたしのうちにおられることを信じないのですか。わたしは自分の考えを話しているのではありません。わたしのうちに住んでおられる父の命じられるままに話しているのです。父は、わたしを通して働きをなさいます。 11わたしが父のうちにおり、父がわたしのうちにおられる、ただこのことを信じなさい。もし信じられないなら、わたしが行った力ある奇跡を思い出してごらんなさい。そうしたら信じられるでしょう。 12よく言っておきます。わたしを信じる者は、わたしと同じわざを行うばかりか、それよりもさらに大きなわざを行うのです。わたしが父のもとに行くからです。 13わたしの名によって、父に願い求めなさい。どんなことでもかなえてあげましょう。父が子によってほめたたえられるためです。 14わたしの名によって願い求めることは、必ずかなえられるのです。
もう一人の助け手（聖霊）の約束
15わたしを愛するなら、わたしの戒めを守りなさい。 16わたしは父に、もう一人の助け手を送っていただくようお願いします。その助け手は、いつもあなたがたと共におられます。 17その方とは聖霊、すなわち、すべてを真理へと導いてくださる霊のことです。世は、この方を受け入れることができません。この方を求めもしなければ、認めようともしないからです。しかし、あなたがたはこの方を知っています。あなたがたと共に住み、あなたがたのうちにおられるからです。 18わたしはあなたがたを見捨てたり、孤児のように置き去りにしたりすることなどありません。必ずあなたがたのところに帰って来ます。 19もうすぐわたしはこの世を去りますが、それでもなおいっしょにいるのです。わたしはよみがえり、あなたがたもいのちを受けるからです。 20わたしが復活する時、あなたがたは、わたしが父のうちにおり、あなたがたがわたしのうちにおり、また、わたしがあなたがたのうちにいることがわかります。 21わたしに従い、わたしの戒めを守る人は、わたしを愛する人です。わたしを愛する人を、父は愛してくださいます。わたしもまたその人を愛し、わたし自身を現します。」 22ユダ（イスカリオテ・ユダではなく、同名の他の弟子）がイエスに、不思議そうに尋ねました。「先生。私たち弟子にだけご自分を現そうとなさって、世の人に現そうとなさらないのはどうしてですか。」 23イエスはお答えになりました。「わたしを愛し、わたしのことばを守る人にだけ、わたしは自分を現すのです。父もまた、そういう人を愛してくださいます。わたしたちはその人のところに来て、その人といっしょに住みます。 24わたしのことばを守らない人は、わたしを愛していないのです。わたしは、自分で考え出したことを話しているのではありません。わたしをお遣わしになった父が教えてくださったことを話しているのです。
25今、まだあなたがたといっしょにいる間に、このことをみな話しておきます。 26しかし、父がわたしの代わりに助け手（聖霊）を送ってくださる時には、その方があなたがたにすべてのことを教え、わたしが話しておいたことを、みな思い出させてくださるのです。 27あなたがたに贈り物をあげましょう。あなたがたの思いと心を安らかにすること、それがわたしの贈り物です。わたしが与える平安は、この世のはかない平安とは比べものになりません。だから、どんな時にもおろおろしたり、恐れたりしてはいけません。 28『わたしは去って行くが、また戻って来る』と言ったことを思い出しなさい。ほんとうにわたしを愛しているなら、今わたしが父のもとに行けるのを、心から喜んでくれるはずです。父はわたしよりも偉大だからです。 29わたしは、まだ起こっていないことを前もって話しました。それが起こった時に、あなたがたがわたしを信じるためです。 30もう、あまり多くのことを話す時間がありません。この世の悪い支配者が、そこまで近づいているからです。彼はわたしに何もできません。 31わたしは、父がしなさいとおっしゃることを進んで実行します。わたしが父を愛していることを、世の人が知るためです。さあ、出かけましょう。
Jesus Comforts His Disciples
1“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God14:1 Or Believe in God; believe also in me. 2My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Jesus the Way to the Father
5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you really know me, you will know14:7 Some manuscripts If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
8Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
9Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15“If you love me, keep my commands. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be14:17 Some early manuscripts and is in you. 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
22Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”
23Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
25“All this I have spoken while still with you. 26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
28“You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.
