1数日後、イエスはカペナウムに戻られました。すると、イエス来訪のニュースはたちまち町中に伝わり、 2人々が大ぜい集まって来ました。家は足の踏み場もないほどで、外まで人があふれています。その人たちに、イエスは神の教えを語られました。 3その時、四人の人が、中風（脳出血などによる半身不随、手足のまひ等の症状）の男をかついで運んで来ました。 4しかしあまりの人に、群衆をかき分けて中へ入ることもできません。そこで、屋根にのぼり、穴をあけると、そこから病人を寝床のまま、イエスの前へつり降ろしました。 5必ず治してもらえると、堅く信じて疑わない彼らの信仰をごらんになって、イエスは中風の男に、「あなたの罪は赦されました」と言われました。
6ところが、その場にいた何人かのユダヤ人の宗教的指導者たちの心中は、おだやかではありませんでした。 7「なんだと！ 今のは神を汚すことばだ。いったい自分をだれだと思っているのか。罪を赦すなんて、神にしかできないことなのに。」
8イエスはすぐに、彼らが心の中で理屈をこねているのを見抜かれました。「どうして、そう思うのですか。 9-11この人に、『あなたの罪が赦されました』と言うのと、『起きて歩きなさい』と言うのと、どちらがやさしいですか。さあ、メシヤ（ヘブル語で、救い主）のわたしが罪を赦したという証拠を見せてあげましょう。」イエスは中風の男のほうに向き直り、「あなたはもうよくなりました。床をたたんで、家に帰りなさい」と言われました。
12すると男は飛び起き、寝床をかかえ、あっけにとられている見物人を押し分けて、出て行ってしまいました。「こんなことは、見たこともない！」人々は口々に叫び、心から神を賛美しました。
13イエスはまた湖畔に行き、集まって来た群衆にお教えになりました。 14岸辺を歩いておられると、税金取立て所にアルパヨの子レビ（マタイ）が座っていました。「ついて来て、わたしの弟子になりなさい。」イエスの呼びかけに、レビはさっと立ち上がり、あとに従いました。
15その夜、レビはイエスを夕食に招待しました。その席には、取税人仲間や、評判の悪い人たちも多く招かれていました。イエスに従う者には、こういう人々も多かったのです。 16これを見たパリサイ派（特に律法を守ることに熱心なユダヤ教の一派）の律法学者は、弟子たちに詰め寄りました。「おまえたちの先生は、どうして、こんなどうしようもない連中といっしょに食事をするのか。」 17彼らの非難に、イエスはこうお答えになりました。「丈夫な者に医者はいりません。病人こそ医者が必要なのです。わたしは、自分を正しいと思っている人たちのためにではなく、罪人を神に立ち返らせるために来たのです。」
パリサイ人の非難
18バプテスマのヨハネの弟子やパリサイ人たちは、断食のおきてを守っていました。ある時、彼らが来て、「どうして先生のお弟子さんたちは断食しないのですか」と問いただしました。 19イエスは、こうお答えになりました。「花婿の友人は、披露宴の席で、ごちそうに手をつけなかったり、嘆き悲しんだりはしません。 20しかし、やがて花婿が彼らから引き離される日が来ます。その時には断食するのです。 21こう言えばわかるでしょう。水洗いしていない新しい布で、古い着物の継ぎ当てをしてごらんなさい。どうなりますか。当て布は縮んで着物を破り、穴はますます大きくなってしまうでしょう。 22新しいぶどう酒を古い皮袋に入れることもしません。そんなことをしたら、皮袋は張り裂け、ぶどう酒はこぼれ、どちらもだいなしでしょう。新しいぶどう酒には、新しい皮袋が必要なのです。」
23ある安息日（神の定めた休息日）のこと、イエスと弟子たちは麦畑の中を歩いていました。すると、弟子たちが麦の穂を摘んで、食べ始めました。 24これを見たパリサイ人たちは、「お弟子さんたちがあんなことをするなんて！ 安息日に刈り入れをするのは違反なのをご存じのはずでしょう」と、イエスに抗議しました。
25-26しかし、イエスはお答えになりました。「アビヤタルが大祭司のころ、ダビデ王とその家来たちが空腹でがまんできなかった時、神殿に入って、祭司以外が食べてはいけない特別のパンを食べたというのを、読んだことがないのですか。それもおきてに反することでしょうか。 27いいですか。安息日は人間のためにつくられたのであって、人間が安息日のためにつくられたのではありません。 28メシヤ（救い主）のわたしには、安息日に何をしてよいかを決める権威もあるのです。」
1And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. 2And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them. 3And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. 4And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. 5When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. 6But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, 7Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? 8And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? 9Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? 10But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) 11I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house. 12And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion. 13And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them. 14And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphæus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. 15And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him. 16And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? 17When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. 18And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? 19And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. 21No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. 22And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles. 23And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. 24And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? 25And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him? 26How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? 27And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: 28Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
