1キリストは肉体に苦しみを受けられたのですから、あなたがたも、いつ苦しみに会ってもよい心がまえでいなさい。肉体に苦しみを受けても、神に従い通した人は、罪とはっきり手を切りました。 2こうしてあなたがたは、残りの人生を人間的な欲望の追求に費やすことなく、神の御心のままに生きるようになるのです。 3かつて、あなたがたは異教徒がしたがるように、好色、肉欲、酔酒、遊興、偶像礼拝にふけっていました。もうそれで十分です。 4昔の仲間は、もうどんなに誘っても、あなたがたが悪い遊びに応じないのを見て、ずいぶん驚き、また、ばかにするかもしれません。 5しかし、覚えておきなさい。彼らは、生きている者と死んだ者すべてをさばかれる裁判官の前で、罪を問いただされることになるのです。 6だからこそ、福音は洪水で滅ぼされた人々にも伝えられたのです。それは、たとえ肉体には死の罰が下されても、霊においては神に生かされるためでした。
愛は多くの欠けた点を補う
7世の終わりが近づいています。ですから、分別を持ち、身を慎んで祈りなさい。 8何よりも、互いに熱心に愛し合いなさい。愛は、多くの欠けた点を補うからです。 9食べる物に困り、宿のない人がいたら、気持ちよく家に迎え入れてあげなさい。
10神はあなたがた一人一人に賜物を与えておられます。それぞれに与えられた賜物によって、互いに助け合い、神からのあふれる恵みを他の人と分かち合いなさい。 11説教するために選ばれた人は、神があなたを通してじかにお語りになるように語りなさい。人に奉仕するために選ばれた人は、神が下さる力に満たされて人々を助けなさい。それは、すべてのことにおいて、イエス・キリストを通して神がほめたたえられるためです。どうか、栄光と力がいつまでもキリストにありますように。アーメン。
12愛する皆さん。炎のように燃えさかる試練に直面しても、あわてたり、おじけづいたりしてはいけません。ふりかかる試練は、決して思いがけないものでも、異常なものでもないからです。 13むしろ、その試練によってキリストと苦しみを分かち合えるのですから、喜びなさい。やがてキリストの栄光が現れる時、その栄光を共に受けて、すばらしい喜びを味わうためです。 14もしクリスチャンであるばかりに、ののしられ、非難されるなら、あなたがたは幸いです。神の御霊がいっしょにいてくださるからです。
15だれも、人殺しや盗みの罪に問われたり、問題を引き起こしたり、みだりに他人のことに首を突っ込んだりして、そのために苦しむことがないよう気をつけてください。そんなことが、私の耳に入らないようにしてください。 16しかし、クリスチャンだという理由で苦しみを受けるなら、少しも恥じることはありません。それは、キリストの家族の一員として、キリストの名で呼ばれる特権を受けた証拠ですから、神をほめたたえなさい。 17なぜなら、さばきの時がすでに来ているからです。しかもそのさばきは、神の家（教会）から始まるのです。このように、クリスチャンの私たちでさえさばかれるのなら、神に従わない人々には、どんなに恐ろしい運命が待ち受けていることでしょう。 18正しい人がかろうじて救われるのであれば、神を信じない人々は、いったいどんなことになるのでしょう。
19ですから、あなたがたの今の苦しみが神の御心に添うものであるなら、なお続けて善を行いなさい。そして、あなたがたを造られた神に、すべてをお任せしなさい。神から見捨てられることは決してありません。
Living for God
1Christ suffered in his body. So prepare yourselves to think in the same way Christ did. Do this because whoever suffers in their body is finished with sin. 2As a result, they don’t live the rest of their earthly life for evil human desires. Instead, they live to do what God wants. 3You have spent enough time in the past doing what ungodly people choose to do. You lived a wild life. You longed for evil things. You got drunk. You went to wild parties. You worshiped statues of gods, which the Lord hates. 4Ungodly people are surprised that you no longer join them in what they do. They want you to join them in their wild and wasteful living. So they say bad things about you. 5But they will have to explain their actions to God. He is ready to judge those who are alive and those who are dead. 6That’s why the good news was preached even to people who are now dead. It was preached to them for two reasons. It was preached so that their bodies might be judged. This judgment is made by human standards. But the good news was also preached so that their spirits might live. This life comes by means of God’s power.
7The end of all things is near. So be watchful and control yourselves. Then you may pray. 8Most of all, love one another deeply. Love erases many sins by forgiving them. 9Welcome others into your homes without complaining. 10God’s gifts of grace come in many forms. Each of you has received a gift in order to serve others. You should use it faithfully. 11If anyone speaks, they should do it as one speaking God’s words. If anyone serves, they should do it with the strength God provides. Then in all things God will be praised through Jesus Christ. Glory and power belong to him for ever and ever. Amen.
Suffering for Being a Christian
12Dear friends, don’t be surprised by the terrible things happening to you. The trouble you are having has come to test you. So don’t feel as if something strange were happening to you. 13Instead, be joyful that you are taking part in Christ’s sufferings. Then you will have even more joy when Christ returns in glory. 14Suppose people say bad things about you because you believe in Christ. Then you are blessed, because God’s Spirit rests on you. He is the Spirit of glory. 15If you suffer, it shouldn’t be because you are a murderer. It shouldn’t be because you are a thief or someone who does evil things. It shouldn’t be because you interfere with other people’s business. 16But suppose you suffer for being a Christian. Then don’t be ashamed. Instead, praise God because you are known by the name of Christ. 17It is time for judgment to begin with the household of God. And since it begins with us, what will happen to people who don’t obey God’s good news? 18Scripture says,
“Suppose it is hard for godly people to be saved.
Then what will happen to ungodly people and sinners?” (Proverbs 11:31)
19Here is what people who suffer because of God’s plan should do. They should commit themselves to their faithful Creator. And they should continue to do good.
