ダニエル、ライオンの穴に投げ込まれる
1ダリヨス王は国を百二十の州に分け、それぞれに知事を置きました。 2州知事の上に三人の大臣を置き、ダニエルはその一人でした。この三人への報告を義務づけることで、王は効果的に王国を治めることができました。 3ダニエルにはすぐれた能力があり、他の大臣や州知事よりも有能であることが、だれの目にも明らかになりました。そこで王は、彼を行政長官にして全国を治めさせようと考えました。 4そのため、他の大臣や州知事は激しく嫉妬し、ダニエルの行政に落度はないかと探り、王に訴える口実を見つけようとしました。しかし、何一つ批判できる点を見つけることができません。ダニエルは誠実で、正直にふるまい、間違いを犯すことがありませんでした。 5そこで、「残された道はただ一つ、ダニエルの宗教に関することだ」ということになったのです。 6彼らは王のもとへ行き、次のように進言しました。「ダリヨス王よ。いつまでもご健勝であられますように。 7私ども大臣、州知事、参議官ならびに総督は、どんな事情があっても取り消すことのできない法令を制定していただくよう、全会一致で決議いたしました。その法令とは、向こう三十日間、王以外のどんな神にも人にも祈りをささげる者があれば、ライオンの餌食にされる、というものでございます。 8この法令に署名をお願いいたします。そうすれば、これは無効にすることも変更することもできない『メディヤとペルシヤの法律』となるのでございます。」 9そこで王は、この法律に署名しました。
10ところが、ダニエルはそのことを知りましたが、家に帰るといつものように、二階の寝室でひざまずきました。エルサレムの方角の窓を開けて、彼は一日に三度、神に祈り、感謝をささげていたのです。 11陰謀を企てた者たちがダニエルの家に押しかけてみると、神に哀願し、祈っているダニエルの姿を見つけました。 12彼らは王のもとに急ぎ、あの法律について念を押しました。「王は、向こう三十日間、王以外のどんな神にも人にも祈りをささげてはならないという法律に署名なさいました。その法律に背く者は、ライオンの餌食にされるのでしたね。」「そのとおりだ。変更も取り消しもできない『メディヤとペルシヤの法律』だ。」 13そこで彼らは王に訴えました。「あのユダヤ人捕虜の一人、ダニエルは、王も王の法律も無視して、日に三度、彼の神に祈りをささげているのです。」 14これを聞いて、王は法律に署名したことを悔やみ、何とかしてダニエルを助けようとしました。そして日が暮れるまで、ダニエルを救い出す手だてはないものかと思い巡らしていました。 15夕方になると、陰謀を企てた者たちがまた来て、こう言います。「王様。もう、どうしようもありません。王が署名された法律ですから、変更の余地はございません。」
16とうとう王は、ダニエルを逮捕するよう命じました。ダニエルは捕らえられ、ライオンの穴に投げ込まれたのです。王はダニエルに呼びかけました。「おまえがいつも礼拝している神が、どうか、おまえを救ってくださるように。」 17それから一つの石が運んで来られ、穴の口に置かれました。だれもダニエルをライオンの穴から救い出せないようにと、王と政府の公印をもって封じたのです。 18王は宮殿に帰ると、食事もせずに寝室に入りました。いつもの余興も受けつけず、一睡もしないで夜を明かしました。
19-20翌日、まだ夜の明けないうちに、王はライオンの穴に駆けつけ、悲痛な声で叫びました。「ダニエル！ 生ける神のしもべよ！ おまえがいつも礼拝している神は、おまえをライオンから救ってくださったか。」 21すると、ダニエルの声がするではありませんか。「王様。永遠に生き長らえられますように。 22私の神が御使いを送り、ライオンの口をふさいでくださったので、ライオンは何もできませんでした。それは、神の前で、私に罪のないことが認められたからです。また、王に対しても、何も悪いことをしていないからです。」 23王は我を忘れて喜び、ダニエルを穴から引き上げるよう命じました。ダニエルは神に信頼していたので、体にはかすり傷一つ負いませんでした。 24王は、ダニエルを訴えた者たちを妻子ともども捕らえ、ライオンの穴に投げ込みました。すると、彼らが穴の底に落ちないうちにライオンが飛びかかり、引き裂いてしまいました。
25-26そののち、ダリヨス王は国中の全国民に、次のような声明文を書き送りました。
「すべての民に告ぐ。私の国のどこでも、ダニエルの神の前に、震えおののくようにせよ。
彼の神こそ、変わることのない生ける神であり、
その国は滅びることがなく、
その力は尽きることがない。
27この神はご自分の民を救い出し、
危険から守られる。
天と地において、驚くべき奇跡を行われる。
ライオンからダニエルを救い出してくださったのは、
実に、この神だ。」
28こうしてダニエルは、ダリヨス王の治世とペルシヤ人クロス王の治世に栄えました。
1It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; 2And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage. 3Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
4¶ Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him. 5Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
6Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.6.6 assembled…: or, came tumultuously 7All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.6.7 decree: or, interdict 8Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.6.8 altereth not: Chaldee, passeth not 9Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.
10¶ Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
11Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God. 12Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not. 13Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day. 14Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him. 15Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed. 16Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee. 17And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.
18¶ Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him.6.18 instruments…: or, table 19Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions. 20And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? 21Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. 22My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt. 23Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.
24¶ And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.
25¶ Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. 26I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end. 27He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.6.27 power: Chaldee, hand 28So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
