ネブカデネザルが見た木の夢
1ネブカデネザル王は、次のような声明文を、世界の諸国、諸国語の民に送りました。
諸国の民に告ぐ。
2いと高き神が、私に行われた不思議なことについて、
あなたがたすべてに知らせたい。
3それは信じ難いほどの奇跡であった。
今こそ、この神の王国が永遠のものであることを、
私ははっきり知った。
その神の支配は永遠に変わらない。
4私、ネブカデネザルは、平安と繁栄の中で生きていた。 5ところがある夜、非常に恐ろしい夢を見た。 6そこで、バビロン中の知者を集めて、夢の解き明かしをさせることにした。 7呪法師、占星学者、占い師、魔術師が、みな集まった。その席で私の夢のことを話したが、だれも解き明かせなかった。 8最後にダニエルが来た。私は自分の神の名にちなんで、彼にベルテシャツァルと名をつけたが、この者には聖なる神の霊が宿っていた。そこでダニエルに夢のことを話した。 9「呪法師の長ベルテシャツァルよ。おまえのうちに聖なる神の霊が宿っており、どんな秘密も見事に解き明かせることを知っている。私の夢の意味を教えてほしい。 10-11私は野原に立っている大木を見た。その木は天へ向かってどんどん伸び、ついに世界中の人々から見えるほどになった。 12葉は青々と茂り、枝にはすべての人が食べても足りるほど、実がたわわになっていた。野の動物はその木陰にいこい、鳥はその枝を住みかとし、全世界がその木によって養われた。
13以上のようなことを夢で見ていると、神の使いの一人が天から降りて来るのが見えた。 14その使いはこう叫んだ。『その木を切り倒し、枝を切り払え。葉を振り落とし、実をまき散らせ。動物を木陰から、鳥を枝から追い払え。 15だが、切り株と根は地に残し、鉄と青銅の鎖をかけて、野の若草の中に置け。天の露にぬれさせ、野の動物といっしょに草を食べさせるのだ。 16七年間、人の心ではなく動物の心を持たせよ。 17これは見張り人たちの宣告であり、聖なる者たちの命令である。このように宣言するのは、いと高き方が世界の国々を支配し、御心のままに、人間の中で最もへりくだった者にさえその国々をお与えになるということを、全世界が知るためである。』 18ベルテシャツァルよ。以上が私の見た夢だ。さあ、その意味を教えてくれ。ほかに助けてくれる者はいない。この王国で最も知恵のある者でもだめだった。だが、おまえならできる。聖なる神の霊が宿っているのだから。」
ダニエルによる夢の解釈
19その時ダニエルは、しばらくの間、その夢の意味にがくぜんとして、おびえてひと言も口をきけなかった。ついに、私が口を開いた。「ベルテシャツァル、恐れることはない。夢の意味を話してくれ。」ダニエルは答えた。「この夢の示していることが、王にではなく、王の敵に当てはまるのならよろしいのですが……。 20-22夢でごらんになりました木、青々とした葉を茂らせ、みなが食べても足りるほど実をたわわにつけ、その陰には野獣が住まい、枝には鳥がいっぱいに宿り、世界中の人々に見えるように天にまで達した高い木は、王ご自身でございます。あなたは強く、大きくなり、その偉大さは天にまで達し、ご支配は地の果てにまで及びます。 23しかし王は、神の使いが天から降りて来て、こう言うのをお聞きになりました。『この木を切り倒して滅ぼせ。ただし、切り株と根は若草に囲まれたまま地に残し、鉄と青銅の鎖をかけておけ。天の露にぬれさせ、七年間、野の動物たちといっしょに草を食べさせよ。』 24王様。これはいと高き神がお定めになったことですから、必ず起こります。 25国民があなたを宮殿から追い出します。あなたは動物のように野に住んで、牛のように草を食べ、背中は天の露でぬれるでしょう。いと高き神が人間の国々を支配し、お選びになった者に支配権を与えるということを、王が悟るまでの七年間、このような生活が続きます。 26ただし、切り株と根とは地に残されました。その意味は、天の神が支配しておられることを王が悟った時、国は戻って来るということです。 27ネブカデネザル王よ、お願いです。どうぞ、罪を犯されませんように。正しいことを行い、貧しい者をあわれんでください。そうすれば、あるいは神の赦しがあるかもしれません。」
夢の成就
28ところが、これらのことがみな私の身に起こった。 29この夢を見てから十二か月後、私はバビロンの王宮の屋上を歩きながら、 30こう言った。「私は自分の力で、この美しい都を、王宮のある町、帝国の首都に建て上げたのだ。」 31このことばを語り終えないうちに、天から声があった。「ネブカデネザル王よ。あなたに宣告する。あなたはもう、この国の王ではない。 32宮殿から追い出され、七年間、野の動物たちと共に住み、牛のように草を食べるのだ。それでやっと、神が人間に国々を分け与え、お選びになった者に国を与えることを悟るだろう。」 33そのことは、すぐ実現した。私は宮殿から追われ、牛のように草を食べ、体は露でぬれ、髪の毛はわしの羽のように長くなり、爪は鳥の爪のようになった。
34七年目の終わりに、私は天を見上げた。すると正気に戻ったので、いと高き神を賛美し、礼拝した。そして、永遠に生きておられる方、その御国の支配が代々限りなく続くお方をほめたたえた。
35神に比べれば、地上の人間はみな無に等しい。
神は、天の御使いたちの中にあっても、
地上に住む人々の中にあっても、
最善とお考えのことを行われる。
それに対して、
「どうして、こんなことをするのですか」と言って、
神に挑戦したり、神を止めたりはできない。
36正気に戻った時、私の名誉も光栄も、王国も戻って来た。参議官も役人も戻って来てくれたので、私は以前にもまさる栄誉に包まれ、王位を確立することができた。 37ここに今、私、ネブカデネザルは、その行うことがすべて正しく善である方、すべての者をさばく方、天の王を賛美し、ほめたたえる。このお方は、思い上がって歩む者を取り、ちりの中に押し込むことができる。
1Nebuchadnezzar the king, unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. 2I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me.4.2 I thought…: Chaldee, It was seemly before me 3How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.
4¶ I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace: 5I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. 6Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream. 7Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.
8¶ But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying, 9O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof. 10Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great.4.10 I saw: Chaldee, I was seeing 11The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth: 12The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was fed of it. 13I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven; 14He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches:4.14 aloud: Chaldee, with might 15Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth: 16Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beast’s heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him. 17This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men. 18This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.
19¶ Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies. 20The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth; 21Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation: 22It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth. 23And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him; 24This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king: 25That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. 26And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule. 27Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.4.27 a lengthening…: or, an healing of thine error
28¶ All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar. 29At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.4.29 in: or, upon 30The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty? 31While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee. 32And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. 33The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws.
34And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: 35And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? 36At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. 37Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
