アブシャロムを赦すダビデ
1将軍ヨアブは、アブシャロムに会いたがっている王の気持ちを察しました。 2-3そこで、知恵者として評判の高いテコアの女を呼び寄せ、王に会ってもらいたいと頼みました。そして、どういうふうに話せばいいかを指示したのです。「王の前で喪中の女を装うのだ。喪服をまとい、髪を振り乱し、長いこと深い悲しみに打ちひしがれてきたふりをするのだ。」
4女は王の前に出ると、床にひれ伏して哀願しました。
「王様！ どうぞ、お助けください！」
5-6「いったい、どうしたのだ。」
「私は夫を亡くした女でございます。息子が二人おりましたが、それが野でけんかをしたのです。だれも仲裁に入ってくれませんで、片方が殺されてしまいました。 7すると、親類中の者が寄ってたかって、残った息子を引き渡せと申すのです。兄弟を殺したような者は生かしておけないと言います。でも、そんなことになれば跡継ぎが絶えてしまい、夫の名も、この地上から消え去ってしまいます。」
8「わかった。任せておきなさい。だれもあなたの息子に手出しできないように取り計らってやろう。」
9「ありがとうございます、王様。こうしてお助けくださったことで、もし王様が責めをお受けになるようなことがありましたら、みな私の責任です。」
10「そんな心配はいらない。あれこれ言う者がいれば私のもとへ連れて来なさい。二度とあなたに文句が言えないようにさせよう。」
11「どうか、神にかけてお誓いください。息子には指一本ふれさせはしない、と。これ以上、血を見るのはたまりません。」
「神にかけて誓おう。あなたの息子の髪の毛一本も損なわれはしないと。」
12「どうぞ、もう一つだけ、お願いを聞いてください。」
「かまわぬ。言ってみなさい。」
13「王様、どうして私にお約束くださったことを、神の民全部に当てはめなさらないのですか。ただ今のようなお裁きによるなら、王様は罪ある者にされるのです。と申し上げるのは、追放されたご子息のお戻りを拒んでおられるからです。 14私どもはみな、いつかは死ななければなりません。人のいのちは地面にこぼれた水のようなもので、二度と集めることはできません。もし王様が、追放中のご子息をお迎えになる道を講じなさるなら、神様の末長い祝福がありましょう。 15-16このはしためが、息子のことでお願いに上がったのも、私と息子のいのちが脅かされていたからです。私は、『きっと王様は訴えを聞き入れ、私どもをイスラエルから消し去ろうとしている者の手から助け出してくださるに違いない。 17そして安らかな生活を取り戻させてくださるだろう』と思ったのです。王様は神の使いのようなお方で、善悪を正しくお裁きになれると存じています。どうぞ、あなたの神、主があなたとともにおられますように。」
18「一つだけ尋ねるが、よいか？」
「どうぞ、おっしゃってください。」
19「おまえを差し向けたのはヨアブではないか。」
「王様。こうなれば、隠しようがありません。仰せのとおり、ヨアブ様が私を遣わし、どう申し上げればよいかまで指示してくださいました。 20何とか事態をよくしようと、あの方の取り計らわれたことです。あなたは神の使いのように賢くあられ、また、この地上のすべてのことをご存じでいらっしゃいます。」
21そこで王はヨアブを呼び寄せ、「わかった。行って、アブシャロムを連れ戻して来なさい」と命じたのです。 22ヨアブは王の前にひれ伏し、祝福のことばを述べました。「今ようやく、あなたが私に情けをかけていてくださるとわかりました。この願いをお聞き入れくださったからです。」
23ヨアブはゲシュルの地に駆けつけ、アブシャロムをエルサレムに連れ戻しました。 24王は、「アブシャロムを自分の住まいに連れて行きなさい。ここに来させてはならない。私に会うことはならない」と申し渡しました。
25さて、イスラエル中を探しても、アブシャロムほど男らしく顔立ちのよい人物はいませんでした。また彼ほど、そのことでほめそやされた者もいませんでした。 26彼は年に一回、髪を刈りました。髪の重さが二百シェケル（約二・五キログラム）以上にもなり、そのままでは歩くのさえ難しかったからです。 27彼には息子三人と娘一人がいて、娘の名はタマルといい、たいへん美しい少女でした。
28アブシャロムは、二年間エルサレムにいながら、王には一度も会えませんでした。 29そこで、ヨアブに仲立ちを頼もうとしましたが、ヨアブは来ようとしません。二度も呼びにやりましたが、それでも来ません。 30しびれをきらしたアブシャロムは家来に、「私の畑と隣り合わせのヨアブの畑へ行き、大麦に火をつけろ」と命じました。彼らはそのとおりにしました。 31驚いたのはヨアブです。飛んで来て、「なぜ、あなたの家来たちは、うちの畑を焼いたりするのです」と抗議しました。 32アブシャロムは答えました。「実は頼みたいことがあるのだ。父上に尋ねてくれないか。会う気がないなら、どうして私をゲシュルから呼び戻したのか、と。こんなことなら、向こうにいたほうがましだった。とにかく、父上にお会いしたい。そのうえで、もし父上から罪を問われるなら、殺される覚悟はできている。」
33ヨアブは、アブシャロムのことばを王に伝えました。そのかいあって、ついに王もアブシャロムを呼び寄せました。アブシャロムは王の前に出ると、ひれ伏しました。その彼に、ダビデは口づけをしました。
1Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was toward Absalom. 2And Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead: 3And come to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.
4¶ And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.14.4 Help: Heb. Save 5And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine handmaid: 20To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.
21¶ And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again. 22And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joab said, To day thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.14.22 thanked: Heb. blessed14.22 his servant: or, thy servant 23So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. 24And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king’s face.
25¶ But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.14.25 But…: Heb. And as Absalom there was not a beautiful man in all Israel to praise greatly 26And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year’s end that he polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king’s weight. 27And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.
28¶ So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king’s face. 29Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come. 30Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab’s field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.14.30 near…: Heb. near my place 31Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire? 32And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me. 33So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.
