奪われた契約の箱
1当時、イスラエルはペリシテ人と戦っていました。イスラエル軍はエベン・エゼルの近くに陣を敷き、ペリシテ軍はアフェクまで進出していました。 2ペリシテ軍はイスラエル軍を撃破し、イスラエルでは約四千人の犠牲者が出ました。 3戦いが終わって陣営に戻ったイスラエル軍では、さっそく指導者たちが、なぜ主がイスラエルを痛めつけられたのかを論じ合いました。「契約の箱を、シロから運んで来ようではないか。それをかついで出陣すれば、主は必ず敵の手からお守りくださるだろう。」
4話がまとまると、ケルビム（天使を象徴する像）の上に座している万軍の主の契約の箱を迎えにやらせました。エリの二人の息子ホフニとピネハスも戦場までついて来ました。
5契約の箱が着いた時、イスラエル軍から大歓声が上がり、その響きは地をも揺るがすほどでした。 6ペリシテ人は、「いったい、どうしたんだろう。彼らは何を喜んでいるのだ？」と不思議がりました。そして、神の箱が着いたからだと知らされて、 7すっかりうろたえ始めました。「イスラエル人が神を呼んだって？ 大変なことになったぞ。こんなことは初めてだ。 8いったいだれが、あの力に満ちたイスラエルの神から、われわれを救い出してくれるのだろう。あの神は、イスラエル人が荒野をさまよっている間、ありとあらゆる災害をもたらしてエジプト人を打った神ではないか。 9さあ、みんな、今まで以上に気を引きしめて戦おう！ さもないと、われわれの奴隷だったやつらに、今度は逆に奴隷にされてしまうぞ。」
10こうしてペリシテ人は、総力を挙げて戦ったので、またもイスラエルは敗れてしまいました。その日のうちにひどい疫病が発生し、三万人が死に、生存者はほうほうのていでめいめいの天幕へ逃げ帰りました。 11さらに契約の箱まで奪われ、ホフニとピネハスも殺されたのです。
12同じ日、一人のベニヤミン人が戦場から駆け戻り、シロにたどり着きました。何か悲しいことがあったのでしょう。男の服は裂け、頭には土をかぶっています。 13その時、エリは道のそばに設けた席で、戦況報告を今か今かと待っていました。というのも、契約の箱のことが心配だったからです。前線から到着したその使者が、町中に一部始終を知らせると、人々はこぞって泣き叫びました。 14それを聞いたエリは、「この騒ぎは、いったい何だ」といぶかりました。その時、例の使者がエリのもとへ駆けつけ、すべてを報告したのです。 15エリは九十八歳で、目も見えなくなっていました。
16「私はたった今、戦場から戻りました。今日、戦場を発って来たのです。 17わが軍はさんざん痛めつけられ、幾千もの兵を失いました。ホフニ様とピネハス様も討ち死にされ、契約の箱まで奪われてしまいました。」
18それを聞いたとたん、エリはその席から門のわきに仰向けに倒れ、首の骨を折って死んでしまいました。年老いていた上に、太っていたからです。エリは四十年間、イスラエルを裁いたことになります。
19エリの息子の嫁に当たるピネハスの妻は出産間近でしたが、神の箱が奪われ、夫としゅうとが死んだという知らせを聞いて、急に激しい陣痛に襲われました。 20瀕死の彼女に、世話役の女たちが、「気をお確かに。お産は軽くて、男の子ですよ」と励ましました。しかし、彼女には答える気力もありません。 21-22しばらくして、力なくつぶやきました。「この子の名前は『イ・カボデ』（「栄光が去る」の意）よ。イスラエルから栄光が去ったから。」神の箱を奪われ、夫としゅうととを亡くしたので、彼女はそう名づけたのです。
1And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.
The Philistines capture the ark
Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek. 2The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, ‘Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that he may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.’
4So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim. And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout that the ground shook. 6Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, ‘What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?’
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7the Philistines were afraid. ‘A god has4:7 Or ‘Gods have (see Septuagint) come into the camp,’ they said. ‘Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. 9Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!’
10So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
Death of Eli
12That same day a Benjaminite ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust on his head. 13When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
14Eli heard the outcry and asked, ‘What is the meaning of this uproar?’
The man hurried over to Eli, 15who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes had failed so that he could not see. 16He told Eli, ‘I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.’
Eli asked, ‘What happened, my son?’
17The man who brought the news replied, ‘Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.’
18When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backwards off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led4:18 Traditionally judged Israel for forty years.
19His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labour and gave birth, but was overcome by her labour pains. 20As she was dying, the women attending her said, ‘Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.’ But she did not respond or pay any attention.
21She named the boy Ichabod,4:21 Ichabod means no glory. saying, ‘The Glory has departed from Israel’ – because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22She said, ‘The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.’
