油を注がれたダビデ
1主はサムエルに言いました。「いつまでサウルのことでくよくよしているのか。もうわたしは、彼をイスラエルの王位から退けてしまったのだ。さあ、つぼいっぱいにオリーブ油を満たして、ベツレヘムへ行き、エッサイという人を探しなさい。わたしは、その息子の一人を新しい王に選んだ。」
2しかしサムエルは、「どうしてそんなことができましょう。それがサウルの耳に入ったら殺されます」と言いました。しかし、主は答えました。「あなたは雌の子牛を一頭取り、『主にいけにえをささげに行く』と言えばよい。 3そして、いけにえをささげる時、エッサイを呼びなさい。どの息子に油を注いだらよいかは、そこで指示しよう。」
4サムエルは主のことばどおりに行いました。一方ベツレヘムでは、町の長老たちが恐る恐るサムエルを出迎えて言いました。「これは、これは。わざわざお越しになられたのは、何か変わったことでも？」
5「いや、心配はご無用です。主にいけにえをささげに来たまでです。いけにえをささげるため、身をきよめていっしょに来てください。」サムエルはエッサイと息子たちにきよめの儀式を行い、彼らも招きました。
6彼らが来た時、サムエルはそのうちの一人、エリアブをひと目見るなり、「この人こそ、主がお選びになった人に違いない」と思いました。 7しかし、主は言いました。「容貌や背の高さで判断してはいけない。彼ではない。わたしの選び方は、あなたの選び方とは違う。人は外見によって判断するが、わたしは心と思いを見るからだ。」
8次はアビナダブが呼ばれ、サムエルの前に進み出ました。しかし、「主は彼も選んでおられない」とサムエルは言いました。 9続いてシャマが呼ばれましたが、主からは、「彼もわたしの目にかなわない」という返事しかありませんでした。同様にして、エッサイの七人の息子がサムエルの前に立ちましたが、みな主に選ばれませんでした。 10-11サムエルはエッサイに言いました。「どうも主は、この息子さんたちのだれをも選んでおられないらしい。もうほかに息子さんはいないのですか。」
「いいえ、まだ末の子がおります。今、野で羊の番をしておりますが。」
「すぐ呼びにやってください。その子が来るまで、食事は始めませんから。」
12エッサイはすぐに彼を迎えにやりました。連れて来られたのは、見るからに健康そうで、きれいな目をした少年でした。その時、「この者だ。彼に油を注ぎなさい」と、主の声がありました。 13サムエルは、その少年ダビデを兄弟たちの真ん中に立たせて、持って来たオリーブ油を取り、彼の頭に注ぎました。すると、主の霊がダビデに下り、その日から彼には卓越した力が与えられたのです。こののち、サムエルはラマへ帰って行きました。
サウルに仕えるダビデ
14一方、主の霊はサウルから離れ、主が代わりに災いの霊を送り込まれたので、彼はいつも気が滅入り、何かにおびえるようになりました。 15-16そこで家臣たちがサウルに治療法を進言しました。「災いの霊に苦しめられる時には、竪琴の音色が一番です。上手な弾き手を探してまいりましょう。美しい調べが心を静めてくれます。きっと晴れ晴れとしたご気分におなりでしょう。」
17「そうだな。さっそく弾き手を見つけてまいれ。」
18その時、家臣の一人が申し出ました。「ベツレヘムにいい若者がいます。私が会ったのはエッサイという人の息子ですが、竪琴を弾かせたら、それはもう天下一品です。りっぱな戦士で勇敢ですし、分別もございます。なおすばらしいことに、彼には主がついておられるのです。」
19サウルは乗り気になり、使いをエッサイのもとへ送って、「あなたの息子で、羊飼いをしているというダビデをよこしてくれ」と頼みました。 20エッサイは要請に応じて、ダビデばかりか、子やぎ一頭と、パンやぶどう酒を積んだろば一頭とを献上しました。 21ダビデをひと目見たとたん、サウルは感嘆の声をもらし、たいそう気に入りました。こうしてダビデは、サウルのそば近くに取り立てられたのです。 22サウルはエッサイのところに人をやり、「ダビデが気に入ったので手もとに置きたい」と伝えました。 23神からの霊がサウルをさいなむ時、ダビデが竪琴を弾くと、災いの霊が離れ、サウルは気分がよくなるのでした。
1And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons. 2And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.16.2 with thee: Heb. in thine hand 3And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee. 4And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Beth-lehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?16.4 coming: Heb. meeting 5And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6¶ And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him.16.6 Eliab: called Elihu 7But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.16.7 outward…: Heb. eyes 8Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 9Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.16.9 Shammah: Shimeah, also called, Shimma 10Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. 11And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.16.11 down: Heb. round 12And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
14¶ But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.16.14 troubled: or, terrified 15And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. 16Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. 17And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. 18Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.16.18 matters: or, speech
19¶ Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep. 20And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul. 21And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer. 22And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight. 23And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
