王となったサウル
1さて、アモン人ナハシュが軍を率いて、イスラエル人の町ヤベシュ・ギルアデに迫りました。ヤベシュの人々は講和を求め、「どうか、お助けください。あなたがたにお仕えしますから」とすがりました。 2ナハシュの答えは情け容赦のないものでした。「よし、わかった。ただし、一つ条件がある。全イスラエルへの見せしめに、おまえたち一人一人の右目をえぐり取らせてもらおう。」
3なんということでしょう。ヤベシュの長老たちは困りました。「七日間の猶予を下さい。その間に、だれも助けに来てくれなければ、お申し出に従うまでです。」
4使者がサウルの住むギブアの町に駆けつけ、苦境を訴えると、だれもが声を上げて泣きだしました。
5そこへ、畑を耕しに行っていたサウルが戻って来て、「いったい、どうしたのだ。なぜ、みんな泣いているのか」と尋ねました。人々はヤベシュからの知らせを伝えました。 6その時、神の霊が激しくサウルに下ったのです。サウルは満身を怒りに震わせ、 7二頭の雄牛を捕まえるや、それを切り裂き、使者に託してイスラエル中に送りました。そして、「サウルとサムエルに従って戦うことを拒む者の雄牛は、このようにされる」と言い送ったのです。主が人々にサウルの怒りを恐れさせたのか、みな、いっせいに集まって来ました。 8ベゼクでその数を調べると、イスラエルから三十万人、さらにユダから三万人が加わったことがわかりました。
9そこでサウルは、使者をヤベシュ・ギルアデに送り帰し、「明日の昼過ぎまでに助けに行く」と告げさせたのです。この知らせに、どれほど町中が喜びにわき立ったことでしょう。 10ヤベシュの人々は、敵にこう通告しました。「降伏いたします。明日、あなたがたのところへまいりますから、どうぞお気のすむようになさってください。」
11翌朝早く、サウルはヤベシュ・ギルアデに駆けつけ、全軍を三隊に分けてアモン人を急襲し、午前中にほとんど全員を打ち殺してしまいました。残った者たちも散り散りになり、二人の者が共に残ることさえありませんでした。
12その時、人々はサムエルに言いました。「サウルなどわれわれの王ではないと言った者たちはどこでしょうか。引っぱり出してください。息の根を止めてやります。」
13しかし、サウルは答えました。「今日はだめだ。この日、主はイスラエルを救ってくださったのだから、だれをも殺してはならない。」
14続いて、サムエルが呼びかけました。「さあ、ギルガルへ行こう。サウルがわれわれの王であることを、改めて確認するのだ。」
15人々はこぞってギルガルへ行き、主の前でサウルを王として立てました。それから、主に和解のいけにえをささげ、共に喜び合ったのです。

4¶ Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.
5And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. 6And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. 7And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.11.7 with…: Heb. as one man 8And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.11.9 help: or, deliverance 10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you. 11And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
12¶ And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death. 13And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel. 14Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there. 15And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
