1しかし、次の点に心をとめてください。ある父親が、小さな子どもに莫大な財産を残して死んだとします。その場合、相続人である子どもは父の全財産の持ち主ではあっても、大きくなるまで、奴隷とほとんど変わらない立場にあります。 2つまり、父の定めた年齢に達するまでは、後見人や管理者に従う義務があるのです。
律法から自由に
3キリストが来られるまでは、私たちもそれとよく似た立場にありました。ユダヤ教の戒律や規則によって救われると考えて、その奴隷となっていたのです。 4しかし、定めの時が来ると、神様は自分のひとり子を、一人の女から生まれさせ、ユダヤ人として律法の下にお遣わしになりました。 5それは、律法の奴隷になっていた私たちを買い戻して自由の身とするためであり、神の子どもとして迎えてくださるためなのです。 6このように神様は、私たちの心に、神の子の御霊を送ってくださいました。それで今、私たちは神の子どもとして、神を「お父さん」とお呼びできるのです。 7あなたがたも私たちも、もはや奴隷ではありません。神の子どもなのです。子どもであるからには、神の持っておられるものはすべて私たちのものです。それが神のご計画だからです。
8ガラテヤの人たち。あなたがた外国人は、神を知らなかった時、実際には存在しない「神々」と呼ばれているものの奴隷でした。 9ところが今は、神を知っているのに〔というより、むしろ神に知られているのに〕、どうして、もとの状態に逆戻りしたがるのですか。あの貧弱で、無力で、役立たずの教えの奴隷に逆戻りしようとするのですか。 10あなたがたは、ある特定の日や月や季節や年についての定めを守り、それで神を喜ばせようとしています。 11そんなあなたがたが、気がかりでなりません。私があれほど、あなたがたのために一生懸命尽くしてきたのは、全部むだだったのでしょうか。
パウロの嘆き
12愛する皆さん。この点について、どうか私と同じ考えでいてください。私が初めて福音を伝えた時、あなたがたは私を軽蔑したりはしませんでした。 13福音を伝えるきっかけとなったのは、私が病気になったためで、 14その病気は人に不快感を与えるものであったにもかかわらず、あなたがたは、私を拒んだり、追い返したりしませんでした。それどころか、まるで天使かキリスト・イエスであるかのように迎え入れ、気づかってくれました。 15あの時、お互いに味わった幸福感はどこに行ってしまったのでしょう。あなたがたは、私を助けるためなら、自分の目をえぐり出してもかまわないとさえ思ってくれたではありませんか。 16それが今、真理を告げたために、私はあなたがたを敵に回したのでしょうか。 17一生懸命あなたがたに取り入っている偽教師たちは、ほんとうに、あなたがたのためを思っているのではありません。ただ、もっと自分たちの取り巻きをふやすために、私たちから人々を引き離そうとしているだけです。 18正しい動機と真実な心から親切にするなら、何も文句はありません。私がその場にいる時だけでなく、いない時にも、そんな態度を示してくれるなら、なおさらすばらしいことですから。
19ああ、私の子どもたち。私はどんなに心配していることか。あなたがたがキリストに完全に支配される時をひたすら待ちながら、生まれて来る子どもを待つ母親のような苦しみを、もう一度味わっているのです。 20今あなたがたのそばにいられたら、そして、こんな言い方をしなくてすんだらと、どんなにか願っています。これほど離れていては、正直言って、なすすべがないといった感じです。
21律法を守らなければ救われない、と考えている皆さん。私のことばに耳を傾けてください。どうして律法のほんとうの意義を理解しないのですか。 22アブラハムには二人の子どもがあって、一人は奴隷である妻から生まれ、もう一人は自由人である妻から生まれたと書いてあります。 23奴隷である妻の子どもの誕生については、取り立てて変わった点はありませんでした。しかし自由人である妻の子どもの場合は、まずその誕生に関して、特別な神の約束が先行し、それから生まれたのです。
24-25このことは、神様が人間を助けるために開かれた二つの道を示しています。一つは、律法を示して、それを守るようにとお命じになった道です。神様は、シナイ山でこの道をお示しになりました。その時、モーセに「十戒」をお与えになったのです。アラビヤ人はこのシナイ山を、「ハガル山」と呼んでいます。ここでアブラハムの奴隷である妻ハガルは、戒めに従うことによって神に喜ばれようとする生き方の象徴、ユダヤ人の母なる都エルサレムを表しています。そして、この生き方に従うユダヤ人は、すべてハガルが産んだ奴隷の子どもなのです。 26しかし、私たちの母なる都は天にあるエルサレムで、それは律法に属していません。 27イザヤの次の預言は、このことを言おうとしたのです。
「喜べ、子のいない女よ。
喜びの声をあげよ、子を産んだことのない女よ。
あなたに多くの子を、
女奴隷の子より多くを授けよう。」（イザヤ54・1）
28愛する皆さん。あなたがたも私も、イサクと同じ、神の約束に基づく子どもです。 29約束の子イサクは、奴隷である妻の子イシュマエルにいじめられました。とすれば、聖霊によって生まれた私たちが、律法を守るように強要する人々から迫害されるのもうなずけます。
30しかし聖書には、神様がアブラハムにこう言われたと記されています。「奴隷である妻と子どもを追い出せ。その女の子どもは、自由人である妻の子どもといっしょに、アブラハムの跡継ぎにはなれない。」（創世21・10、12） 31愛する皆さん。私たちは、律法に縛られた奴隷の子どもではありません。信仰によって神に受け入れられる、自由の女の子どもです。
1Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; 2But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. 3Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: 4But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. 6And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 7Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
8Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods. 9But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? 10Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. 11I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
12Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all. 13Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first. 14And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. 15Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me. 16Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? 17They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them. 18But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you. 19My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you, 20I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
21Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? 22For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. 23But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. 24Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. 25For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. 26But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. 27For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. 28Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. 29But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. 30Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. 31So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
