偽りの宗教
1主はエレミヤに、次のように語りました。 2「神殿の入口へ行き、そこで人々にこう言いなさい。神のことばを聞け。ここで礼拝している者はみな、耳を傾けよ。 3天の軍勢の主であるイスラエルの神は、こう言う。今からでも遅くはない。悪の道を離れさえすれば、おまえたちをこの地に住まわせよう。 4神殿のあるエルサレムが破壊されるのを、神が黙って見ているはずはないと言う者たちのことばにだまされてはならない。 5次の条件を満たさなければ、ここにいることはできない。悪い思いと行いを捨て、人には公平に接し、 6みなしご、やもめ、外国人をだましたりしないこと。人殺しをやめること。偶像を拝んで自分を傷つけるような愚かなまねはしないこと。 7以上の条件にかなったとき、先祖に永遠の相続地として与えたこの地に住むことができる。
8神殿があるから災いに会うはずはない、と考えて、自分をあざむいてはならない。 9おまえたちは平気で盗み、人を殺し、姦淫の罪を犯し、うそをつき、バアルや今まで知らなかった神々を拝んでいる。 10しかも、わたしの宮に入ってわたしの前に立ち、『われわれは救われています』と言いながら悪事をくり返すことができると、本気で考えているのか。 11わたしの宮は強盗の巣なのか。ありとあらゆる悪がはびこっていて、目も当てられない。
12わたしが初めにわたしの名にふさわしい町としたシロへ行きなさい。そこで、イスラエル人の悪のために、わたしがどんなことをしたかをよく見て来なさい。 13-14おまえたちの行ったもろもろの悪事のために、ここでも同じことをする。わたしは何度も語りかけ、しきりに呼び続けたのに、おまえたちは聞こうともせず、答えようともしなかった。だからシロでしたように、この神殿を壊す。おまえたちの心の拠り所である、わたしの名で呼ばれるこの神殿、おまえたちと先祖に与えたこの場所をだ。 15しかもおまえたちを、おまえたちの兄弟エフライム人（北のイスラエル王国）のように、捕虜として外国に追い払う。
16エレミヤよ、二度とこの国の民のために祈ってはならない。彼らのために泣くことも、彼らを助けるようにと、わたしに祈ったり哀願したりしてはならない。わたしは耳をふさぐからだ。 17彼らがユダの町々、エルサレムの通りで何をしているか、知らないとでも思うのか。 18わたしがこんなに怒っているのは、もっともなことではないか。子どもはたきぎを集め、父親は火をたき、女は粉をこね、愛の女神『天の女王』をはじめ、偶像の神々に供えるパン菓子を作っている。 19彼らが傷つけているのは、はたしてこのわたしだろうか。自分を傷つけ、自分の恥をさらしているだけではないのか。」 20だから、神である主はこう宣言します。「わたしは激しい怒りをこの地に注ぐ。人も家畜も木も穀物も、どんなことをしても消えないわたしの怒りの火によって焼き尽くされる。」
21イスラエルの神である天の軍勢の主は、こう命じます。「おまえたちの供え物といけにえを捨てなさい。 22わたしがおまえたちの先祖をエジプトから連れ出した時、彼らに求めたのは供え物やいけにえではなかった。わたしの戒めの真意は、そんなものではなかった。 23わたしの真意はこうだ。わたしに従いさえすれば、わたしはおまえたちの神となり、おまえたちはわたしの民となる。わたしの命令どおりにしさえすれば、何もかもうまくいく。 24ところが、彼らはわたしの言いつけを聞こうとせず、頑固で悪い思いをもって、したいほうだいのことをした。前進するどころか後退した。 25おまえたちの先祖がエジプトを出た日から今日に至るまで、わたしは毎日、預言者を彼らのもとに送り出した。 26ところがどうだ。彼らは耳を傾けるどころか、聞こうとするそぶりさえ見せなかった。先祖よりもさらに手のつけようもないくらいかたくなで反抗心が強く悪質だ。 27わたしがこれからすることを、一から十まで知らせても、彼らが聞くと思ってはならない。大声で警告しても、反応を示すと甘く考えてはならない。 28彼らに言ってやるのだ。おまえたちは、神である主に従うことを拒み、教えられることを拒む民だ。ひどい偽りの生活を続けている。
虐殺の谷
29エルサレムよ、深く恥じて頭をそり、
ひとり山の上で泣け。
わたしは憤って、この民を退け、捨てたからだ。
30それは、ユダの民がわたしの目の前で罪を犯したからだ。彼らはわたしの神殿に偶像を持ち込み、神殿を汚した。 31ベン・ヒノムの谷にトフェテという名の祭壇を築き、そこで、幼い息子や娘を神々へのいけにえとして焼き殺している。これは、わたしが思いもよらず、まして命じた覚えなど全くない恐ろしい行為だ。 32だから、この谷が『トフェテ』でも『ベン・ヒノムの谷』でもなく、『虐殺の谷』と呼ばれる時がくる。あまりにも多くの者が殺され、墓を作る場所がなくなり、遺体をこの谷に投げ捨てるようになるからだ。 33遺体は鳥や獣のえじきになるが、これを追い払う者は一人もいない。 34わたしはエルサレムとユダの町々から、楽しそうな歌声や笑い声を消し、花婿や花嫁のはずんだ声を絶やす。この国は廃墟となる。」
False religion worthless
1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2‘Stand at the gate of the Lord’s house and there proclaim this message:
‘ “Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord. 3This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place. 4Do not trust in deceptive words and say, ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!’ 5If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, 6if you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, 7then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave to your ancestors for ever and ever. 8But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless.
9‘ “Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury,7:9 Or and swear by false gods burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, 10and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, ‘We are safe’ – safe to do all these detestable things? 11Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declares the Lord.
12‘ “Go now to the place in Shiloh where I first made a dwelling for my Name, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel. 13While you were doing all these things, declares the Lord, I spoke to you again and again, but you did not listen; I called you, but you did not answer. 14Therefore, what I did to Shiloh I will now do to the house that bears my Name, the temple you trust in, the place I gave to you and your ancestors. 15I will thrust you from my presence, just as I did all your fellow Israelites, the people of Ephraim.”
16‘So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them; do not plead with me, for I will not listen to you. 17Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. They pour out drink offerings to other gods to arouse my anger. 19But am I the one they are provoking? declares the Lord. Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame?
20‘ “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place – on man and beast, on the trees of the field and on the crops of your land – and it will burn and not be quenched.
21‘ “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices and eat the meat yourselves! 22For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices, 23but I gave them this command: obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you. 24But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. They went backwards and not forwards. 25From the time your ancestors left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again I sent you my servants the prophets. 26But they did not listen to me or pay attention. They were stiff-necked and did more evil than their ancestors.”
27‘When you tell them all this, they will not listen to you; when you call to them, they will not answer. 28Therefore say to them, “This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction. Truth has perished; it has vanished from their lips.
29‘ “Cut off your hair and throw it away; take up a lament on the barren heights, for the Lord has rejected and abandoned this generation that is under his wrath.
The valley of slaughter
30‘ “The people of Judah have done evil in my eyes, declares the Lord. They have set up their detestable idols in the house that bears my Name and have defiled it. 31They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire – something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind. 32So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room. 33Then the carcasses of this people will become food for the birds and the wild animals, and there will be no-one to frighten them away. 34I will bring an end to the sounds of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, for the land will become desolate.
