見張り役としての責任
1再び主からのことばがありました。
2「人の子よ、あなたの同胞に告げよ。わたしがある国に軍隊を差し向けると、その国では見張りを立て、 3敵軍の来襲を見て警報を鳴らす。 4その時、警報を聞き流して死ぬ者がいても自業自得だ。 5警告を聞いてもそれに従わなかったのだから、非は彼にある。警告に従っていたら、助かっただろう。 6だが、見張り役が敵の来襲を見ながら警報を鳴らさず、警告もしなかったなら、人々の死の責任は見張り役にある。人々は自分の罪のために死ぬが、その死の責任は見張り役にある。わたしはその責任を問う。
7人の子よ、あなたにも言う。わたしはあなたをイスラエルの見張り役とした。だから、わたしの語ることに耳を傾け、わたしに代わって彼らに警告せよ。 8わたしが悪者に向かって、『悪者よ。おまえは必ず死ぬ』と言うとき、あなたがそれを伝えなければ、彼は悔い改めることをせず、その罪のために死んでいく。ただし、わたしはその死の責任をあなたに問う。 9あなたが悪者に悔い改めるように警告しても、それを聞かないなら、彼は自分の罪のために死ぬ。しかし、あなたには何の責任もない。
10イスラエルは、『自分たちの犯した罪が重くのしかかって、私たちはすっかりやせ衰えた。どうして生きていられよう』と嘆いている。 11彼らに告げなさい。神である主がこう語る、と。わたしは生きている。わたしは悪者どもの死を喜ばない。それどころか、悪者が悪の道から悔い改めて生きるようになることを願っている。さあ帰って来なさい。悪の道から離れ、立ち返るのだ。ああ、イスラエルよ。なぜ、そんなにも死にたがるのか。
12たとえ正しい行いをしていた人でも、罪を犯すなら、その人は救われない。どんな悪者も、その人が悔い改めて罪から身を引くなら、滅ぼされることはない。 13わたしは『正しい人は生きる』と言った。しかし、今まで良いことをしてきたから大目に見てもらえるだろうと罪を犯す人には、以前の正しい行いは何の役にも立たない。わたしは、その罪のゆえに彼を滅ぼす。 14また、わたしから『必ず死ぬ』と言われた悪者が、罪から身を引いて立ち返り、きよく正しいことを行うなら、 15すなわち、質草を返し、盗んだ物を償い、正しい道を歩んで悪を行わないなら、彼は必ず生きる。決して死ぬことはない。 16もう二度と、過去の罪によって責められることはない。正しい道に立ち返ったから、彼は必ず生きるのだ。
17それでもイスラエルの民は、『主は公正ではない』と不平を鳴らす。問題は、そう言っている彼ら自身が正しくないことだ。 18もう一度言う。正しい人でも、悪の道に入るなら、必ず死ぬ。 19悪者でも、悪から身を引いて、きよく正しいことを行うなら、必ず生きる。 20おまえたちは今も、『主は公正ではない』と非難している。わたしは、おまえたち一人一人を、その行いに従ってさばく。」
エルサレム陥落の知らせ
21私たちが捕囚となってから十一年目の第十の月の五日に、エルサレムから逃げて来た者たちの一人が、「エルサレムが陥落した」と私に告げました。 22その前夜、主の御手が私の上に置かれ、私を元気に立ち上がらせてくれました。それで、彼が到着した時には、再び語ることができるようにされていました。
23そののち、次のような主のことばがありました。 24「人の子よ。廃墟と化したユダの町々に残って散り散りに住んでいる者たちは、『アブラハムはたった一人で、この地を所有していた。これだけの者がいれば、この地を取り返せないはずはない』と息まいている。」 25しかし、神である主はこう語ります。「おまえたちは悪いことをしているのだから、何の力もない。血がついたままの肉を食べ、偶像を礼拝し、人を殺している。それでも、わたしがその地を与えると思っているのか。 26人を殺す者、偶像礼拝者、姦淫を行う者であるおまえたちが、この地を所有できるだろうか。」 27彼らに告げよ、と主は語ります。「わたしは生きている。あの廃墟に住んでいる者は必ず剣に倒れる。原野に住んでいる者は野獣のえじきとなり、要害やほら穴にいる者は疫病にかかって死ぬ。 28わたしはその地を荒廃させ、彼らの高慢の鼻をへし折り、その力にとどめを刺す。イスラエルの山地にある村々は荒れはて、通る人もいなくなる。 29わたしが彼らの罪のゆえにその地を滅ぼす時、彼らはわたしが主であることを知る。
30人の子よ。あなたの同胞は、あなたの陰口を言っている。家や戸口で、ひそひそ話している。『主がどんなことを言っているか、彼に聞いて楽しもう』と。 31彼らはもっともらしい顔をしてやって来る。そして、あなたの前に座って聞くだろう。だが、わたしの言うとおりにする気はさらさらない。口では、いかにも調子よく、わたしを愛しているようなことを言うが、心は金銭欲でいっぱいだ。 32彼らにとってあなたは、すてきな声で恋の歌を歌い、上手に楽器を奏でる人のようなものだ。ただ聞くのを楽しむだけで、言われたことを心に留めようとはしない。 33しかし、先に語った恐ろしいことが全部起こると、それは必ず起こるが、その時になって初めて、彼らは自分たちの間に預言者がいたことを知る。」
Renewal of Ezekiel’s Call as Watchman
1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Son of man, speak to your people and say to them: ‘When I bring the sword against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman, 3and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet to warn the people, 4then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not heed the warning and the sword comes and takes their life, their blood will be on their own head. 5Since they heard the sound of the trumpet but did not heed the warning, their blood will be on their own head. If they had heeded the warning, they would have saved themselves. 6But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.’
7“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 8When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for33:8 Or in; also in verse 9 their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 9But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so, they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved.
10“Son of man, say to the Israelites, ‘This is what you are saying: “Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away because of33:10 Or away in them. How then can we live?” ’ 11Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?’
12“Therefore, son of man, say to your people, ‘If someone who is righteous disobeys, that person’s former righteousness will count for nothing. And if someone who is wicked repents, that person’s former wickedness will not bring condemnation. The righteous person who sins will not be allowed to live even though they were formerly righteous.’ 13If I tell a righteous person that they will surely live, but then they trust in their righteousness and do evil, none of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered; they will die for the evil they have done. 14And if I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ but they then turn away from their sin and do what is just and right— 15if they give back what they took in pledge for a loan, return what they have stolen, follow the decrees that give life, and do no evil—that person will surely live; they will not die. 16None of the sins that person has committed will be remembered against them. They have done what is just and right; they will surely live.
17“Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But it is their way that is not just. 18If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil, they will die for it. 19And if a wicked person turns away from their wickedness and does what is just and right, they will live by doing so. 20Yet you Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But I will judge each of you according to your own ways.”
Jerusalem’s Fall Explained
21In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month on the fifth day, a man who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has fallen!” 22Now the evening before the man arrived, the hand of the Lord was on me, and he opened my mouth before the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened and I was no longer silent.
23Then the word of the Lord came to me: 24“Son of man, the people living in those ruins in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he possessed the land. But we are many; surely the land has been given to us as our possession.’ 25Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you eat meat with the blood still in it and look to your idols and shed blood, should you then possess the land? 26You rely on your sword, you do detestable things, and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife. Should you then possess the land?’
27“Say this to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague. 28I will make the land a desolate waste, and her proud strength will come to an end, and the mountains of Israel will become desolate so that no one will cross them. 29Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolate waste because of all the detestable things they have done.’
30“As for you, son of man, your people are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.’ 31My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. 32Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.
33“When all this comes true—and it surely will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
