De boodschap van de engel van de Here
1In de achtste maand van koning Dariusʼ tweede regeringsjaar ontving de profeet Zacharia, de zoon van Berechja en kleinzoon van Iddo, deze boodschap van de Here.
2‘De Here is toornig geweest op uw voorouders. 3Maar tegen u zegt Hij: “Als u bij Mij terugkomt, zal Ik ook bij u terugkomen.” 4Wees niet zoals uw voorouders! De vroegere profeten zeiden tegen hen: “De Here van de hemelse legers zegt dat u moet ophouden met uw kwade praktijken,” maar zij luisterden niet. Zij bekommerden zich niet om Mij. 5Wat is er van uw voorouders en hun profeten geworden? 6Maar mijn woord houdt eeuwig stand! De woorden die Ik door mijn profeten liet verkondigen, hebben uw voorouders ten slotte toch bereikt, waarna zij tot inkeer kwamen. Toen moesten zij erkennen: “De Here van de hemelse legers had ons nog zo gewaarschuwd, maar moest uiteindelijk zijn dreigementen toch uitvoeren. Wij kregen wat wij verdienden.” ’
7Op de vierentwintigste dag van de elfde maand, de maand Sebat, nog steeds in het tweede regeringsjaar van koning Darius, ontving de profeet Zacharia opnieuw een boodschap van de Here. Deze keer kwam de boodschap ʼs nachts in de vorm van een visioen: 8ik zag een man op een rood paard. Hij stond tussen de mirtestruiken in een rivierdal en achter hem stonden andere paarden, rode, bruine en witte. 9Een engel stond naast mij en ik vroeg hem: ‘Waarvoor zijn al die paarden daar, mijn heer?’ ‘Ik zal het u vertellen,’ zei hij. 10De man die tussen de mirtestruiken stond, zei: ‘De Here heeft hen uitgestuurd om voor Hem de hele aarde te verkennen.’ 11Toen brachten de andere ruiters de engel van de Here verslag uit van hun tocht: ‘Wij hebben de hele aarde verkend en het is overal volkomen rustig.’ 12Bij het horen hiervan zei de engel van de Here: ‘Here van de hemelse legers, U bent nu al zeventig jaar toornig geweest op Jeruzalem en de andere steden in Juda. Hoelang zal het nog duren voordat U Zich hun lot aantrekt en weer medelijden toont?’ 13De Here antwoordde de engel die naast mij stond met vriendelijke, troostrijke woorden.
14Toen zei de engel tegen mij: ‘Predik dit namens de Here van de hemelse legers: “Denkt u dat het Mij niets kan schelen wat er met Jeruzalem en Juda is gebeurd? Ik waak over hen! 15Ik ben in grote woede ontstoken tegen de heidense volken die zo zelfverzekerd zijn. Ik was niet erg kwaad op mijn volk, maar die volken hebben hen buitensporig zwaar gestraft. 16Daarom,” zegt de Here, “zal Ik medelijden hebben en terugkeren naar Jeruzalem. Mijn tempel zal worden herbouwd en ook Jeruzalem zal weer herrijzen. 17Herhaal het nog eens: de Here van de hemelse legers belooft dat de steden van Israël zullen overvloeien van welvaart. En de Here zal Jeruzalem weer troosten en zegenen en in haar wonen.” ’
18Toen keek ik op en zag vier horens. 19‘Wat betekent dat?’ vroeg ik de engel. Hij antwoordde: ‘Zij vertegenwoordigen de vier wereldmachten die Juda, Israël en Jeruzalem hebben verstrooid.’ 20Vervolgens liet de Here mij vier smeden zien. 21‘Wat komen die mannen doen?’ vroeg ik. De engel antwoordde: ‘Zij zijn gekomen om de vier horens die de bevolking van Juda zo volkomen hebben uiteengeslagen, vast te grijpen. Zij zullen hen stukslaan op het aambeeld en weggooien.’

7¶ Upon the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Sebat, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying, 8I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses, speckled, and white.1.8 speckled: or, bay 9Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be. 10And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth. 11And they answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.
12¶ Then the angel of the LORD answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years? 13And the LORD answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words. 14So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy. 15And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction. 16Therefore thus saith the LORD; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the LORD of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem. 17Cry yet, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the LORD shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.1.17 prosperity: Heb. good
18¶ Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns. 19And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem. 20And the LORD shewed me four carpenters. 21Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.
