Ruth benadert Boaz
1Enige tijd later zei Naomi tegen Ruth: ‘Kind, wordt het niet eens tijd dat ik iemand zoek met wie je kunt hertrouwen? 2Boaz is zo vriendelijk geweest jou bij hem te laten werken en bovendien is hij naaste familie van ons. Luister, ik weet dat hij vanavond gerst gaat wannen op de dorsvloer. 3Doe nu wat ik je zeg: neem een bad, doe wat parfum op, trek je mooiste kleren aan en ga naar de dorsvloer. Maar laat je niet zien voordat hij klaar is met eten. 4Let goed op waar hij gaat slapen. Ga er dan zachtjes naar toe, sla de deken aan het voeteneinde op en ga daar liggen. Hij zal je dan wel zeggen wat je moet doen.’ 5‘Goed, ik zal doen wat u hebt gezegd,’ antwoordde Ruth.
6Die avond ging zij naar de dorsvloer en deed precies wat haar schoonmoeder had gezegd. 7Toen Boaz klaar was met eten, ging hij tevreden liggen slapen naast een korenhoop. Zachtjes sloop Ruth naar hem toe, lichtte de deken van zijn voeten op en ging daar liggen. 8Rond middernacht schrok Boaz plotseling wakker. Hij draaide zich om en zag een vrouw aan zijn voeten liggen! 9‘Wie ben je?’ vroeg hij. ‘Ik ben het, meneer, Ruth,’ antwoordde ze. ‘Wilt u met mij trouwen? U bent immers onze naaste bloedverwant.’ 10‘De Here zal je zegenen,’ riep hij uit. ‘Hiermee toon je nog meer trouw dan je voorheen al aan je overleden man getoond hebt. Je hebt niet omgekeken naar jongere mannen, of ze nu arm waren of rijk. 11Welnu Ruth, maak je geen zorgen. Ik zal doen wat je vraagt, want iedereen in de stad weet wat een bijzondere vrouw jij bent. 12Er is echter één probleem. Het klopt dat ik een naaste bloedverwant van je ben, maar er is iemand anders die nog nauwer aan je verwant is dan ik. 13Blijf vannacht hier, dan ga ik morgenochtend met hem praten. Als híj met je wil trouwen, moet je dat doen. Wil hij dat niet, dan word je mijn vrouw. Dat zweer ik bij de naam van de Here. Blijf hier maar liggen tot de ochtend.’ 14Zo bleef zij aan zijn voeteneinde liggen. Nog voor het licht werd stond ze op, zodat niemand haar kon herkennen, want hij had haar gezegd: ‘Niemand mag weten dat jij op de dorsvloer bent geweest.’ 15‘Houd je omslagdoek eens op,’ zei hij. Toen zij dat deed, goot hij er zes maten gerst in die hij haar meegaf. Daarna ging hij naar de stad.
16‘Hoe is het gegaan?’ vroeg Naomi toen zij thuis kwam. Ruth vertelde wat hij voor haar gedaan had en ze gaf Naomi de gerst die zij had meegekregen. Ze zei: 17‘Boaz zei dat ik niet met lege handen thuis mocht komen.’ 18Toen zei Naomi tegen haar: ‘Wacht nu maar rustig af tot we horen wat er gebeurt, want Boaz zal niet rusten voordat dit is geregeld. Hij maakt het vandaag nog in orde.’
1Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee? 2And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor. 3Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking. 4And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.3.4 uncover: or, lift up the clothes that are on 5And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.
6¶ And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law bade her. 7And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.
8¶ And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.3.8 turned: or, took hold on 9And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.3.9 a near…: or, one that hath right to redeem 10And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich. 11And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.3.11 city: Heb. gate 12And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I. 13Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.
14¶ And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor. 15Also he said, Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city.3.15 vail: or, sheet, or, apron 16And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her. 17And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law. 18Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.
