1Een psalm van Asaf.
O God, ongelovigen zijn bij ons binnengedrongen
en hebben uw heiligdom, de tempel, onteerd.
Zij hebben Jeruzalem vernield.
2De dode lichamen van uw dienaren
hebben zij als voedsel aan de vogels gegeven.
De wilde dieren hebben de lijken
van uw volgelingen te eten gekregen.
3Zij hebben hun bloed als water laten weglopen rondom Jeruzalem.
Niemand heeft hen begraven.
4De omwonenden spreken smalend over ons.
Onze buren bespotten ons en maken ons belachelijk.
5Hoelang moet dit nog duren, Here?
Hoelang zal uw toorn op ons blijven?
Uw jaloezie branden als een vuur?
6Vier uw toorn maar bot op de volken die U niet willen kennen,
over de landen waar men U niet eert en aanroept.
7Die hebben uw volk onder de voet gelopen
en Jeruzalem verwoest.
8Laat de zonden van onze voorouders
niet op onze hoofden neerkomen,
kom naar ons toe met uw vergeving en liefde,
wij zijn zo zwak geworden.
9O God die ons bevrijdt,
help ons toch ter wille van U Zelf.
Verlos ons
en doe onze zonden weg ter wille van uw naam.
10Dan kunnen de heidenen tenminste niet zeggen:
waar blijft hun God nu?
Toon ons hoe U wraak neemt op deze heidenen
wegens de dood van uw volgelingen.
11Luister naar het zuchten van de gevangenen,
red hen die ten dode zijn opgeschreven,
red hen door uw sterke arm.
12Straf de buurlanden zevenvoudig
voor de spot die zij met U dreven, Here.
13En wij—uw volk, dat door U wordt geleid—
zullen U altijd loven en prijzen.
Onze kinderen en kleinkinderen
zullen spreken over uw grootheid.

2The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.
3Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury them.
4We are become a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.
5How long, LORD? wilt thou be angry for ever? shall thy jealousy burn like fire?
6Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.
7For they have devoured Jacob, and laid waste his dwelling place.
8O remember not against us former iniquities: let thy tender mercies speedily prevent us: for we are brought very low.79.8 former…: or, the iniquities of them that were before us
9Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name’s sake.
10Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is their God? let him be known among the heathen in our sight by the revenging of the blood of thy servants which is shed.79.10 revenging: Heb. vengeance
