1Een gebed van David.
Luister toch, Here,
want ik vraag uw oordeel over een eerlijke zaak.
Schenk mij uw aandacht
en luister naar mijn smeekgebed.
Ik kom bij U met een volkomen eerlijk hart
en spreek oprecht tot U.
2Spreek uw oordeel over mij uit,
want U weet wat goed en rechtvaardig is.
3Beoordeel mijn geweten,
U kunt dat zelfs ʼs nachts doen.
Test mij maar.
U zult niets verkeerds bij mij vinden,
waar ik ook over spreek.
4Zoals U mij hebt geleerd,
ben ik ook nooit op pad gegaan met zondaars.
Daarvoor heb ik gewaakt.
5Integendeel, ik heb alleen uw weg betreden
en daarop liep ik met vaste tred.
6Maar nu roep ik naar U,
juist naar U, mijn God,
omdat ik weet dat U mij zult antwoorden.
Luister alstublieft!
7Laat ook nu blijken
hoe genadig en liefdevol U bent.
Want U bevrijdt de mensen
die bij U schuilen.
8Bescherm mij
zoals een vader zijn geliefde kind beschermt.
Laat ik mij in uw schaduw mogen verbergen.
9Want de ongelovigen
willen mij de baas worden
en mijn aartsvijanden
dreigen mij in te sluiten.
10De stem van hun geweten
leggen zij het zwijgen op
en ze spreken op arrogante toon.
11Zij zijn overal om mij heen,
waar ik ook ben.
Hun enige bedoeling is
mij te vernietigen.
12Mijn vijand lijkt op een leeuw,
klaar om zijn prooi te bespringen.
Of op een roofdier,
weggedoken in zijn schuilplaats.
13Gaat U hem tegemoet, Here,
en sla hem neer.
Red mijn leven door uw zwaard.
14Sla hen met uw eigen hand, Here,
die mannen van deze wereld,
die buiten dit leven niets meer verwachten.
Geef hun maar wat goed voor hen is.
Laat zelfs hun nageslacht er nog last van hebben.
15Ik wil rechtvaardig blijven
en U altijd kunnen aanzien.
ʼs Morgens wil ik,
denkend aan uw goddelijke heerlijkheid,
blij en dankbaar wakker worden.

4Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.
