De Here is in aantocht
1Troost, o ga mijn volk troosten, zegt uw God. 2Spreek met tederheid tegen Jeruzalem en zeg haar dat de dagen van verdrukking voorbij zijn. Haar zonden zijn vergeven en de Here zal tweemaal zoveel zegeningen geven als zij voor die tijd straf kreeg.
3Luister! Ik hoor de stem van iemand die roept: ‘Baan een weg in de woestijn voor de Here, maak een rechte weg door de wildernis. 4Vul de dalen op en vlak de heuvels af, maak de bochtige paden recht en zorg dat alle oneffenheden vlak worden gemaakt. 5Alle schepselen zullen de glorie van de Here zien.’ De Here heeft gesproken, zo zal het gebeuren. 6De stem zegt: ‘Roep!’ ‘Wat moet ik roepen?’ vraag ik. ‘Roep dat de mens is als gras en dat zijn pracht verwelkt als een veldbloem. 7Het gras verdort en de bloem verwelkt onder de adem van God. En zo gaat het ook met de vergankelijke mens. 8Dor wordt het gras en bloemen verwelken, maar het woord van onze God houdt voor eeuwig stand.’
9Roeper van het goede nieuws, roep vanaf de bergtoppen naar Jeruzalem! Roep maar harder—wees niet bang—en vertel de steden van Juda dat hun God in aantocht is. 10Ja, de Here God komt met macht, Hij zal met strakke hand regeren. Kijk, Hij heeft zijn beloning bij Zich en zijn vergelding gaat voor Hem uit. 11Als een herder zal Hij zijn kudde weiden: Hij zal de lammeren in zijn armen dragen en de ooien voorzichtig leiden. 12Wie hield de oceanen in zijn hand en grensde de hemel af tussen duim en pink? Wie kent het gewicht van de aarde en weegt de heuvels en de bergen? 13Wie adviseert de Geest van de Here, leert Hem iets of geeft Hem raad? 14Heeft Hij ooit iemands raad nodig gehad? Moet Hem worden gezegd wat goed of beter is?
15Nee, want alle volken van de aarde zijn niets vergeleken bij Hem, zij zijn slechts een druppel in een emmer, een stofje op een weegschaal, de eilanden wegen niet meer dan een korreltje zand. 16De wouden van de Libanon kunnen niet genoeg brandstof leveren voor een offer dat groot genoeg is om Hem te eren. En ook de dieren van de Libanon zijn niet genoeg om aan onze God te offeren. 17Volken betekenen niets voor Hem, in zijn ogen zijn zij minder dan niets.
18Hoe kunnen wij God beschrijven? Waarmee kunnen wij Hem vergelijken? 19Met een afgodsbeeld? Een gegoten beeld, overtrokken met goud en met zilveren kettingen om zijn hals? 20Een man die te arm is om zoʼn dure god te kopen, zal een boom opzoeken die niet verrot en daarna iemand huren die er een gezicht in uithakt. En dat is dan zijn god, een god die zelfs niet kan bewegen! 21Weet u het niet? Bent u doof voor de woorden van God, de woorden die Hij uitsprak voordat de geschiedenis van de wereld begon? Hebt u het nooit gehoord en begrepen? 22God troont boven het rond van de aarde. Voor Hem zijn haar bewoners als sprinkhanen. Hij hangt de hemel op als een gordijn en daar maakt Hij zijn tent van. 23Hij veroordeelt de machtigen van de aarde en maakt hen tot nietige wezens. 24Nauwelijks zijn zij geplant en schieten zij wortel in de aarde of Hij blaast hen omver. Zij verdorren en de wind neemt hen mee alsof zij stro zijn. 25‘Met wie wilt u Mij vergelijken? Wie is aan Mij gelijk?’ vraagt de Heilige. 26Kijk omhoog naar de hemel! Wie maakte al deze sterren? Als een herder die zijn schapen leidt, ze bij hun namen roept en telt om te zien of er niet één verdwaald is, zo gaat God om met de sterren en planeten!
27Waarom zegt u dan, Jakob, en overlegt u, Israël: ‘De Here let niet op mij en komt niet op voor mijn recht’? 28Begrijpt u het dan nog niet? Weet u nu nog niet dat de eeuwige God, de schepper van de verste uithoeken van de aarde, nooit moe of lusteloos wordt? Niemand kan de diepten van zijn begrip peilen.
29Machtelozen en vermoeiden maakt Hij sterk, de zwakken geeft Hij kracht. 30-31 Jeugdigen zullen uitgeput raken en de jonge mannen zullen het opgeven. Maar zij die hun hoop op de Here hebben gevestigd, zullen hun krachten weer terugkrijgen. Zij stijgen op met vleugels als van arenden, zij zullen voortsnellen, maar niet moe worden, zij zullen wandelen zonder uitgeput te raken.

27Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God?
28¶ Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. 29He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.40.31 renew: Heb. change
