Waarschuwing tegen valse profeten
1De Here verklaart: ‘Ik zal een ramp brengen over de leiders van mijn volk, de herders van mijn schapen, want zij hebben hen voor wie zij moesten zorgen, vernietigd en uiteengejaagd. 2In plaats van goed voor mijn kudde te zorgen, hebt u haar weggejaagd en naar de ondergang geleid. Daarom zal Ik u straffen voor wat u hebt misdaan,’ zegt de Here, de God van Israël. 3‘Ikzelf zal wat er nog van mijn schapen over is, bijeenhalen uit al de landen waar Ik ze heen gestuurd heb en ze laten terugkeren naar hun weiden, waar ze vruchtbaar zullen zijn en uitgroeien. 4Ik zal herders met verantwoordelijkheidsgevoel over hen aanstellen en zij zullen niet meer bang hoeven te zijn en er zal niemand ontbreken. 5-6 Want er komt een tijd,’ zegt de Here, ‘dat Ik een rechtvaardige koning op Davids troon zal zetten. Hij zal een koning zijn die wijs en rechtvaardig regeert. Door zijn toedoen zal op de hele aarde het recht zegevieren. En dit is zijn naam: De Here onze Gerechtigheid. Wanneer Hij koning is, zal Juda worden gered en Israël in vrede leven. 7In die dagen zullen mensen niet langer een eed afleggen met de woorden: “Zo waar de Here leeft, die zijn volk Israël uit het land Egypte redde,” 8maar zij zullen zeggen: “Zo waar de Here leeft, die de Israëlieten naar hun eigen land terugbracht vanuit alle landen waarheen Hij hen had verbannen.” Dan zullen ze weer in hun eigen land wonen.
9Wat de profeten betreft: mijn hart is gebroken door de valse profeten, die vol bedrog zitten. Ik word angstig wakker en wankel als een dronkaard, want de Here heeft een heilig oordeel over hen uitgesproken. 10Overal in het land wordt echtbreuk gepleegd. Het land treurt, de vloek van God rust erop. De groene weiden liggen er uitgedroogd bij. Iedereen jaagt het kwaad na en zoekt zijn kracht in onrecht. 11Zelfs de priesters en de profeten zijn goddeloos, hier in mijn eigen tempel moet Ik hun wandaden aanzien,’ zegt de Here. 12‘Daarom zullen hun paden donker en glibberig worden, zij zullen worden opgejaagd in de duisternis en ten val komen. Ik zal een ramp over hen brengen en ervoor zorgen dat, als hun tijd gekomen is, zij de schuld voor al hun zonden volledig betalen. 13Ik wist dat de profeten van Samaria ongelooflijk slecht waren, want zij profeteerden in de naam van Baäl en leidden mijn volk Israël naar de zonde, 14maar de profeten van Jeruzalem zijn nog veel slechter! De dingen die zij doen, zijn vreselijk, zij plegen echtbreuk en genieten van oneerlijkheid. Mensen die kwaad doen, moedigen zij aan in plaats van hen van de zonde af te houden. Deze profeten zijn net zo goddeloos als de inwoners van Sodom en Gomorra.’ 15Daarom zegt de Here van de hemelse legers: ‘Ik zal hun bitterheid te eten en vergif te drinken geven. Want door hun schuld is dit land vanuit Jeruzalem overspoeld met goddeloosheid.
16Dit is mijn waarschuwing aan mijn volk,’ zegt de Here van de hemelse legers. ‘Luister niet naar deze valse profeten als zij profeteren, want zij geven u alleen maar valse hoop. Alles wat zij zeggen, verzinnen zij zelf. Zij spreken niet namens Mij! 17Zij zeggen voortdurend tegen de mensen die niets van Mij moeten hebben: “Maak u geen zorgen, alles is in orde.” En tegen hen die leven naar eigen goeddunken: “De Here heeft gezegd dat u geen kwaad zal treffen!” 18Kunt u ook maar een van deze profeten noemen die dicht genoeg bij God leeft om te kunnen horen wat Hij zegt? Heeft ook maar een van hen de moeite genomen naar zijn Woord te luisteren? 19Kijk, de Here stuurt in zijn toorn een razende wervelwind om deze goddeloze mannen weg te vagen. 20De vreselijke toorn van de Here zal pas voorbij zijn wanneer Hij de volledige straf die over hen is uitgesproken, heeft uitgevoerd. Later, als Jeruzalem is gevallen, zult u begrijpen wat Ik bedoel. 21Ik heb deze profeten niet gestuurd, maar toch beweren zij door Mij te zijn gezonden. Ik heb niets tegen hen gezegd, maar toch zeggen zij dat hun woorden de mijne zijn. 22Als zij wel wisten wat Ik besloten had, dan hadden ze mijn volk dat laten weten en het van zijn kwade praktijken afgebracht. 23Ben Ik soms een God die maar op één plaats tegelijk is en die niet van veraf kan zien wat zij uitvoeren? 24Kan iemand zich voor Mij verbergen? Ben Ik niet overal tegelijk, in de hemel en op de aarde?’ zegt de Here. 25‘ “Luister naar de droom die God mij vannacht gaf,” zeggen zij. En vervolgens beginnen zij in mijn naam te liegen. 26Hoelang zullen die leugenachtige profeten nog doorgaan die alleen maar hun eigen verzinsels verkondigen? 27Door het vertellen van deze verzonnen dromen, proberen zij mijn volk Mij te laten vergeten, net zoals hun voorouders Mij vergaten door de verering van de afgodsbeelden van Baäl. 28Laten deze valse profeten hun dromen vertellen en laten mijn echte boodschappers mijn woorden eerlijk overbrengen. Want er is verschil tussen kaf en koren! 29Brandt mijn woord niet als vuur?’ vraagt de Here. ‘Is het niet als een machtige hamer die een rots aan stukken slaat? 30-31 Daarom zal Ik ze leren, deze “profeten” die hun boodschappen van elkaar horen, deze gladde praters die zeggen: “Deze boodschap komt van God!” 32Hun verzonnen dromen zijn grote leugens die mijn volk naar de zonde leiden. Ik heb hen niet gezonden, maar zij verleiden het volk en hebben mijn volk niets waardevols te zeggen,’ zegt de Here.
33‘Als iemand van het volk of van hun “profeten” of priesters u vraagt: “Wel Jeremia, welk slecht nieuws hebt u vandaag van de Here?”, dan moet u antwoorden: “Wat voor slecht nieuws? U bent zelf het slechte nieuws, want de Here heeft u van Zich afgestoten!” 34En wat die valse profeten, priesters en mensen die spotten met “het slechte nieuws van God vandaag” betreft, Ik zal ze met hun families straffen voor deze woorden. 35U mag elkaar rustig vragen: “Wat is Gods boodschap? Wat heeft de Here gezegd?” 36Maar neem die uitdrukking “Gods slechte nieuws” niet in de mond. Want alleen u en uw leugens zijn slecht. U verdraait op die manier de woorden van de levende God, de Here van de hemelse legers. 37U mag Jeremia met respect de vraag stellen: “Wat is het antwoord van de Here? Wat heeft Hij tegen u gezegd?” 38-39 Maar als u hem vraagt naar “het slechte nieuws van God vandaag,” terwijl Ik u heb gewaarschuwd niet zo te spotten, dan zal Ik, de Here God, Mij ontdoen van de last die u voor Mij vormt. Ik zal u uit mijn nabijheid verjagen, u en deze stad die Ik u en uw voorouders gaf. 40Ik zal u en uw naam overladen met een eeuwige schande die niet meer wordt vergeten.’
1Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD. 2Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD. 3And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. 4And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the LORD.
5¶ Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. 6In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.23.6 THE LORD…: Heb. Jehovah-tsidkenu 7Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that they shall no more say, The LORD liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; 8But, The LORD liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.

Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD. 25I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. 26How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; 27Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal. 28The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD.23.28 that hath a dream: Heb. with whom is, etc 29Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? 30Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour. 31Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith.23.31 that…: or, that smooth their tongues 32Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.
33¶ And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the LORD? thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will even forsake you, saith the LORD. 34And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, The burden of the LORD, I will even punish that man and his house.23.34 punish: Heb. visit upon 35Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbour, and every one to his brother, What hath the LORD answered? and, What hath the LORD spoken? 36And the burden of the LORD shall ye mention no more: for every man’s word shall be his burden; for ye have perverted the words of the living God, of the LORD of hosts our God. 37Thus shalt thou say to the prophet, What hath the LORD answered thee? and, What hath the LORD spoken? 38But since ye say, The burden of the LORD; therefore thus saith the LORD; Because ye say this word, The burden of the LORD, and I have sent unto you, saying, Ye shall not say, The burden of the LORD; 39Therefore, behold, I, even I, will utterly forget you, and I will forsake you, and the city that I gave you and your fathers, and cast you out of my presence: 40And I will bring an everlasting reproach upon you, and a perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten.
