Israël keert zich af van God
1De Here sprak opnieuw tegen mij en zei: 2‘Zeg tegen de mensen van Jeruzalem: de Here zegt: Ik herinner Mij dat u lang geleden als een jonge bruid uw best deed Mij een genoegen te doen. U hield van Mij en volgde Mij zelfs dwars door onherbergzame woestijnen. 3In die tijd was Israël een heilig volk, het eerste van mijn kinderen. Iedereen die het iets aandeed, maakte zich ernstig schuldig en er kwam groot onheil over ieder die maar een vinger naar hem uitstak. 4-5 Och Israël,’ zegt de Here, ‘waarom keerden uw voorouders Mij de rug toe? Welk onrecht vonden zij in Mij dat zij zich van Mij afkeerden, afgodsbeelden aanbaden en veranderden in nietsnutten? 6Zij dachten er niet meer aan dat Ik, de Here, hen veilig uit Egypte had gehaald en hen door de barre wildernis had geleid, een land van rotsen en woestijnen, van droogte en dood, waar niemand woont of zelfs maar doorheen reist. 7Ik bracht hen in een vruchtbaar land om daarvan de vruchten en goede opbrengsten te eten, maar zij maakten er een zondig en verdorven land van en veranderden mijn erfenis in iets gruwelijks. 8Zelfs hun priesters gaven niets om de Here en ook hun rechters negeerden Mij. Hun leiders keerden zich tegen Mij en hun profeten vereerden Baäl en dienden nietswaardige afgoden. 9Maar u bent nog niet van Mij af, Ik zal u aanklagen en aandringen op uw terugkeer naar Mij, ja, zelfs later bij uw kleinkinderen!
10-11 Kijk om u heen of enig ander volk zijn oude goden inruilde voor nieuwe, zelfs al zijn dat geen echte goden. Stuur mensen naar Cyprus in het westen en naar Kedar in het oosten. Vraag daar maar of zoiets ooit eerder is gebeurd. En toch heeft mijn volk zijn machtige God opgegeven voor een stelletje stomme afgoden! 12De hemel is geschokt door zoʼn daad en huivert van afschuw. 13Want mijn volk heeft zich schuldig gemaakt aan twee zonden: het heeft Mij, de bron van levend water, verlaten en maakte voor zichzelf bakken vol barsten, die geen druppel water kunnen vasthouden!
14Waarom is Israël een slavenvolk geworden? Waarom is het gevangengenomen en naar een ver land weggevoerd? 15Ik zie grote legers onder machtig geschreeuw naar Israël marcheren om het te verwoesten en haar steden in brandende puinhopen te veranderen. 16Ik zie de legers van Egypte op mars gaan vanuit hun steden Memphis en Tachpanhes, om Israël van haar glorie en kracht te beroven. 17En u hebt dit aan uzelf te wijten door uw opstand tegen de Here, uw God, toen Hij u wilde leiden en u de weg wilde wijzen! 18Wat hebt u bereikt met uw verdragen met Egypte en Assyrië? 19Uw eigen slechtheid zal u straffen. U zult leren hoe slecht en bitter het is ontrouw te worden aan de Here, uw God, Hem zonder enige schroom te verlaten!’—zegt de Here, de God van de hemelse legers.
20‘Lang geleden schudde u mijn juk af en verbrak u de banden die u met Mij verbonden. U kwam openlijk in opstand en weigerde Mij te gehoorzamen. Op elke heuvel en onder elke boom hebt u diep gebogen voor uw afgoden, bent u Mij ontrouw geweest. 21Hoe kon dit zover komen? Want toen Ik u plantte, heb Ik het zaad zorgvuldig uitgezocht, u was de edelste wijnstok. Hoe komt het dat u nu een wilde, woekerende wijnstok bent geworden? 22Geen zeep of loog kunnen u nog reinigen, uw schuld kunt u niet wegwassen,’ zegt de Oppermachtige Here.
23‘U ontkent dat u afgoden hebt aanbeden! Hoe kunt u zoiets zeggen? Ga maar eens kijken in de dalen! Laat de vreselijke zonden die u hebt gedaan, maar eens goed op u inwerken. U lijkt op een rusteloze vrouwtjeskameel! 24U bent als een wilde ezelin die in de paartijd de wind diep insnuift. Wie zal haar paringsdrift tegenhouden? Degene die u wil hebben, hoeft niet te zoeken, want u komt vanzelf naar hem toe rennen! 25Kom toch terug van dat vermoeiende rennen achter andere goden aan. Maar u zegt: “Verspil uw adem maar niet. Ik houd van deze vreemde goden en ik kan het gewoon niet laten hen achterna te lopen.” 26-27 De enige schande waarvoor Israël nog bang is, is te worden betrapt als een dief. Koningen, ambtenaren, priesters en profeten, voor allen geldt hetzelfde. Zij noemen een bewerkt stuk hout hun vader en hun moeder is een bewerkt stuk steen. Ze hebben Mij de rug toegekeerd, maar als zij in moeilijkheden komen, roepen zij Mij opeens te hulp! 28Waarom roept u dan ook niet naar die goden die u hebt gemaakt? Als het gevaarlijk wordt, laten zij u dan redden als zij kunnen! Want, Juda, u hebt net zoveel goden als er steden bij u zijn. 29Kom niet bij Mij aan, u bent allemaal tegen Mij in opstand gekomen,’ zegt de Here. 30‘Ik heb uw volk gestraft, maar het hielp niets, het wil nog steeds niet gehoorzamen. En uzelf hebt mijn profeten gedood, zoals een leeuw zijn prooi verscheurt.
31O mijn volk, luister naar de woorden van God: ben Ik onrechtvaardig tegen Israël geweest? Ben Ik een onherbergzaam oord en een land van duisternis voor haar geweest? Waarom zegt mijn volk dan: “Eindelijk zijn we van God bevrijd, we willen nooit meer iets met Hem te maken hebben!” Waarom verbreekt u zo alle relaties met uw God? 32Vergeet een meisje soms haar sieraden? En zal een bruid haar bruidsjurk willen verstoppen? Maar mijn volk heeft Mij allang vergeten, het kostbaarste van al zijn schatten. 33Wat doet u toch een moeite uw geliefden voor u te winnen! Een prostituee zou nog heel wat van u kunnen leren! 34Uw kleren zijn besmeurd met het bloed van onschuldigen en armen. Schaamteloos hebt u hen vermoord, zonder enige reden. 35En toch zegt u: “Ik heb niets gedaan. Ik weet zeker dat God niet toornig is!” Maar Ik zal u streng straffen, omdat u zegt: “Ik heb niet gezondigd!” 36Steeds weer verlaat u Mij en zoekt steun bij een ander, uw nieuwe vrienden in Egypte zullen u in de steek laten, net zoals Assyrië heeft gedaan. 37U zult in vertwijfeling worden achtergelaten en uw handen voor uw gezicht slaan, want de Here heeft degenen op wie u vertrouwt, verworpen. U kunt van hen geen hulp ontvangen.’

5¶ Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain? 6Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt? 7And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.2.7 a plentiful…: or, the land of Carmel 8The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.
9¶ Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children’s children will I plead. 10For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.2.10 over: or, over to 11Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. 12Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD. 13For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
14¶ Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?2.14 spoiled: Heb. become a spoil? 15The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.2.15 yelled: Heb. gave out their voice 16Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.2.16 have…: or, feed on thy crown 17Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way? 18And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river? 19Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

29Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD. 30In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.
31¶ O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?2.31 We are…: Heb. We have dominion 32Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number. 33Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways. 34Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.2.34 secret…: Heb. digging 35Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned. 36Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. 37Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.
