David brengt de ark naar Jeruzalem
1-2 Daarna bracht David opnieuw een speciale troepenmacht van dertigduizend man op de been en trok naar Baäla in Juda om de ark van de Here van de hemelse legers, die bij de engelen woont, naar huis terug te brengen. 3-5De ark werd weggehaald uit het in de heuvels gelegen huis van Abinadab en daarna op een nieuwe wagen gezet. Twee zonen van Abinadab, Uzza en Ahio, begeleidden de wagen. Ahio liep voor de wagen, gevolgd door David en het volk. Zij zongen blij voor de Here en speelden op allerlei instrumenten: citers, harpen, tamboerijnen, rinkelbellen en cimbalen.
6Bij de dorsvloer van Nachon struikelden de ossen voor de wagen en Uzza stak zijn hand uit om te voorkomen dat de ark zou vallen. 7Maar de Here richtte zijn toorn tegen Uzza en doodde hem ter plekke. Levenloos lag hij naast de ark. 8David was vreselijk ontsteld omdat de Here dit had gedaan en noemde deze plaats ‘De plaats van toorn tegen Uzza’ en zo heet hij vandaag de dag nog. 9Met bevend ontzag voor de Here vroeg David zich toen af hoe hij de ark ooit moest terugbrengen. 10Hij besloot hem niet naar de Stad van David te brengen, maar bracht hem naar het huis van Obed-Edom, die afkomstig was uit Gath. 11Daar bleef de ark drie maanden staan en de Here zegende Obed-Edom en zijn hele gezin.
12Toen David dat hoorde, bracht hij de ark naar de Stad van David en maakte er een groot feest van. 13Nadat de mannen die de ark droegen, zes passen hadden gedaan, stopten zij om David de gelegenheid te geven een rund en een gemest lam te offeren. 14In priesterkleding gestoken, danste David uitbundig onder het oog van de Here voor de ark uit. 15Zo brachten David en het volk Israël de ark van de Here met veel gejubel en bazuingeschal terug naar de plaats waar hij hoorde.
16Sauls dochter Michal keek uit het raam toen de stoet de stad binnenkwam. Zij zag hoe koning David voor het oog van de Here danste en sprong en voelde diepe minachting voor hem. 17De ark werd in de tent gezet die David voor dat doel had laten opzetten. Vervolgens bracht hij brandoffers en vredeoffers aan de Here. 18Ook zegende hij het volk in de naam van de Here van de hemelse legers. 19Hij gaf iedereen een geschenk, zowel de mannen als de vrouwen, in de vorm van brood, vlees en druivenkoeken. Toen de hele plechtigheid achter de rug was en iedereen naar huis was gegaan, 20ging ook David naar huis om zijn gezin te zegenen. Maar Michal kwam hem tegemoet en zei met verachting in haar stem: ‘Wat heeft de koning van Israël zich vandaag weer prachtig gedragen! Als een losbandige ging hij halfnaakt over straat en liet zich bekijken door de meisjes langs de weg!’ 21Maar David was het niet met haar eens. ‘Ik danste voor de Here,’ zei hij, ‘die aan mij de voorkeur gaf boven jouw vader en zijn familie en mij aanstelde als leider van zijn volk Israël! Daarom ben ik ook niet bang mijn vreugde in de Here te laten zien. 22Ja, in de toekomst zal ik me nog meer moeten verlagen en vernederen, maar dan nog zullen de meisjes over wie je het had, net zo tegen mij opkijken!’ 23Om haar minachtende houding bleef Michal haar hele verdere leven kinderloos.

6¶ And when they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.6.6 Nachon: also called Chidon6.6 shook it: or, stumbled 7And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.6.7 error: or, rashness 8And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perez-uzzah to this day.6.8 made: Heb. broken6.8 Perez-uzzah: that is, the breach of Uzzah 9And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark of the LORD come to me? 10So David would not remove the ark of the LORD unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 11And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months: and the LORD blessed Obed-edom, and all his household.
12¶ And it was told king David, saying, The LORD hath blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with gladness. 13And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings. 14And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. 15So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. 16And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul’s daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.
17¶ And they brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.6.17 pitched: Heb. stretched 18And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts. 19And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.
20¶ Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!6.20 shamelessly: or, openly 21And David said unto Michal, It was before the LORD, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore will I play before the LORD. 22And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.6.22 of the…: or, of the handmaids of my servants 23Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.
