God roept Samuël
1De jonge Samuël diende de Here onder toezicht van Eli. De Here sprak in die tijd maar zelden door een profetie. 2Op een nacht lag Eli op bed. Hij was op hoge leeftijd en al bijna blind. 3Samuël lag te slapen in de buurt van de ark in het heiligdom. Terwijl de godslamp al bijna uit was, 4-5 riep de Here: ‘Samuël! Samuël!’ ‘Ja, wat is er?’ reageerde Samuël. Hij sprong uit bed en liep snel naar Eli. ‘Hier ben ik. Waarom riep u mij?’ vroeg hij Eli. ‘Ik heb je niet geroepen,’ zei Eli. ‘Ga maar weer terug naar bed.’ Samuël deed dat. 6Maar kort daarna riep de Here opnieuw zijn naam. Samuël kwam weer uit bed en liep naar Eli. ‘Hebt u iets nodig?’ vroeg hij. ‘Nee, mijn zoon. Ik heb je niet geroepen,’ zei Eli, ‘ga maar weer gauw slapen.’
7Samuël had de Here nog niet leren kennen, want hij had nog nooit eerder een boodschap van de Here gekregen. 8Toen riep de Here hem voor de derde keer en opnieuw sprong Samuël uit bed en liep snel naar Eli. ‘Ja, wat is er?’ vroeg hij, ‘u hebt toch geroepen.’ Toen begreep Eli dat het de Here was die tegen de jongen had gesproken. 9Daarom zei hij tegen Samuël: ‘Ga maar weer liggen en als je weer wordt geroepen, moet je zeggen: “Ja Here, ik luister.” ’ Samuël ging terug naar bed.
10Daarna kwam de Here bij Samuël en riep net als de vorige keren zijn naam. Samuël deed wat Eli hem had gezegd en zei: ‘Ja Here, ik luister.’ 11Toen zei de Here tegen Samuël: ‘Ik ben van plan in Israël dingen te doen, die niemand zal willen geloven. 12Ik ga alle vreselijke dingen uitvoeren die Ik Eli heb voorzegd. 13Ik heb hem en zijn familie gedreigd met een eeuwige straf, omdat zijn zonen zich godslasterlijk hebben gedragen, maar hij heeft hen niet onder handen genomen. 14Daarom heb Ik gezworen dat de zonden van Eli en zijn zonen nooit meer vergeven zullen worden door geschenken en offers.’
15Samuël bleef tot de volgende morgen in bed en opende toen de deuren van het heiligdom, zoals hij altijd deed. Hij zag er erg tegenop Eli te vertellen wat de Here had gezegd. 16-17 Maar Eli riep hem. ‘Jongen,’ zei hij, ‘wat heeft de Here tegen je gezegd? Vertel mij alles. God zal je straffen als je ook maar iets voor mij achterhoudt van wat Hij heeft gezegd!’ 18Samuël vertelde hem alles. ‘Het is de wil van de Here. Laat Hij doen wat naar zijn inzicht het beste is,’ was Eliʼs reactie.
19Toen Samuël ouder werd, gaf de Here hem wijsheid en bracht alles in vervulling wat hij had voorzegd. 20Daardoor raakte heel Israël, van Dan tot Berseba, ervan overtuigd dat Samuel door de Here als profeet was aangewezen. 21De Here verscheen steeds weer in Silo en sprak dan tegen Samuël.
1And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. 2And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; 3And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; 4That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. 5And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. 6And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. 7Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.3.7 Now…: or, Thus did Samuel before he knew the LORD, and before the word of the LORD was revealed unto him 8And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. 9Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.

15¶ And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision. 16Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I. 17And he said, What is the thing that the Lord hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.3.17 more also: Heb. so add3.17 thing: or, word 18And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. 19¶ And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. 20And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.3.20 established: or, faithful 21And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
