De taak van de priesters
1-2 Ook de priesters, de nakomelingen van Aäron, waren onderverdeeld in twee groepen, die de namen droegen van de zonen van Aäron: Eleazar en Itamar. Nadab en Abihu waren ook zonen van Aäron, maar zij stierven eerder dan hun vader en hadden geen kinderen, zo bleven alleen Eleazar en Itamar over voor de bediening van het priesterambt. 3Na overleg met Zadok en Ahimelech, de leiders van respectievelijk de Eleazar-groep en de Itamar-groep, verdeelde David Aärons nakomelingen over talloze kleine groepen, al naar gelang het soort werk dat zij verrichtten. 4Eleazars nakomelingen werden onderverdeeld in zestien en Itamars nakomelingen in acht groepen. Het bleek namelijk dat onder de nakomelingen van Eleazar meer groepshoofden waren dan onder de nakomelingen van Itamar. 5Door middel van het lot werden de priesters bij de groepen ingedeeld, zodat niemand werd bevoordeeld, want er bevonden zich heel wat beroemde mannen en hoogwaardigheidsbekleders van de tempel in elke groep. 6Semaja, een Leviet en de zoon van Netanel, fungeerde als secretaris en noteerde de namen in het bijzijn van de koning, de leiders van Israël, de priester Zadok, Abjathars zoon Ahimelech en de hoofden van de priesters en de Levieten. Beurtelings werd één familie getrokken voor de Eleazar-groep en één voor de Itamar-groep.
7-18De families werden door middel van het lot op de volgende manier verdeeld: als eerste viel het lot op Jojarib; als tweede op Jedaja; de derde was Harim; de vierde was Seorim; vijfde was Malkia; zesde Mijamin; zevende Hakkoz; achtste Abia; negende Jesua; tiende Sechanja; elfde Eljasib; twaalfde Jakim; dertiende Huppa; veertiende Jesebeab; vijftiende Bilga; zestiende Immer; zeventiende Hezir; achttiende Happizzes; negentiende Petahja; twintigste Jehezkel; eenentwintigste Jachin; tweeëntwintigste Gamul; drieëntwintigste Delaja; vierentwintigste Maäzja. 19Elke groep voerde zijn eigen taken in de tempel uit, zoals God die aan hun voorvader Aäron had opgedragen.
20Dit waren de andere nakomelingen van Levi: Amram, zijn nakomeling Subaël en diens telg Jehdeja, 21de groep van Rehabja, onder leiding van zijn oudste zoon Jissia, 22de groep van Jizha, bestaande uit Selomoth en zijn nakomeling Jahath. 23De groep van Hebron, bestaande uit Jeria, Hebrons oudste zoon, Amarja, zijn tweede zoon, Jahaziël, zijn derde zoon, en Jekameam, de vierde zoon. 24-25 De groep van Uzziël stond onder leiding van zijn zoon Micha. Van de groep van Micha had zijn zoon Samir de leiding. De leiding van de groep van Michaʼs broer Jissia was in handen van diens zoon Zecharja. 26-27 De groep van Merari stond onder leiding van zijn zonen Machli en Musi. De groep van Jaäzia, ook een zoon van Merari, bestond uit Beno, Soham, Zakkur en Hibri. 28Machliʼs nakomelingen waren Eleazar, die geen zonen had, 29en Kis, die onder meer Jerachmeël als zoon had. 30De zonen van Musi waren Machli, Eder en Jerimoth. Dit waren de nakomelingen van Levi, verdeeld over hun families. 31Evenals de nakomelingen van Aäron werden ook zij door middel van het lot ingedeeld, zonder dat daarbij werd gelet op leeftijd of rang. Dat gebeurde in het bijzijn van koning David, Zadok, Ahimelech en de leiders van de priesters en Levieten.
1Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron; Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 2But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest’s office. 3And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service. 4And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the house of their fathers. 5Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar. 6And Shemaiah the son of Nethaneel the scribe, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and before the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.24.6 principal…: Heb. house of the father 7Now the first lot came forth to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah, 8The third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim, 9The fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin, 10The seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah, 11The ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah, 12The eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim, 13The thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab, 14The fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer, 15The seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Aphses, 16The nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezekel, 17The one and twentieth to Jachin, the two and twentieth to Gamul, 18The three and twentieth to Delaiah, the four and twentieth to Maaziah. 19These were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the LORD, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him.

27¶ The sons of Merari by Jaaziah; Beno, and Shoham, and Zaccur, and Ibri. 28Of Mahli came Eleazar, who had no sons. 29Concerning Kish: the son of Kish was Jerahmeel. 30The sons also of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites after the house of their fathers. 31These likewise cast lots over against their brethren the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites, even the principal fathers over against their younger brethren.
