Die Ammoniter bedrohen Juda
1Einige Zeit später erklärten die Moabiter, die Ammoniter und einige Sippen der Mëuniter Joschafat den Krieg. 2Ein Bote kam und meldete dem König: »Ein riesiges Heer zieht von der Ostseite des Toten Meeres von Edom her gegen uns heran. Sie sind inzwischen schon in Hazezon-Tamar angelangt.« – Hazezon-Tamar war ein anderer Name für En-Gedi.
3Diese Nachricht jagte Joschafat Angst ein. Er wandte sich an den Herrn um Hilfe und rief ganz Juda zum Fasten auf. 4Aus allen Städten Judas kamen die Menschen nach Jerusalem, um zum Herrn um Hilfe zu beten. 5Sie versammelten sich im neuen Vorhof beim Tempel des Herrn. Joschafat trat nach vorne 6und betete:
»Herr, du Gott unserer Vorfahren! Du bist Gott im Himmel, du bist Herr über alle Könige der Erde. In deiner Hand sind Macht und Stärke. Niemand kann gegen dich bestehen! 7Hast du, unser Gott, nicht damals die Bewohner dieses Landes unseretwegen vertrieben? Hast nicht du es den Nachkommen deines Freundes Abraham für alle Zeiten geschenkt? 8Sie haben sich hier niedergelassen; sie haben dir einen Tempel gebaut und gesagt: 9›Wenn uns ein Unglück trifft, wenn Krieg, Pest, Hungersnot oder ein anderes Strafgericht über uns hereinbricht, dann wird Gott uns erhören, wenn wir zu diesem Tempel kommen und hier zu ihm um Hilfe schreien. Er wird uns retten, denn er wohnt in diesem Tempel.‹
10Und nun bedrohen uns die Ammoniter, die Moabiter und die Edomiter vom Gebirge Seïr! Als dein Volk damals aus Ägypten kam, hast du ihm nicht erlaubt, diese Völker anzugreifen. Israel musste ihnen ausweichen und durfte sie nicht ausrotten. 11Und zum Dank dafür wollen sie uns nun von unserem Grund und Boden vertreiben, den du uns geschenkt hast! 12Unser Gott, bestrafe sie! Wir selbst können nichts ausrichten gegen dieses riesige Heer, das gegen uns heranzieht. Wir sehen keinen Ausweg mehr, doch wir vertrauen auf dich!«
13Alle Männer, Frauen und Kinder von Juda hatten sich im Tempelvorhof vor dem Herrn versammelt. 14Plötzlich kam der Geist des Herrn über Jahasiël, einen Leviten aus der Sippe Asaf. Sein Vater hieß Secharja, die weiteren Vorfahren waren Benaja, Jehiël und Mattanja. 15Jahasiël rief: »Hört, ihr Leute von Juda, ihr Einwohner Jerusalems und du, König Joschafat! So spricht der Herr: ›Habt keine Angst! Fürchtet euch nicht vor diesem großen Heer! Ich werde gegen sie kämpfen, nicht ihr! 16Zieht ihnen morgen entgegen! Sie werden von Ziz her den Berg heraufkommen. Am Ende des Tales, wo die Wüste Jeruël beginnt, werdet ihr auf sie stoßen. 17Aber ihr braucht nicht zu kämpfen! Geht dorthin, und dann werdet ihr sehen, wie ich, der Herr, euch rette.‹ Habt keine Angst, ihr Bewohner von Juda und Jerusalem. Verliert nicht den Mut! Zieht ihnen morgen entgegen, der Herr wird euch beistehen!«
18Da warf sich Joschafat nieder und berührte mit dem Gesicht den Boden. Auch die Bewohner von Juda und Jerusalem warfen sich vor dem Herrn zu Boden und beteten ihn an. 19Die Leviten aus den Sippen Kehat und Korach standen auf und stimmten ein Loblied an. Sie priesen den Herrn, den Gott Israels, so laut sie konnten.
Der Sieg über die Ammoniter
20Früh am nächsten Morgen machte das Heer von Juda sich auf den Weg zur Wüste Tekoa. Beim Aufbruch trat Joschafat vor sie hin und rief: »Hört, ihr Männer von Juda und Jerusalem! Vertraut auf den Herrn, euren Gott, dann werdet ihr standhalten können! Glaubt, was seine Propheten euch gesagt haben, und ihr werdet als Sieger zurückkehren!« 21Joschafat beriet sich mit den Versammelten und stellte daraufhin an die Spitze des Heeres einige Sänger. In Festgewändern sollten sie vor den Soldaten herziehen und den Herrn loben mit dem Lied:
»Preist den Herrn,
denn seine Gnade hört niemals auf!«
22Als die Sänger ihre Loblieder anstimmten, ließ der Herr die Truppen der Ammoniter, Moabiter und der Bewohner des Gebirges Seïr in einen Hinterhalt geraten. Sie wurden in die Flucht geschlagen. 23Da verbündeten sich die Ammoniter und die Moabiter gegen die Edomiter, die auf dem Gebirge Seïr wohnten, und vernichteten sie. Dann gerieten sie selbst aneinander und brachten sich gegenseitig um. 24Als die Israeliten zu der Stelle kamen, von wo aus man die Wüste überblicken konnte, suchten sie das große Heer der Feinde. Da entdeckten sie die Leichen, die überall am Boden lagen. Keiner der Feinde war mit dem Leben davongekommen. 25Joschafat und sein Heer zogen zu dem Schlachtfeld, um sie auszuplündern. Sie fanden unzählige Tiere20,25 So nach der griechischen Übersetzung. Der hebräische Text lautet: Sie fanden bei ihnen., Kleider20,25 So nach einigen hebräischen Handschriften und alten Übersetzungen. Der hebräische Text lautet: Leichen. und wertvolle Gegenstände. Es war so viel, dass sie drei Tage brauchten, um die Beute wegzubringen.
26Am vierten Tag kamen sie in einem nahe gelegenen Tal zusammen, um dem Herrn zu danken. Seitdem heißt es Beracha-Tal (»Tal des Dankes«). 27Voller Freude darüber, dass der Herr ihre Feinde besiegt hatte, kehrten die Männer von Juda und Jerusalem mit Joschafat an ihrer Spitze nach Hause zurück. 28Begleitet von der Musik der Harfen, Lauten und Trompeten zogen sie in Jerusalem ein und gingen zum Tempel des Herrn. 29Die Könige der Länder ringsum bekamen große Angst vor der Macht Gottes, als sie hörten, wie der Herr selbst gegen Israels Feinde gekämpft hatte. 30Von da an konnte Joschafat in Ruhe regieren, denn Gott schenkte Juda Frieden mit den Königreichen ringsum.
Joschafats letzte Jahre und sein Tod

31Mit 35 Jahren war Joschafat König von Juda geworden. Er regierte 25 Jahre in Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Asuba und war eine Tochter von Schilhi. 32Er folgte dem Beispiel seines Vaters Asa und tat wie er, was dem Herrn gefiel, 33nur die Opferstätten blieben auch unter seiner Herrschaft bestehen. Denn das Volk war noch nicht dazu bereit, von ganzem Herzen dem Gott ihrer Vorfahren zu dienen.
34Alles Weitere über Joschafats Leben steht in der Chronik von Jehu, Hananis Sohn. Sie wurde später in die Chronik der Könige von Israel aufgenommen.
35König Joschafat von Juda schloss ein Bündnis mit König Ahasja von Israel, obwohl dieser nichts von Gott wissen wollte. 36Die beiden Könige beschlossen, gemeinsam in Ezjon-Geber eine Handelsflotte20,36 Wörtlich: Tarsis-Schiffe. – Vgl. die Anmerkung zu Kapitel 9,21. aufzubauen. 37Doch Eliëser aus Marescha, ein Sohn von Dodawa, ging zu Joschafat und prophezeite ihm: »Weil du dich mit Ahasja verbündet hast, wird der Herr deine Schiffe zerstören!« So erlitt die Flotte Schiffbruch und kam nie an ihr Ziel.
1It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. 2Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi. 3And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.20.3 himself: Heb. his face 4And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.

14¶ Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; 15And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.20.16 cliff: Heb. ascent20.16 brook: or, valley 17Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you. 18And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD. 19And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.
20¶ And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 21And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.20.21 that…: Heb. praisers
22¶ And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.20.22 And when…: Heb. 31¶ And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 32And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD. 33Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers. 34Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.20.34 book of Jehu: Heb. words, etc20.34 is mentioned: Heb. was made to ascend
35¶ And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly: 36And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Ezion-geber. 37Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.
