1Israel era una vid frondosa
que daba fruto a su antojo.
Pero cuanto más aumentaba su fruto,
más altares se construía;
cuanto más prosperaba su país,
más hermosas hacía sus piedras sagradas.
2Su corazón es escurridizo,
pero tendrá que cargar con su culpa.
El Señor destrozará sus altares
y devastará sus piedras sagradas.
3Tal vez dirán: «No hemos temido al Señor,
y por eso no tenemos rey.
Pero, aun si lo tuviéramos,
¿qué podría hacer por nosotros?»
4Hablan solo por hablar;
juran en falso y hacen tratos;
¡por eso florecen los pleitos
como la mala yerba en el campo!
5Temen los moradores de Samaria
por el becerro que adoran en Bet Avén.10:5 Véase nota en 4:15.
El pueblo del becerro hará duelo por él,
lo mismo que sus sacerdotes idólatras.
Harán lamentos por su esplendor,
porque se lo llevarán al destierro.
6El becerro será llevado a Asiria
como tributo para el gran rey.
Efraín quedará avergonzado;
Israel se avergonzará de sus ídolos.10:6 sus ídolos (lectura probable); sus planes (TM).
7Samaria y su rey desaparecerán
como rama arrastrada por el agua.
8Serán destruidos sus santuarios paganos,
lugares de pecado de Israel.
¡Cardos y espinos crecerán sobre sus altares!
Entonces dirán a las montañas: «¡Cubridnos!»,
y a las colinas: «¡Caed sobre nosotros!»
9«Tú, Israel, has venido pecando
desde los días de Guibeá,
y allí te has mantenido.
¡En Guibeá, la guerra
tomará por sorpresa a los malvados!
10Cuando yo quiera, los castigaré;
entonces las naciones se juntarán contra ellos
para aprisionarlos por su doble perversión.
11Efraín es una novilla adiestrada
a la que le gusta trillar,
pero yo no quise ponerle el yugo.
Pero ahora voy a uncir a Efraín,
y Judá tendrá que arar,
y Jacob emparejará la tierra».
12¡Sembrad para vosotros justicia!
¡Cosechad el fruto del amor,
y poneos a labrar el barbecho!
¡Ya es tiempo de buscar al Señor!,
hasta que él venga y os envíe lluvias de justicia.
13Pero vosotros sembrasteis maldad, cosechasteis crímenes
y comisteis el fruto de la mentira,
porque confiasteis en vuestros carros
y en la multitud de vuestros guerreros.
14Un estruendo de guerra se levantará contra tu pueblo,
y todas tus fortalezas serán devastadas,
como devastó Salmán a Bet Arbel en el día de la batalla,
cuando las madres fueron destrozadas
junto con sus hijos.
15Esto es lo que Betel os hizo a vosotros,
a causa de vuestra extrema maldad.
¡Pues el rey de Israel será destruido por completo
en cuanto amanezca!
1Israel was a spreading vine;
he brought forth fruit for himself.
As his fruit increased,
he built more altars;
as his land prospered,
he adorned his sacred stones.
2Their heart is deceitful,
and now they must bear their guilt.
The Lord will demolish their altars
and destroy their sacred stones.
3Then they will say, “We have no king
because we did not revere the Lord.
But even if we had a king,
what could he do for us?”
4They make many promises,
take false oaths
and make agreements;
therefore lawsuits spring up
like poisonous weeds in a plowed field.
5The people who live in Samaria fear
for the calf-idol of Beth Aven.10:5 Beth Aven means house of wickedness (a derogatory name for Bethel, which means house of God).
Its people will mourn over it,
and so will its idolatrous priests,
those who had rejoiced over its splendor,
because it is taken from them into exile.
6It will be carried to Assyria
as tribute for the great king.
Ephraim will be disgraced;
Israel will be ashamed of its foreign alliances.
7Samaria’s king will be destroyed,
swept away like a twig on the surface of the waters.
8The high places of wickedness10:8 Hebrew aven, a reference to Beth Aven (a derogatory name for Bethel); see verse 5. will be destroyed—
it is the sin of Israel.
Thorns and thistles will grow up
and cover their altars.
Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”
and to the hills, “Fall on us!”
9“Since the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, Israel,
and there you have remained.10:9 Or there a stand was taken
Will not war again overtake
the evildoers in Gibeah?
10When I please, I will punish them;
nations will be gathered against them
to put them in bonds for their double sin.
11Ephraim is a trained heifer
that loves to thresh;
so I will put a yoke
on her fair neck.
I will drive Ephraim,
Judah must plow,
and Jacob must break up the ground.
12Sow righteousness for yourselves,
reap the fruit of unfailing love,
and break up your unplowed ground;
for it is time to seek the Lord,
until he comes
and showers his righteousness on you.
13But you have planted wickedness,
you have reaped evil,
you have eaten the fruit of deception.
Because you have depended on your own strength
and on your many warriors,
14the roar of battle will rise against your people,
so that all your fortresses will be devastated—
as Shalman devastated Beth Arbel on the day of battle,
when mothers were dashed to the ground with their children.
15So will it happen to you, Bethel,
because your wickedness is great.
When that day dawns,
the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.
