Jesús cambia el agua en vino
1Al tercer día se celebró una boda en Caná de Galilea, y la madre de Jesús se encontraba allí. 2También habían sido invitados a la boda Jesús y sus discípulos. 3Cuando el vino se acabó, la madre de Jesús le dijo:
―Ya no tienen vino.
4―Mujer, ¿eso qué tiene que ver conmigo? —respondió Jesús—. Todavía no ha llegado mi hora.
5Su madre dijo a los sirvientes:
―Haced lo que él os ordene.
6Había allí seis tinajas de piedra, de las que usan los judíos en sus ceremonias de purificación. En cada una cabían unos cien litros.2:6 unos cien litros. Lit. entre dos y tres metretas.
7Jesús dijo a los sirvientes:
―Llenad las tinajas de agua.
Y los sirvientes las llenaron hasta el borde.
8―Ahora sacad un poco y llevadlo al encargado del banquete —les dijo Jesús.
Así lo hicieron. 9El encargado del banquete probó el agua convertida en vino sin saber de dónde había salido, aunque sí lo sabían los sirvientes que habían sacado el agua. Entonces llamó aparte al novio 10y le dijo:
―Todos sirven primero el mejor vino y, cuando los invitados ya han bebido mucho, entonces sirven el más barato; pero tú has guardado el mejor vino hasta ahora.
11Esta, la primera de sus señales, la hizo Jesús en Caná de Galilea. Así reveló su gloria, y sus discípulos creyeron en él.
12Después de esto, Jesús bajó a Capernaún con su madre, sus hermanos y sus discípulos, y se quedaron allí unos días.
Jesús purifica el templo

13Cuando se aproximaba la Pascua de los judíos, subió Jesús a Jerusalén. 14Y en el templo2:14 Es decir, en el área general del templo; en vv. 19-21 el término griego significa santuario. halló a los que vendían bueyes, ovejas y palomas, e instalados en sus mesas a los que cambiaban dinero. 15Entonces, haciendo un látigo de cuerdas, echó a todos del templo, juntamente con sus ovejas y sus bueyes; regó por el suelo las monedas de los que cambiaban dinero y derribó sus mesas. 16A los que vendían las palomas les dijo:
―¡Sacad esto de aquí! ¿Cómo os atrevéis a convertir la casa de mi Padre en un mercado?
17Sus discípulos se acordaron de que está escrito: «El celo por tu casa me consumirá».2:17 Sal 69:9 18Entonces los judíos reaccionaron, preguntándole:
―¿Qué señal puedes mostrarnos para actuar de esta manera?
19―Destruid este templo —respondió Jesús—, y lo levantaré de nuevo en tres días.
20―Tardaron cuarenta y seis años en construir este templo, ¿y tú vas a levantarlo en tres días?
21Pero el templo al que se refería era su propio cuerpo. 22Así pues, cuando se levantó de entre los muertos, sus discípulos se acordaron de lo que había dicho, y creyeron en la Escritura y en las palabras de Jesús.
23Mientras estaba en Jerusalén, durante la fiesta de la Pascua, muchos creyeron en su nombre al ver las señales que hacía. 24En cambio, Jesús no les creía, porque los conocía a todos; 25no necesitaba que nadie le informara nada2:25 le informara nada. Lit. le diera testimonio. acerca de los demás, pues él conocía el interior del ser humano.
Jesus Changes Water Into Wine
1On the third day there was a wedding. It took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there. 2Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4“Dear woman, why are you telling me about this?” Jesus replied. “The time for me to show who I really am isn’t here yet.”
5His mother said to the servants, “Do what he tells you.”
6Six stone water jars stood nearby. The Jews used water from that kind of jar for special washings. They did that to make themselves pure and “clean.” Each jar could hold 20 to 30 gallons.
7Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the top.
8Then he told them, “Now dip some out. Take it to the person in charge of the dinner.”
They did what he said. 9The person in charge tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He didn’t realize where it had come from. But the servants who had brought the water knew. Then the person in charge called the groom to one side. 10He said to him, “Everyone brings out the best wine first. They bring out the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink. But you have saved the best until now.”
11What Jesus did here in Cana in Galilee was the first of his signs. Jesus showed his glory by doing this sign. And his disciples believed in him.
12After this, Jesus went down to Capernaum. His mother and brothers and disciples went with him. They all stayed there for a few days.
Jesus Clears Out the Temple Courtyard
13It was almost time for the Jewish Passover Feast. So Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple courtyard he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves. Others were sitting at tables exchanging money. 15So Jesus made a whip out of ropes. He chased all the sheep and cattle from the temple courtyard. He scattered the coins of the people exchanging money. And he turned over their tables. 16He told those who were selling doves, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” 17His disciples remembered what had been written. It says, “My great love for your house will destroy me.” (Psalm 69:9)
18Then the Jewish leaders asked him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do this?”
19Jesus answered them, “When you destroy this temple, I will raise it up again in three days.”
20They replied, “It has taken 46 years to build this temple. Are you going to raise it up in three days?” 21But the temple Jesus had spoken about was his body. 22His disciples later remembered what he had said. That was after he had been raised from the dead. Then they believed the Scripture. They also believed the words that Jesus had spoken.
23Meanwhile, he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast. Many people saw the signs he was doing. And they believed in his name. 24But Jesus did not fully trust them. He knew what people are like. 25He didn’t need anyone to tell him what people are like. He already knew why people do what they do.
